Scott Pilgrim vs the World is based off the comic and movie of the same name. Unlike a good deal of licensed games, this game is good, actually great. Scott Pilgrim vs the World is one of the few surprises I receive from video games. This game is a conglomerate of video game homages. During my play I noticed references to about nine different games (Note: Ubisoft loves the hell out of some Street Fighter). Half of this game's fun is trying to name them all. The most noticeable homage is the gameplay itself. It's a beat-em up game reminiscent of Double Dragon, Final Fight, and as I've heard River City Ransom. At first the game seems a little slow and the reason for that is because you're starting off at Lvl.1 with default stats. Walking speed increases as you buy items that increase the speed stat. When you level up you gain a new move and continue to do so until you reach the max level of 16. At that point you'll have to purchase the remaining extra move for your character.

The combat in the game is enjoyable and the pace gets faster the farther along you go. The difficulty in the game is quite hard even on the easiest mode on your first playthrough. Playing with friends makes things a bit easier, but of course it could make it harder if your friends happen to get themselves killed often. By the end of the game you will probably be frustrated as the last level is long and if you die you'll have to start from the beginning. Like old school games, it feels worth it once you actually beat the game. Despite all the difficulty the first time, the game is noticeably easier a second time and extremely easy if you didn't reset your character's stats.

One thing that irked me a bit in the game is that when you purchase items you can't tell what they actually do until you purchase it so you may waste money on something that you don't need or want.

There are a couple of hidden stores that give you great bonuses like major stat increases, a 1-up, or a new move. There's a video rental shop in the first level of the game, but you have to pay Scott's late fees of $500 before you can rent anything. Before acquiring some knowledge about a certain infinite money trick, I found trying to pay back the debt to be immensely frustrating and repetitive. Without the use of that trick it takes a considerable amount of time to accumulate that much money, even when grinding at the spots with high money drops. Once you pay the video fees you can rent movies that increase your stats a lot more than most of the game's shops. Oh, and when you unlock it only the player who payed the fees can rent movies so if you're player 1 and you paid the fees, your friends cant rent anything unless they pay $500 first too.

This game is filled with references from other video games. The game is kind of short of course considering its a downloadable game. There are a few catchy songs in the game that I enjoyed. The game can be a little glitchy in the ninja garden stage so expect to have trouble advancing in one area due to a ninja getting stuck off screen. There are a couple of extra characters and moves that I didn't unlock yet so I can't speak about those. I do question why this game didn't have online co-op. I wouldn't have minded paying an extra five or ten dollars in order to play this with my PSN friends. All in all this is a great game you need to check out. Also rent the movie while you're at it.
