Okay so, what are some 'shit just got real' moments in video game that your have experienced. Moments where the gloves were off, you went for broke and came out sucessful and feeling awsome. I just had one of those moments ,so i decided to ask you escapists for some of your own.

Just now, i was playing Dark souls. Basically when you die you lose your souls ( EXP ). Anyways , i just finished a boss, i had 30 000 souls on me , and i was backtracking to a blacksmith to repair my equipment and buy a key worth 20 000 souls. While i was backtracking, i got jumped by 3 guys ( humans ). Earlier on in the game ( 20 hours ago ) i killed a merchant ( later i learned he sold miracles so hes kinda like a templar or something ). Now at the exact spot where i killed him HOURS ago, theres this cleric chick and her two body guards attackign me for no reason. Stressed and packing a lot of souls i decided to flee. After spending all my souls i decide it's time to go pay them a visit, because they attacked me. Surprisingly enough, they killed me ( go figure). This pissed me off since i didn't do anything to them , and this is where shit got real. I was going to beat the living shit out of all three of them ( it was 3 on 1 ) if it was the last thing i did. I pulled all the stops , Parrying , timing my attacks, dodging , backstep EVERYTHING. Finally i managed to kill the cleric( who was healing herself the ***** !) , so i guess it was Fission Mailed for the templar guards. This filled me with glee ,but it wasn't over yet , we matched blow for blow , till i killed the first templar who was using magic to drain my endurance preventing me from blocking his attacks. Which him and the healer gone, the last guy was cake. The icing on the cake was the final blow which was the little animation of me parrying his final attack, countering him , putting him on his knees and my Gargoyle tail axe slicing his throat with him falling to the ground lifeless. When the battle ended i was overwhelmed with a sense of accomplishment and justice and it felt awsome and exilarating.

Playing Rome: Total War, back in the day...
I was playing as the Brutii (one of the Roman factions), and I had recently captured a city in Asia Minor, and for some reason (can no longer remember why) my big/main army was out of reach. And so in this city I just had 2 battalions of Town Watch, and I was besieged, because this country wanted their province back. So I had just under 160 men, against an army of about 600-700 men (actual soldiers as well).
I put one battallion on the wall, and one battallion behind the gate. My towers got rid of their battering ram (Lucky I had a stone wall, with inbuilt towers), so they had to go by ladder up the wall. So because they could only get in one way, I put all my soldiers there, and I killed just about all the enemies. When the Victory window came up, I was very very relieved and pleased, and BO YAH! 'shit just got real' as you say.
Once that army was gone, I started recruiting another one, and by the time they tried again to get the town back, I had a full army (about 1000 men...). If it weren't for that stand in Pergamum, I probably wouldn't have won that campaign. Then I wouldn't have been able to play as the Greeks!! D:

Bioshock, first attempt at taking down a big daddy.

"Okay, these armour piercing rounds should do the trick."
"Huh, he looks a bit cross."

"Oh Jesus fuck! Run! Cover, cover, cover!"

Fighting Freya in Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time. For the last quarter of the battle I had run out of all the variations of stun bombs (which were extremely necessary for the low level I was at). Without stun bombs, my chances of winning decreased so dramatically that I was quite prepared to just reset and start again. But since I'd gotten this far, I thought I may as well play it out till the end. I had to come up with a new strategy on the go. Shit got real intense for the next half hour as there were so many close calls and near death experiences. I have no idea how I was still putting up a fight but the moment I realised that I had beaten her, I stood up so overwhelmed with satisfaction that I could've easily pissed my pants and not cared at all.

City of Heroes. I was very new to the game, about level 8, and had mostly been running about the place, beating up street thugs and muggers and paramilitary flunkies. While running to a mission the sky above the city zone I was in turned green and what sounded like air raid sirens went off.

I didn't have a clue what was happening. Looking up I saw what looked very much like alien space ships overhead, bombing the city, and then the ground forces started teleporting in.

It was a zone event - a Rikti invasion, and whilst I've been through dozens of them since that time I will never forget that one. The fight my lowbie hero had against just a couple of Rikti soldiers was just epic (particularly when I took a kick at one and he appeared to dodge it by teleporting out of range onto a nearby rooftop) and made all the moreso by the fact I had no idea what was going on.

And by the fact I survived it without any defeats. That always helps.

World of Warcraft. Allow me to set a scene.

Ten people have gathered, their skills and weapons sharp, their minds and magic ready, at the base of the Lich King's Citadel. It looms overhead, and they all shiver with anticipation, knowing that on the next day the Cataclysm will strike. This is their last chance at stopping the evil leader of the Scourge. His minions prove to be nothing but pitiful roadblocks, each crumbling beneath the small group of heroes and within an hour the Lich King's final commandant, Sindragosa the Ice Dragon, is felled, leaving the Frozen Throne defenseless.

