Searching for a Comic Book Where the Good Guys Are Scum. Not that that's very descriptive. <_<

Okay, there was a series mentioned 4 or 5 years ago where an official "Avengers" or "Justice League" type group had an idealistic, naive new Super Heroine join---only to be informed by the resident Flying Brick that if she wanted to join them then she'd have to give two of the guys in the group Blow Jobs.

I blinked when I read that description. What?

The series also involved a super baby that started shooting lasers from his eyes (I think from inside his mother's womb) and was killed by someone desperate to stop the "monster".

And that's just the tip of the iceberg!

Anyone know which series this is?

You're thinking of The Boys by Garth Ennis
Bingo! Thanx!

I just ordered the first 6 collections but the first will only arrive 2 weeks after the rest. Should I read them or should I task myself with patience?

I'll leave this thread up for 48 hours should anyone wish to discuss the series. Failing that I'll sink it.

How much of a stomach do you have for gore and sex? Because that is an Ennis series, and well... Filling comics with basically the most depraved shit imaginable is kind of his thing. I mean, it isn't on the level of Boiled Angel, but still, for someone new to "mature" comics it will probably be shocking. XD

Haven't heard of Boiled Angel.

I'm scarcely new to mature comics--old guy here--but I'm a writer and I've toyed with the idea of writing a superhero novel since the late 80's so for me this is solid research into the "Dark Side" stuff that's already been delved into by other, professional writers.

Frankly I'm more in line with the "Please Don't Tell My Parents I'm A Super Villain" level of the genre but it's good to be informed and Ennis (now that you've ID'd him for me) was always good for Dark Side research. :D

I would not actually recommend The Boys. Well, I would recommend the first couple of trades. After that, the comic is just spinning its wheels in the mud for forty issues.

You'll see when you read it, I guess. The publisher decided they wanted sixty or seventy issues out of it, so Ennis had to stretch out the plot to its breaking point. I had other problems with the series; the main character is not sympathetic at all, the real main character (Butcher) is aggressively annoying, the protagonists in general are hypocritical douchebags, and the premise of the narrative (that the company making superheroes is having trouble selling them to the military) is absurd.

Ennis is great. So sad when Dillon died last year.
Who was Dillon?
Steve Dillon. Very accomplished artist with an immediately recognisable [https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/42/d5/e4/42d5e4ba6ef98acbbf418e17e7b39234--steve-dillon-the-punisher.jpg] art style. He did a lot of collaborations with Garth Ennis, like Preacher, Punisher, and Hellblazer.
