Today, Creative Assembly officially announced a sequel to their first Total War game, titled Shogun II: Total War, it's set in seventeenth century Japan, and will feature nine playable factions as well as customizable generals, "hero" units, and support for up to 56,000 soldiers in one battle.

Any thoughts?

wait... 17th century? That's 1600's, I thought the countdown went past into the late 1500's but I guess I was wrong or they pulled a fast one.

No matter, I don't have the rig to play it no matter waht the case.

There was a rome mod out called Troy Total war and it had special, "Hero" units. not sure how that panned out becasue I never played it but it sounds vastlly stupid unless it's just a special, "we have special awesome swords of death!" units.

56K sounds just about awesome though.

Still, Idon't have the tech to run it so... It receives a collective, "meh"

edit: I was right! 1545 is the last date they put on their site.

looking forward to it, and though I have heard a lot of hate about the hero units; maybe they just mean regular units with a much higher quality of equipment.

If it has the original elements of assassinations, suicide of generals and damiyos, and other things that made the original awesome, then I'll be glad to add this game to my collection

I can't remember playing the original really since it was very little and so long ago but I seem to remember hating the money and quarter year systems.

As long as they add some unit variety and improve on some systems I'll be more than happy. Also hoping they don't make it more graphically intense than Empire so I can actually run it.

I'd rather have had something with a bit more variety.

Don't get me wrong, Shogun was great. It's just that one of the main draws of the TW games for me was that you'd have a lot of different factions, all with their own culture, units, tactics, etc.

If the entire game takes place in 17th century Japan, I'm afraid the differences between factions will be very small compared to Medieval or Rome.

Are there gunpowder and melee combat in conjunction (Swords and muskets) and are the gunpowder units like the foot line regiment from empire and napolean?
And expanding on Hurr's question will the factions have much variety?

I'm not sure about it. I joined the series with medieval 2 and it went downhill from there. Empire was alright, but not as good als medieval 2. Napoleon was a rip off.

To me the fun from a total war game alsways came from building a huge empire, seeing your color crawling across the map. I dont' know weather the same effect will take place in a japan-only-game. But then again I'm short on information about the game, may be we get to move on to china as well.

It sounds really nice, i was hoping for them to take a crack at world war 2 but i guess this will be nice to try, Shogun was before me, i came to the Total war series when Rome was released.

Sounds great. I'm quite fine with everything they announced, but I do have one wish - decent AI. Total War are mostly single player games, but the AI was never all that good, reaching what is best described as "Embarrasingly Moronic" in Empire. I know part of the initial announcement included promises of a competent AI and I hope with all my heart that it's not just empty promises.

I was never able to play Shogun, I like the news that this era is being remade though. Nice to also see a move away from the European theatre too.

I can't agree whit you more on that both types of AI in ETW was ridicolus since the computer thought they were supposed in a trade that if what you get aint times better then what you give its a ripoff:(. and when your troops starts doing crazy random shit and getting killed instead of following your orders in battle. Oh and the diffculty levels are bullshit instead of making the AI smarter in a STRAGEY game where youre soppused to out smart your enemy they just make the enemy militia shit troops pwn your elite troops in 1on1 combat is just wrong!

the game is still awesome though.

I think the reason I didn't like Napoleon but loved Rome was because I didn't like managing cannons and rifleman, I'll have to check it out.

They said this about Empire too, remember? They even showcased their AI in those pre-release video spotlights. What was seen there and what they delivered to the players were miles apart. I have become very jaded in regards to Total War titles. Medieval 2 wasn't a stellar release, but it cleaned up nicely with Kingdoms and the patches. Empire I still find is hard to play because there are so many issues that haven't been resolved and never will be.

I am afraid that Shogun 2 will just be another Empire release. They have set a release date 1,5 years into the future maximum (2011) and all we have so far is two teaser-trailers. I sense another TW-disaster coming on.
