So, at my old high school, serious trouble arises yet again with the faculty, with the principal being suspended on suspicion of having sex with people in the school during school hours.

http://nypost.com/2014/05/04/queens-principal-probed-over-sex-in-school-during-class-hours/

This isn't even the first time something like his has happened to the school, as the previous principal nearly caused a whole lot of students to be left back due to the fact he never gave them gym class (you need gym to pass, even though the gym and the teacher are utter crap), and a teacher was fired after it came to light he was having threesomes with students.

There was also another teacher that left under mysterious circumstances that never came to light (all we knew was that it was something school related, as the principal made an announcement about how we weren't allowed to ask questions about the matter), but as far as I'm aware that never made it to the news, so I guess it doesn't count.

So, has any sort of controversy ever rock a school you've been to? Things that happened while you were there are preferable. (the principal having sex at the school is what made me curious about the rest of you, so don't go saying how I'm not following my own guidelines)

It wasn't the schools fault but it's better than nothing I guess

http://www.wral.com/news/news_briefs/story/11531616/

Essentially, our assistant principal's head was shoved into a plate-glass window during a lunchtime fight.

Note, that there were about 9 mini-fights in the span of 55 minutes and that it was on 9/11 (not actual 9/11 but 11/9/2013)

I do recall in 8th grade that one of the Computer teachers had CP on his computer but I can't verify 100%. That was just what went around my peers *shrug*

Just remembered that in 7th grade, our principal did essentially this...

"After an altercation between a Hispanic and an African-American student, Principal Teresa Abron held an assembly on gang violence in the school's auditorium. Abron made all seventh grade black and Hispanic students attend the assemblies separately. No Asian or white students were required to attend."

When I was first entered high school, way back in 1998, there was a controversy because some racist/anti-Semitic asshole parent. One of his sons got good grades, the other one didn't. Why? Obviously it was the fault of the "white/Jewish" teachers.
Dear Mrs. Travis:
*****
The white/Jewish teachers at [Carver] are generally guilty of the following
offenses:
(1)
Failing to motivate our African-American children to be the best they can
be. Too many white/Jewish teachers have low expectations of our
children. Racial Discrimination! Racism!
(2)
Failing miserably to provide the kind of high quality, interesting and
stimulating learning experiences which would assist students in being
successful. Racism!
(3)
Failing miserably to and honor the cultural and ethnic value of African-
American History Month by assigning the majority African-American
student body the task of reporting on the movie Shindler?s List, instead of
an African-American assignment. That was blatant disrespect and
insensitivity! Racism!
(4)
Failing miserably to recognize the majority African-American student
body by allowing a teacher to tell African-American students that
affirmative action should be eliminated! This is another blatant example
of white/Jewish teachers misleading our children. Racism!
(5)
Failing miserable to regularly and effectively inform the students of the
many false representations of this racist country, and the many, many
violations of its own [C]onstitution. Acute racial discrimination, rampant
violations of its citizens? human rights are also issues neglected in the
curricula and the classroom. Why aren?t African-American students
taught to protest, boycott, and demonstrate against these American
atrocities?
* * * * *
We want these uncaring racist white/Jewish people to take their flawed and
ineffective show back to the suburbs where they live! They are systematically
destroying our children?s spirit and killing their will. This racist system must be
stopped by whatever means necessary and possible before additional generations
of our children are lost.
* * * * *
Since these white/Jewish people have been our traditional enemy, why are they so
eager to accept the ?teaching positions? at schools where African-Americans are
predominantly enrolled? They are not there because they love or care about our
children! They are there because oppressors need to oppress! We must stop the
oppressors and the oppression!
* * * * *
We ? African-Americans ? must control the educational institutions that are ours!
If we fail to effectively control OUR INSTITUTIONS OF LEARNING we are
surely doomed to continue our lives depending on white/Jewish people and
following their directions. We must be the master of our fate and absolutely must
be the captain of our soul!
I am amenable to meeting with you, at your earliest convenience, to discuss the
contents [of] this letter,
MARVIN A. SMITH (signed)
Then, somehow got "elected" as president of the Home and School Association and was "appointed" to serve on an Advisory Panel.

