This is some pretty fucked up shit: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/08/texas-school-district-rep_n_1949415.html

Weeks after Northside Independent School District in San Antonio rolled out its new "smart" IDs that tracks students' geographic locations, the community is still at odds with the program.

The "Student Locator Project," which is slated to eventually reach 112 Texas schools and close to 100,000 students, is in trial stages in two Northside district schools. In an effort to reduce truancy, the district has issued new student IDs with an embedded radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip that tracks the location of a student at all times.

The program officially launched October 1 at John Jay High School and Anson Jones Middle School. Without the badges -- required to be worn around the neck -- students cannot access common areas like the cafeteria or library, and cannot purchase tickets to extracurricular activities. WND reports that the district has threatened to suspend, fine or involuntarily transfer students who fail to comply and officials have noted that "there will be consequences for refusal to wear an ID card as we begin to move forward with full implementation."

Parents and students from the schools spoke out against the project last month. But now, WND is reporting that schools are taking the restrictions one step further.

John Jay High School sophomore Andrea Hernandez refuses to use the new IDs, citing religious beliefs and instead sticking with her old badge from previous years, calling the tracking devices the "mark of the beast." She tells Salon that the new badges make her uncomfortable and are an invasion of her privacy.

But to add to her restricted school grounds access, the teen says she was barred from voting for homecoming king and queen.

"I had a teacher tell me I would not be allowed to vote because I did not have the proper voter ID," she told WND. "I had my old student ID card which they originally told us would be good for the entire four years we were in school. He said I needed the new ID with the chip in order to vote."

If successful, the tracking program could save the district as much as $175,000 lost daily to low attendance figures, which in part determine school funding. Higher attendance could lead to more state funding in the neighborhood of $1.7 million. A statement on the school district's website lays out the program's goals: to increase student safety and security, increase attendance and offer a multi-purpose "smart" student ID card that streamlines grounds access and purchasing power.

While uncommon, RFID chips are not new to school IDs, according to Wired. Schools in Houston launched a monitoring program as early as 2004, and a federally funded preschool in California started placing RFID chips in children's clothes two years ago. Numerous districts have also considered similar programs, but without making them mandatory.
Essentially this school district's so bad on attendance they are sticking RFID tags on their students like they're packages in transit. This is highly unethical and a huge invasion of privacy if you ask me. What do you guys think?

Also, saying "of course this is in Texas" does not qualify as contributing to the conversation.

K thanx :D

I like it... it is called 'compulsory education' for a reason... and that is the standard!

I suppose I am bias though... I had a tough time in school because I obeyed rules, and now I work for an organisation that has a second law system on top of the national one, strict rules, strict uniform and they like to know where we are! :p

I don't see why not... it's in the parents interest as well as the schools to know where their kids are... well it should be anyway! If I skipped school, and my parents found out, I would have been in some serious shit!

An obvious attempt at voter suppression from the liberal school board in the upcoming homecoming elections.~

OT: Needless to say this is a bit...extreme. I was chronically absent from high school, but I don't think they ever even sent a truancy officer to the house. Also, the school that requires a call at 8 pm? Fuck that noise, 8pm is free time.

Hey, at least its better than giving students laptops to use for school and then not telling them that the laptops have a built in webcam that can't be disabled but that can be activated remotely and then having an unethical employee of the state try (and I think succeed) perv on high school girls via said webcam. In short RFID tracking students is better than a system that essentially enables and encourages child pornography but only by a little bit.

Actually so long as it's within school hours, I don't think it's a terrible idea, minus the "not allowed into common areas" thing. And fining kids might be a bit much as well. But personally, I wouldn't have cared if the school ID thing I had tracked where I was during school time. That may have been because I was a good boy and stayed in school, but maybe that's just me.

And what religious beliefs would stop someone from using this ID?

I don't necessarily disagree that an RFID tracking system is a good idea to ensure school attendance stays high. What I am disgusted by is the idea that this is being essentially forced on the student body. If anything else they should at least allow parents and independent students to opt out of this if they so choose.

Yeah, the whole "suspension/fine/forced transfer if you don't comply!" is really the biggest issue I have with this. Fuck if I care how much a student attends school (and I'm hoping to have power over their futures in a few years :D), but treating them like inmates isn't going to make them want to attend more.

If it wasn't for the fining students for not using the tracking system, I'd be fine with it. But that, combined with basically locking the kid out of doing anything but school work without it...I mean, seriously, students who are chronically truant are not going to get this. They don't get this, they are not going to be allowed to do anything but go to classes, and eat on breaks (from home, no cafeteria food). Is that more likely, or less likely, to encourage said students to attend?

Good way to put it. Oh, and you are now not the only person who changed their recognizable avatar. Ha!

People did notice my avatar before, right? Right? *weeps*

It was Tali, from Mass Effect. I had that avatar for over 4 years, and decided it was time for a change.

That's right, it was a promo shot from ME1 wasn't it? More purplish tint to her mask than there is in later games IIRC.

Correct. I put up the avatar during the lead-up to ME2, and it stayed until about an hour and a half ago.
Gratz on the change and welcome to the legion of the unknown. We can enter and exit threads without detection as people forgot we even exist!
