Epic fantasy was once thought as a genre reserved for geeks but Game of Thrones has garnered a huge audience. If fantasy can do it, I'm sure a well written, good looking, and high production value space opera could go far. After GOT is finished should HBO gives us a big budget epic space opera?

No, sci-fi should remain obscure and niche like Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who or Avatar.

The entire proposal is iffy - you don't "make" something mainstream, it becomes mainstream based on its quality and/or accessibility.

But if you're suggesting that HBO should adapt a sci-fi work in the same vein as Game of Thrones, I'd reccomend Dune. True, Syfy gave us some adaptations, but I think they could be done better.

Star...wars? LOL Never heard of it. Is that the black and white movie from France?

I like the concept of science fiction. I heard there was a popular sci-fi show back in the day, you probably never heard of it, but it was called Firefly. Might want to check it out. I mean it's super obscure, only 13 episodes were made.

LotR a decade before it, and sci-fi has been mainstream for decades more.