However, after he tried to get the vice-principal and other teachers fired, they tossed his ass out of those positions.
Dear Mrs. Travis:
We, the parents, Guardians and Friends of students enrolled at [Carver] hereby
demand the termination, resignation or transfer of Steven Miller from his position
as the assistant principal at Carver. He is a major divisive and negative force at
Carver.
*****
We, the Parents, Guardians and Friends of students of Carver have regularly
observed Steven Miller?s acute inhospitality. He walks through Carver ? where
Our Precious Children are enrolled ? and acts like Parents, Guardians and Friends
of Carver are invisible. He simply ignores us! That is completely and absolutely
unacceptable! Steven Miller is extremely uncomfortable around Parents,
Guardians and Friends of Carver. He is hostile, mean spirited, and downright
disrespectful of Parents, Guardians and Friends of students enrolled at Carver.
*****
We, the Parents, Guardians and Friends of students enrolled at Carver also very
strongly demand the termination, resignation or transfer of . . . Avi Barr. . . .
We, the Parents, Guardians and Friends of students enrolled at Carver demand
that Steven Miller, the Carver [A]ssistant [P]rincipal, be terminated, transferred or
asked to resign . . .
So, the asshole tried to sue the School District for $10 million dollars and got laughed out of court.
https://www.paed.uscourts.gov/documents/opinions/00D0692P.pdf

As a student, we did get a few unscheduled half-days from the event.

Wasn't this a Simpsons episode?

When our music teacher quit, there were rumors that he hit a student on the head with a guitar. Pretty sure he didn't.

Back a few years ago this happened in my high school: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/dc-high-school-student-claims-she-was-raped-during-school-hours/

What didn't get reported for some fucked up reason was that the charges were dropped because the girl finally admitted that she willingly gave oral sex to the boys, but decided to claim she was attacked when others found out about it. I believe after reviewing some camera footage they even saw her on film waiving the guys over to the area where the supposed "crime" took place. I guess one way of avoiding rumors about you being promiscuous is to try and send the people you had relations with to jail?

Hell, the guys they grabbed I knew for years. They were rough dudes, but I would never suspect them of being rapists. I mean, if you wanted to know who jumped some guy after school, yeah, you may want to look into them, but when it came to this it didn't fit.

In Sophomore year of High School for me (16-17 years old), a security officer patrolling the parking lot found a bomb threat note on a car there. This led to the school issuing a lockdown (In the middle of SATs too) and the bomb squad was called. After the B.S. found no bomb at all, they left and the school staff had to find out whose car it was, which later came out that the car owner's friend placed the note as a joke. You'd think this kid would be expelled from the school district but the thing you, nothing happened. No legal action, no disciplinary action, no anything. The kid that placed the bomb threat had one of the highest grades in the entire school. 4.0+ basically was his grade average.

So for an entire two years, disciplinary action against kids who got into fights, beat others up, cheated, and such was all messed up. Because the parents always had the leeway to go "You didn't do anything for this kid that did a bomb threat. If you discipline my kid, the courts will see this." Basically to keep a really, really high grade kid in school, the faculty inadvertently made it so no one was able to be disciplined for bad behavior. Don't bother looking it up, pretty swept under the rug sadly. :/

My old music teacher is currently in prison for doing things with a 17-year old student...the worst part is that he was married to one of his former students so that should have set off warning bells for everyone.

We also nearly had a bit of 'gang' violence between goths and chavs back in 2007 for stupid reasons. And setting fire to bins was a regular occurrence, but otherwise I can't think of anything that controversial...

My school was pretty boring, but there were a couple of scandals. First there was the PE teacher who got caught and sacked for getting a blow job from a female student.

Then there was the girl who had a baby, that was pretty shocking at the time. I'm not entirely sure how I didn't notice that she was pregnant, mind you I didn't pay that much attention to her because she was a ***** (no I'm not still bitter about my time in high school).

Maths teacher left his wife for a student 1/3 his age. Ended up on Today Tonight, which is news the way the Daily Mail is a newspaper.

So...I know someone from TV! Kinda...

We had a Study Hall "teacher", she had no degree of any kind, get fired for buying beer for students. She always was the "cool" teacher. She texted kids in study hall and bought them beer and smokes. Just so she could feel younger.

I have some more, but since the teacher is still there and working. I really don't want to say.

It's more of a problem that they were doing it at school, I'm not entirely sure of the details of the case but I'm pretty sure it counted as rape, even though it might be viewed as consensual. I also believe that it's illegal (or at least unethical) for someone in a position of responsibility & power to have a relationship with a student unless they're over 18.

Nothing really very interesting, but Mr. Ubanks, the security cop/guard person for our school was fired for physically stopping a fight. Pulled the kid away and then had to pin him down when he attacked back.

It was idiotic. Even the parents of the kid that was causing trouble weren't concerned, but the school has a no touching policy, so even though he was being attacked physically stopping the kid (by pinning mind you) was deemed unacceptable.