The fellowship travel to the Throne, Tirion Fordring standing by their sides as the Lich King smirks from his throne. His powers prove to be too much for the paladin, and he is frozen by Frostmourne before the Lich King engages the rest of the small group in final combat. It is a long battle, his minions doing everything they can to hinder the group, with friends being picked off one by one due to Valkyrie. The Lich King is no fool; He uses all of his powers to keep the fighters on their toes, the arena itself becoming hostile to their presence, forcing them to adapt their tactics and retreat for the moment. The souls of the Lich King's previous victims begin swarming overhead, harnessed by the evil lord and used as (un)living bombs against the few remaining leaders. All seems lost, with only a lone paladin and warlock left alive, desperately whittling away at the Lich King with no hope left, and then . . . it seems he was simply toying with them the entire time.

The Lich King shouts out that they were indeed, Azeroth's greatest champions, and the paladin and warlock are struck dead, Frostmourne channeling at the souls of the entire party to resurrect them as the Lich King's new Scourge lieutenants. All hope is lost . . . but wait! Tirion, using the power of the Ashbringer, breaks free of his icy tomb and charges the Lich King, destroying Frostmourne! The souls of the people killed at the hands of the Lich King are released to the world, including the soul of the former Arthas Menethil's own father. Terenas Menethil summons the power of the Light from beyond the grave and uses it to resurrect the defeated party, and as the souls of the Lich King's victims swarm around him in anger, the warlock smirks under his cloth hood as it is with great pleasure that he lands the killing blow on the demented undead lord, a final flame cresting over his blackened armor as Arthas Menethil collapses to the ground, defeated, the last thing he sees being the soul of his father telling him that he will finally be able to rest in peace.

Back in Demon's souls, on my first character(Hunter), encountering the armoured spider. After all, Phalanx was hardly intimidating and I was expecting Vanguard to push my teeth in, at the end of the tutorial.

In Dark Souls, when I was first parried by a basic enemy, I realised exactly what it had in store.

Back in Icecrown Citadel, when LKs defile grew to nearly twice its size due to a second delay.

When I was playing Portal 2, (specifically, the last few segments of Chapter 7) I actually began to hyper ventilate. I've got a big fear of heights and during that segment you just end up climbing HIGHER and HIGHER.

I actually breathed a sigh of relief when I got the damn hatch open to let me back into the main facility again. It was fucking SCARY for me!

The correct answer is as simple as it is obvious, for it is a lone sentence.

ARE YOU A BAD ENOUGH DUDE TO RESCUE THE PRESIDENT?

I just want to tell you that the cleric guy that you killed was their teammate. He mentions that he is waiting on a lady and two other bodyguards. That is why they attacked you.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Mine was back in the planetside beta, I had just logged on and it sounded like the TR was gearing up for a raid on enemy held islands (back when there was only one portal) so I went and joined in at the main portal, it was awesome, heavy tanks all lined up as maruader and lightnings drove around them, mosquito light fighters zoomed around the air as galaxy dropships took turns landing and picking up troops and light vehicles, it took like 30 minutes for everyone to get all loaded and ready for war and it was one of the most epic feelings of, shit is getting real, ever as I manned the main gun on a heavy tank and watched as our huge force set off to conquer and conquer we did, the huge force only stayed together for a few islands but we crushed all resistance under us.

In Chrono Trigger, that scene where Robo is just getting wailed on by those other bots. You don't really know much about him, and you know even less about the others, but just seeing that little guy getting pummeled repeatedly really got to me.
The worst part about it, which I didn't find out until later, was that you can try and stop the bots but they just smack you back. I mean, that scene was bad enough for me the first time around, when I was just standing there. The next time I played was even worse, somehow.

In Star Wars Battlefront 2, all my comrades had fallen, leaving me alone against the enemy. Those health droids are very very useful and allowed me to conquer the Rebel scum.

Thanks to the Ambassador program, I was finally able to play the original Metroid. It's a fun title but once you get to Tourian shit gets CRAZY. The Metroids are faster than the other enemies and leech your health quick. I was able to get a pattern down after a few deaths but once you get to Mother Brain's lair, that's when shit gets a little bit less than fair.

To continue harping on about NES games, moving on from Zelda to Zelda 2 in general is another Shit-Just-Got-Real moment. Especially when you get to death-pit areas...

Everything ever in Dark Souls.
Especially the sewer boss.

"ok wide open area. It's obviously going to be a boss fight.

What's that? It's a head peaking out of the hole in the floor. What is it? kinda looks like an armored seal. looks kinda cute.

Ok so it's coming out of the hole.

I was playing Last Remnant (Turn Based) this morning and had just set my three groups up to attack a normal mob. The kind of mob I had already blendered about 20 of that hour. I set the controller down, went to get a drink, come back and find two of my groups are dead and the third is down to half life. "Well, the shit has just gotten real." I thought. I managed to pull it out, but it was close.

P.S. Fuck You Captcha!

Arkham Asylum.

The moment after Penny died, and the group of men all surrounding the groogy batman who jumps up on his fist crack his knuckles and sliently whispered

"Bring that shit."

Needless to say, The Dark Knight did not get hurt in that battle.
