The first console my brother and I had was a Super Nintendo. Being children of the 16 bit era we have been building up our collection of classics we may have missed growing up. Maybe it's the nostalgia talking but we both love that era of games and now we're are trying to grow our collection of Sega Genesis titles. We already have the obvious ones like Sonic 1-3 and Streets of Rage 1 & 2 but we're having a hard time finding out which are the "classics" of the Genesis and most of the other games we've picked up for cheap have been disappointing. Any suggestions would be awesome, thanks all!

Maximum Carnage is a good Spider-Man game.
Phantasy Star IV is a good RPG.
Haunting: Starring Polterguy is a good wacky game.
Sonic the Hedgehog is good old-fashioned fun.

Etc.

My favorites beside Sonic were Ecco the Dolphin 1 and 2, The Lion King, Jurassic Park, Cool Spot (lol) and Fantastic Dizzy.

I've heard good things about Strider, Rocket Knight Adventures, and Aladdin (completely different game than SNES Aladdin), and I personally love Ecco the Dolphin*. Everything else I could suggest, I'm sure you've heard of.

*On the one hand, it's a water game with an air meter, which is just stupid. On the other, it's got a great mysterious atmosphere and it's refreshing 'cause you don't see many water games.

The Phantasy Star games are great JRPGs, and are worth playing almost for the music alone.

Arcus Odyssey is a fun isometric action RPG with co-op play.

There are a number of Shining games that are also quite good. All are RPGs of some stripe, but they vary from tile based first person dungeon crawls to Zelda clones. Of particular note are the Shining Force games. They are all excellent turn based tactical RPGs and will be instantly familiar if you've played anything more recent like the Final Fantasy Tactics series.

Beyond Oasis is a great Zelda-esque game with beautiful graphics that still hold up today.

Ecco is a dolphin, and dolphins need to breathe air to survive. So, not exactly stupid.

Vector Man, Vector Man, a thousand times Vector Man.

It's a great platformer/shooter, and attempting to play is on something other than a genesis has proven... problematic.

There was a really awesome game on the Sega where your character was a spaceman or something, and to get to the end of the level he had to find the hamburger.
Alex Kidd in Miracle World? That's Master System, not Genesis/Mega Drive.

OT: A good Genesis game? Hmm... just stick to the SNES.

Nobody's mentioned Altered Beast yet? (hahaha...)

Disney's Aladdin
Sonic Spinball (what? don't look at me like that, I had fun with it!)
Gunstar Heroes
Ristar
Mega Bomberman

If I think of any others that haven't been mentioned, I'll get back to you.

Oh, I know dolphins need air. I just meant it's a pretty stupid gameplay mechanic. Besides, it's not exactly like Ecco is an attempt at realism anyway, so I think they could have gotten away with not having an air meter.
Still a really good game though. That one mechanic just bugs me.

Phantasy Star II is an alright RPG
Phantasy Star IV is great RPG
Shinobi 3 is pretty good side-scroller
Altered Beast is an amusing little side-scroller
Gunstar Heroes is more or less a Contra clone, but at the same time is one of the best games on the console.

I disagree completely. I think, had they removed the air requirement, not only would it have totally gone against the chosen character but it would have made the game quite easy and generic. Adding the air meter created an instant source of extra tension to the puzzle solving and exploration that were crucial to the design of the game.
