Now, every now and then, people love a good fright, so what are the scariest games you folks have come across?

I'm gonna start the ball rolling with Amnesia: The Dark Descent, I just got it and the intro message from Frictional message creeped me out so much I'm having to pluck up courage just to actually start the game...

Nobody actually has to post anymore. You already named Amnesia. That is a scary game to beat all scary games, just about.

Resident Evil 2 on the N64. Or the RE1 remake for Gamecube. They tie for the scariest game I own.

Project Zero II (AKA Fatal frame II) is the scariest game I own. The Japanese truly are the masters of horror.

Deadspace 1 or 2 on a difficulty higher than normal . Ever monster you encounter you'll be wondering if you have enough bullets or if you'll survive . Trust me , you will dread ever monster you encounter in that game on hard difficulties .

Penumbra
Demon's Souls (I shat bricks when the Flamelurker almost killed me, while I was carrying over 50000 souls...)
Max Payne (The nightmare sequences mess with your head... ¬w¬)

And that's all I can think of for now.

Also:

Captcha, are you fucking kidding me? Kanji? First Cyrillic, now this... =_=

Scariest game I played was probably Condemned 1, I did an all-nighter with a friend, and we were both terrified, especially Mr. Tibbits.

Did the same thing with Condemned 2, which started off good, but we kind of knew what to expect until the magical powers shit came into play...

I don't think we'll ever see #3, which is kind of a shame but really how do you backtrack after that?

i don't know iv'e never seen a "scary game" that actually scared me (apart from amnesia), sure dead space could make you jump but it wasn't actually scary.

Condemned: Criminal Origins.

Protip: You don't call /thread on your own post.

OT: Penumbra and Amnesia have already been called, so scariest games ever have been taken. in this case, I'll use my fall backs as Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

Since everyone already knows about Amnesia, I'll just make my usual contribution to this thread, which is the Thief 3 level Shalebridge Cradle, which is pants-shittingly terrifying and one of the most extraordinary examples of brilliance in level design I've ever seen.

Penumbra was good from a horror point of view, it almost managed to make me want to turn off the game a few times.
Amnesia was better, in fact it stands as the scariest game that I've ever played.

The early part of Call of Cthulhu: Dark corners of the earth (sewers in particular) were also well crafted and quite scary.

System shock 2 had its moments as well.

The void was creepy but not scary.

There is also a very famous thief 3 level...

Jump scares just don't work on me. I might jump, but I'm not scared, just surprised. This effectively eliminates almost all "horror" games (like Resident Evil, Dead Space and so on). Also, games where you are very powerful also removes almost all of the horror feel (Silent Hill was just not scary because of how easy the monsters were, the second half of Call of cthulhu: Dark corners of the earth suffered from the same issues).

I haven't really played a horror game that scared the crap out of me except Amnesia: The Dark Descent, the Penumbra games and Fatal Frame but they have already been said. But I did find Condemned: Criminal Origins to be quite tense.

Fear 2, Im sorry that joke wasn't even funny.

OT: Condemned one was probably the scariest game I Completed but the scariest game I ever played is Amnesia the dark descent, can't force myself to play it and the only time I have to play games now is at night so its not gonna get completed anytime soon.

Silent Hill 3 needs moar love.

Everyone talks about how Silent Hill was a new type of horror in games, Silent Hill 2 had such amazing atmosphere and characterization, how Silent Hill 4 had the most messed up story, and various not-nice things about the later games, but somehow, Silent Hill 3 manages to slip past the radar, despite being the best/scariest one.

Clearly, this is my opinion, but I don't see how people could say that the Chapel level wasn't the most screwed up OMGWTFBBQ level. Only Amnesia's "Choir" level came anywhere NEAR to having such an incredibly oppressive aura as the undercroft of Silent Hill's chapel.

Seriously, there's "missionaries" (really hard monsters) and "pendulums" (totally messed up monsters) everywhere, the transitions are hanging in the middle of NOTHINGNESS, the entire section is made of blood-encrusted rusty grates, there's twitching tissue everywhere, something never stops humming at you, children are crying in the most terrifying way possible, bloody footprints appear from nowhere, the doors are hidden by matted flesh... BLERGH And it's one thing for blood to be streaming down the walls, it's quite another to have blood running UP the walls.

<youtube=pUFMSCabves>

Heck, even the tamest scare in there was a child's classroom with an OMGWTFBBQ RUN monster in it that suddenly goes from normal to infected in less than three seconds. Yet no one seems to remember the game.

Finally figured out why Amnesia: The Dark Descent wouldn't run on my PC yesterday and fixed it and spent most of my labour day off playing it. Definitely the scariest thing I've played in years. Good call on Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, definitely worth picking up on Steam, even if there are a few bugs that hinder gameplay. The "Attack of the Fishmen" level does such a good job at turning "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" into an interactive experience, that I can't help but respect the game. I'll also give a shout out to the Beach Hotel level in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, definitely got me jumpy a few times, the sewer level also had a nice survival horror element to it, but that was more due to the limited resources and things to feed on for health.

As for console games, the first Condemned game turned one of my hardest friends into a quivering girl by the department store level. Silent Hill 2 had great atmosphere, but I found it more fun to play on my PC with headphones. Also there was an early Gamecube game called Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem that got me when it first came out, and implemented its sanity meter quite well, but the story was a bit hard to follow at times. The Fatal Frame series was also suppose to be quite good but I was pretty poor when they came out so I never got a chance to play them, perhaps some day I will, but until then I cannot give an honest opinion on it one way or another.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Condemned 1
Penumbra
Eternal Darkness
Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3
Fatal Frame series
Perhaps Fear 1

Those are the ones I can think of right now.
