This was a movie on my radar, but I didn't have high expectations (I usually go into most with low expectations).

Well, I am surprised and excited to see that IGN at least has given it high praise!

These are the kinds of movies I wait for. Good acting, good premise, good payoff (which the review seemed to indicate).

And also it seems to be from the director who did both Sicario, and Prisoners, which are two really fantastic movies that I greatly enjoyed.

Getting a little hyped.

Was this movie on anyone else's list of new movies with promise?

I read the short story it's based on years ago, and enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to seeing this movie.

Zero expectations as I'm not too hot on Villeneuve. I'll see it, which is something, because there's a pretty good amount of stuff either releasing or playing festivals this fall/winter that I'm interested in.

YourMovieSucks posted a rather glowing review for it not too long ago. Everything he said about it makes me excited to see it;

Moon, Gravity, Interstellar, The Martian and now this. It's a good time to be a fan of sci-fi movies.[footnote]And no, Star Wars doesn't count. It's a fantasy/western with a space backdrop.[/footnote]

Hmm...on one hand, you call Interstellar and The Martian good (though I do like The Martian, just not as much as the book). On the other, you point out (correctly) that Star Wars isn't sci-fi.

I'm so torn! ;p

Snark aside, I will agree with the general consensus in that sci-fi is making a comeback (sort of, at least in the "hard sci-fi sub-genre) in the filmscape. In addition to Arrival, we've got Passengers and The Space Between Us to look forward to, and if we're counting indie films, I'll give shotout to 'Planet Unknown' and, to a lesser extent, 'Voyager'.

Damnit, I thought the thread was about The Arrival, which I remember much preferring over Independence Day as they both came out within months of each other.

I guess carry on then

I'll admit, I thought Interstellar's "grand finale" was dumb. I attempt to rationalize it by telling myself Cooper's hypothesis was wrong and some other unknown phenomenon brought him to his destination. As for The Martian, I haven't read the novel, so there was no other frame of reference for me to compare the film to. The book probably is better, as that's usually the case in such situations.

I watched it some weeks ago at the Venice Film Festival. It's a great sci-fi movie, genuinely concerned with developing the premise of interspecies communication as thoroughly (and realistically) as possible. On that note, it's very similar to Zemeckis'Contact.
