should hit points be called health points

I know this is meaningless but I always wondered why is how much health you have is called hit points. I mean they call it a health bar not a hit bar and health points make a little more sense because hit points sounds like how many hits you can do.

But dealing hits and taking hits are 2 very different things. How much damage you do is called well damage.