Kind of bullshit.

They were able to keep him on in another position (no idea what) since he was still the assistant wrestling coach, but still.

Generally, it doesn't matter if they're over 18, a teacher simply shouldn't be abusing their position of power in that way. A similar manner to doctor or psychologists dating their patients; it can lead to an unhealthily balanced relationship.

-----------------------------------------------

At my middle school, my old science teacher got fired for being a peadophile. My old PE teacher was fired for being a peadophile. My old English teacher was having an affair was the music teacher during school hours and everyone knew (I believe they got married many years later).

In my high school, they hired an ex-boxer to teach maths, who lost it one day and beat a child into the hospital (to be fair, children in British high school are mouthy little shits), and we had an Asian teacher who hit a student for singing "Ching Chong Chinaman".

You see, in the rural parts of Britain, it's still full of the good ol' days of abusers, racism and peadophiles.

God, study hall teacher's and detention hall teachers always seem to be the worst (over generalising incoming).

I asked a teacher if I could stay after to work on a project I needed to, and so she said I could work with in the detention hall room (I couldn't be alone). The teacher there treated me like crap. I'd be working and when I asked for something or talk to someone She'd tell me we were all here for a reason, blah blah and when I tried to leave she wouldn't let me because it would give the other students the wrong idea.

I sat there for an hour or two in detention for nothing because some ***** was on a power trip. She knew why I was there the whole time.

Another teacher who ran a study hall program was the opposite. He was supposed to be there to watch us AND help us with math and wruting and stuff, but couldn't do any of the stuff. He didn't do anything! It didn't help he was also sexist/passive aggressive as hell :/

While it didn't escalate to rape charges, just last year there was a girl who was caught doing something similar on the friggin' staircase DURING SCHOOL HOURS. I mostly kept to my small group of acquaintances though so I didn't know anyone directly involved.

Other than that... just the occasional fight or drug bust really. You know, regular american big-city public high-school stuff.

OH! There was a bomb-threat at my school once. Conveniently enough though there was a gigantic high-school nearby so we just spent the day there. No bomb of course, but it was an interesting day nonetheless. I should probably mention that this was after I transferred high-schools so we were less than 200 students taking up the extra rooms (and auditorium) of a 4000+ student high school; it was pretty roomy actually.

The most controversial thing to happen to my school recently was the implementation of school uniforms. Not even nice, spiffy ones either. Just boring collared shirts that are primary colors, khaki pants, and you can't have hair dye that's not a single, natural color.

School uniforms just can't be justifiable in my eyes. They serve no purpose, and there's little to no proof that they increase productivity. At a job I can understand, you need to know who to go to. At school, we aren't the ones providing the service. Luckily I graduated just before this all happened however.

There was a time back in middle school where a health teacher was in trouble for "peering down girls shirts" and sexually harassing them. I never heard what came of it. It could have all just been a lie for all I know. A case of crying wolf.

The detention teacher reminds me of another one. Our detention monitors were regular teachers and they switched on a regular basis. I got one detention in my four years in high school. The detention itself was pretty pointless, but that's not what I'm complaining about here. The teacher on duty activally tried to get my friend and I angry. When she did roll call, she asked each of us, in a very condescending manner, "So, I guess you like talking in class huh?" And she actually wanted an answer. I had her later as a teacher and totally fucking hated her. She picked favorites to the extreme and was just a *****.

Our study halls were total silence. No working together and no talking. Since there was no purpose in studying, I just used the period as a reading class. I think I knocked out like ten books that semester.

Well this happened after I left school due to illness but...
[link]http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensland/boy-charged-over-school-stabbing-20120509-1ybv4.html[/link]
I think he Courier Mail might have a more updated version but it's down at the moment.

Basically a 14 year old girl got stabbed in the toilets by a 16 year old boy. Stab wounds were in the head, neck, back and forearms. I vaguely remember him supposedly having a crush on her or something. Not sure if she died or not.

All you lucky Americans and Brits with your sex.

I went to high school here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arapahoe_High_School_(Centennial,_Colorado)#Shooting

Although I graduated several years ago, and fortunately I didn't know anyone affected by the shooting.

There was a somewhat controversial event that happened when I attended. The principal (who no longer works there) was obsessed with building a relationship with the Arapaho tribal nation. At one point a girl from the tribe attended the school and was paraded out at school events and stuff. Less than a year after she started there, she was expelled for drug use on school grounds (at least, that's what the rumors were, I don't think there was ever an official statement).
