I've got a hankering for a somewhat realistic shooter, set in present/near future times, conventional ballistic weapons, low on the bullet sponges, both on your side and the enemy side. Basically, something a little like Call of Duty, only...better. Bit of a better story, less uncomfortable coincidences of the good guys being overly white, and the bad guys being anything else, and some more interesting gameplay. I can't really depend on my internet much right now, so the single player has to be good. I have played and enjoyed Operation flashpoint: red river before, but I don't really have the time to commit to what is sometimes up to an hour per mission right now, so a bit faster paced. Any ideas?

I don't know if you can find it, but there are some folks on these forums that liked Rainbow Six Vegas. It's available as a download. And a friend of mine really loved Medal of Honor Airborne back when it first came out. I can only assume that it's like the original MOH that I remember from PC, which opens with the landing at Omaha Beach. The game engine is primitive compared to today's games but there was something special about that opening scene.

Considering your requirements, and this one's a long shot, but I think you need to find the original Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, the very first game that started it all. It's just ten bucks on Steam [http://store.steampowered.com/app/15300/] but it can still be found in the UK for console.

.

Have you played it already?

Make no mistake, this game is from the original Xbox days, the ten pound monster, but it's backwards compatible on 360. At least it's BC here in the US. The game isn't terribly long, but I think you'll appreciate being able to control every member of your squad, individually in first person, not just watching them as you give them orders. If I recall correctly, I believe you can save in the middle of a mission. I think I remember loading a game and seeing the danger indicator at the bottom of the screen telling me that I was surrounded. To be honest, it's been so long since I've played.

Amazon is usually a safe bet. Here's one [http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tom-Clancys-Ghost-Recon-Xbox/dp/B00006LK08/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1411651812&sr=8-13&keywords=tom+clancy%27s+ghost+recon] with "£4.86 & FREE Delivery in the UK on orders over £10."

It's a slow game at times, but so much more realistic than modern shooters.
Here's another [http://www.amazon.co.uk/Clancys-Ghost-Recon-Xbox-Classics/dp/B0000DG2TA/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top] for £3.99 plus £2.03 for shipping, and if you're more of an eBay person, here's one [http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ORIGINAL-XBOX-GAME-360-TOM-CLANCYS-GHOST-RECON-1-FAST-POST-COMPLETE-/351174924674?pt=UK_PC_Video_Games_Video_Games_JS&hash=item51c3a81982] for £2.49 with free economy shipping.
