Scary things in gaming - that shouldn't be.

For clarification, I'm not referring to horror games where things are SUPPOSED to be scary, I'm talking about times when you're playing a game, and something happens or comes along that makes you jump from your seat in terror... unintentionally.

Take, for example, the fact that I'm always - ALWAYS - petrified of anything in a game that is or even closely resembles a spider (I'm severely arachnophobic). I couldn't play through Ocarina of Time without half-looking away from the screen whenever I knew a Skulltula would be coming along, same with Twilight Princess.

Phobia or no, have there ever been any gaming moments like that for you?

EDIT: Thanks for answering my off-topic question, guys. I just remembered that game from an X-Play review and couldn't think of the name to save my life.

The dentist from Bioshock. I still can't remember where he pops up, so every time I see him, I get freaked out.

Portal made me jump atleast once. I was really having a hard time with GLaDOS, his voice just sinks into your head.

There I was, midnight, with my PS3 and Oblivion. The music turned sinister while I was traipsing through the wilderness. Slightly worried, I turn around and WHAM! a wolf with big, snarling teeth jumps out of absolutely nowhere!
And then I killed it with a flare, but hey, I still jumped.

not for nuthing but the wraiths in oblivion can be pretty damn creepy sometimes. I dont have a phobia or anything but the large insects in fallout3 were nasty to. Moreso on PC with a big monitor and good gfx cards. jsut too much detail. it would freeze in on vats sometimes and i was like ugggh .

Game you're thinking of is P.N. II or something like that. I just remember the first part stood for Product Number.

Skull Kid in Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask freaked me out. Partly because of the mask he wore, and because of the way he kept cocking his head so much.

Michael Jackson in Moonwalker. He goes around shooting sparkles at people and rescuing little girls stuck in closets.

I don't think I need to say anything more.

I'm fairly sure Manhunt was supposed to be messy as opposed to frightening, but I finished the tutorial level and have never gone bcak to that game. I guess trying to play it alone in the twilight hours was a bad idea...

I found the bloodcurdling screams of the innocent people (especially the crowds and people in buildings) rolled into a ball during the Katamari games scary yet oddly therapeutic.

The constant dread that the game would crash on me in Fable 2 is the only thing that approaches the fear that the X-Box 360 itself might fail on me.
As for in-game unexpected startlers, Phanto from Super Mario Brothers 2. His sheer determination to kill the player characters unless they dropped the key was a bit disturbing in such a bright and clorful game at the time.

The Hunters from HL2: Ep2 always creep me out, despite the fact I know when and where they will show up now, I still can't get over the first time I ran into them.

Yeah, it's kind of disturbingly satisfying.

Chain Chomp in Super Mario 64 always freaked me out a little.

I guess nearly everything in the original Alone in the dark game...

Yeah they were meant to be scary back then, but even when you see them now, the triangle-handed polygon wonder zombies are actually terrifying.

Happened to me but i got freaked out when you fall in the toxic liquid. I think i have a fear of open water as if a shark will pop out or something...
