I am currently in the US and getting bored with my life. It occurred to me the other day that it would be cool to study abroad and I've always wanted to see Australia.

So, has anyone here done something like that? Does anyone live in Australia? What is a good school?

I'm curious about people who live there or have lived there and what their opinion is about it.

I went to the ANU. It was awesome. Located in boring as all hell Canberra, the college life was awesome and aside from nights out on the town, I rarely had to leave Campus ^_^ Which degree are you thinking of?

That/s an awesome idea, unfortunately I have no idea how you'd do it, talk to your guidance counselor or try and get in touch with a college in Australia would be my best guess

My partner is Australian and I have spent quite a bit of time there.

1. First of all, Australians don't call Universities "schools". The best University in Australia is the Australian National University if I recall correctly. That's in the capital, Canberra. Other good universities include The University of Sydney and The University of New South Wales. They are both in Sydney.

2. I highly recommend the country. It's beautiful. It's very similar to the UK culture wise, but the climate, the land and the people are improved by a million.

3. Don't lie down in the grass. Seriously, you can't do that there.

I think one of the best parts of getting an education in Aus are the TAFE courses. It basically means that you don't need to go to Uni to get the job you want.

Could always try a TAFE institute, thier are alot of foreign students at the local TAFE i study at and its fairly cheap and simpler to get into while providing strong education.

Ver' important question because once you start looking at specialised degrees your choices of university and campus dwindle rapidly.
Well right now my declared major is History. I'm thinking I'll get a degree in Western History so I can teach it. I don't imagine its too different there, is it?

They won't let you teach here on just a history degree. You'd have to pick up a post-grad certificate in education as well or do dual degrees in history and education.

On the upside, every uni in Oz has a decent history dept, even when they're spread over a couple of campuses, so you can pretty much pick where you want to go.

Watch out for the drop bears. They WILL take your face off if you're not careful. Don't go out without Vegemite behind your ears, they hate the smell of it.

They don't let us teach here without education in education either. I just meant that I would eventually like to teach. Either way, I would like to live in Australia for a while.

Any idea on where in Oz you'd like to live?
What is Oz? And if you mean Australia, somewhere in the south ideally. Melbourne ideally. But I dont really care in general. Just somewhere nice where it's not super expensive,

Well, I'm an Australian studying History at UQ (University of Queensland, best in the state and generally considered the third best in the country) as part of my Arts Major at the moment. There are a whole bunch of foreign students enrolled all over campus, and I'm good friends with a few of them. As someone else mentioned, most Universities in Australia have a decent History department, and I know UQ at least has a fairly strong foreign exchange system.

Since part of your motivation is to see Australia, that could have a few impacts. You probably want a Uni in one of the larger cities, as opposed to ANU, unless you plan on travelling a lot in the holidays.

Edit: and yeah, Oz means Australia.

Where is UQ? And you guys have States instead of Provinces or Territories? I didn't know that!

I wouldn't mind traveling- if the FE program is a good one and is affordable, then that's cool with me. I also don't want to live somewhere that is super expensive. Any suggestions? Other than the ones you've aleady given, of course.

If you're interested in Queensland (which you should be), UQ is a pretty good uni, with a huge campus and being close to the middle of Brisbane.

Brisbane also has The Manabar. Just saying.

I would imagine most large university's would have a section for "international student admissions" on their web sites where you could see what their requirements are for admission and what you need to do to get in as an international student. If anything, you could always just email their admissions departments saying that you're a international student looking to go to their university and they could probably supply you with all the information you need.

Are you Asian with a rich family? because im pretty sure thats like a new prerequisite for getting into ANU as a foreign student.
I suggest having a shotgun wedding with a homeless person to get citizenship, thats your best bet for getting into a good uni in Australia
