Should I keep my preorder of Dead Space 3?

I'm really on the fence when it comes to Dead Space 3. I recently preordered the PC version of Dead Space 3 off of amazon. A deal in which you get a free $20 gift card.

Anyway I am a pretty big fan of the Dead Space franchise. And even with the concerning changes like co-op single player. I still want to play the game and give it a decent shot.

But the problem comes in the form of EA. I find the thought of supporting their policies gross. And the last thing I want is EA thinking that things like the required online pass, or the ridiculously priced amount of day one dlc is a good thing. And like the things discussed in Jim Sterling's recent video I find the choices they made for Dead Spaces 3's crafting system that pushes micro transactions despicable.

In the end I think I'll get Dead Space 3 either way. Its just the difference between a preorder, and buying it at a later date used.

But then that runs the risk of the franchise just no longer existing at all. In the end is it worth supporting such a anti consumer company like EA if it means that games you enjoy continue to be made?

Well the question is do you want to support the franchise to continue going down this way until it's utterly horrid or end on a good note.

If this sells well you can be damn sure they aren't coming back from the Gears format.

i would say no but then i haven't even played dead space 1 or 2 so meh.

it really comes down to this, are you okay with micro transactions in your game? if yes, but it and youll see it a lot more, in no, dont buy it and ea will still keep doing it but any other company hopefully will not.

I think it's worth bearing in mind that even if you do buy the game used, you are still supporting the game's development and existence. You may not be as directly supporting the game financially, but you're still going to show up in various places as a statistic denoting you as a player of the game. EA, and any other publisher, will be looking at that as at least some form of approval notably because there's really no way for them to tell why you are playing the game but presumably without an online pass. Maybe you have major moral issues with the company. Maybe you just saw the game in a used games bin at your local game store and thought it looked cool. Put simply, buying something used is not really a valid form of commentary if you truly feel your moral convictions hold much weight. It's sort of like objecting to the way KFC treats chickens by only going to KFC once a week instead of every day.

Personally, I feel the best way to speak out is to A.) actually speak out, B.) abstain from supporting things you don't agree with and C.) actively support things you do agree with. Contact EA, even if just by Twitter, and let them know how you feel. Don't play Dead Space 3 at all. Go out and spend your money on similar titles or support projects that you don't have objections with.

There's a double-edged sword when it comes to supporting things that EA publishes.

On the one hand, if you genuinely enjoy their games, you should support them while criticizing and avoiding practices you don't like, such as micro-transactions, DLC, etc., whatever it may be.

On the other hand, if you buy it new there's a good chance EA is going to assume nothing is wrong with what they're doing and they'll keep going right on down the same road like they have been the past few years. EA seems to be willfully deaf to the complaints about their practices, it's quite interesting how effectively they've blocked it all out.

If you like the game, buy it. Don't deny yourself the experience because you don't like the publishers. Don't worry about the possible consequences of buying it or not buying it, just play the games you love and be happy.

Don't feel like you have to play a game day one if you don't know if you'll like it. The game will be just as good several months down the line (probably even better, with patches and whatnot), especially if you aren't planning on doing multiplayer.

Don't pay full price for something unless you're sure that you're going to enjoy it.

I think that giving up something you love is worth it if it stops the growth of a much larger entity that you hate.
Much like the amputation of an infected limb to spare the rest of the body (though when it comes to business, this would require a good many people chopping their limbs off)...

To solve all of your dilemmas, it would be to not buy it regularly.
Get it used, massively discounted. Then play it. Or just skip it altogether.
Your choice, not mine.

I'm getting it and I have no intention of doing any micro-transactions, buying new suits, new weapons, new ANYTHING. I'm certain you can play the entire game without doing any of that. The only DLC I plan to pay for is story DLC. I too preordered it off of Amazon for that free $20.

Honestly, I feel the answer is this: if you have to even ask that question, then yes, you should cancel your preorder. You've already made up your mind and you're just looking for confirmation. As you said, it will still be around later and you can pick it up cheaper then. If you really want to stick it to EA, you can buy a used copy down the road. Mua ha ha.

I honestly think that this will be the last Dead Space game. Well, the last game staring Isaac. Okay...I HOPE it's the last game, but we all know that won't happen. Still, I can't really see where they're going to take the story after this one. Unless Dead Space 4 deals with going after the Government and their Markers after Isaac wipes out the Unies in this game.

There's a $20 gift certificate attached to it now? I pre-ordered mine months ago before Amazon tagged that on, that'll be a nice treat.

As for whether or not to buy it day one or buy it used, that is entirely up to you. However, I think the idea of not supporting a game because of the publisher defeats the purpose because the publisher isn't going to look at a lack of sales means they're doing something wrong, but it's the development studio. Just look at Radical Entertainment from last year. Granted, they were under Activision, but same business model more or less applies to EA.

This isn't to say I'm at all stoked for the inclusion of micro transactions within the game, or the co-op. However, it looks like Visceral actually thought about how to use co-op and make it interesting by have the co-op, Carver, being affected by the Marker and seeing things that aren't actually there. It could be a good mechanic if done right, and Visceral has proven to be very innovative with mechanics in the previous DS games in very subtle ways, so I have faith it might work.

And, you know, if you don't have anyone to play co-op/ don't WANT to play co-op... you don't HAVE to.

But I digress. Instead of having a full-out freakout I know a lot of other Dead Space fans have been having, I'm taking my disappointment with the bloat developing on this game and take a scalpel to it instead of a machete. I'm buying the game day one. I'm going to support the developers. I'm NOT however going to buy any extraneous guns or suits anything from the crafting bench. I'm speaking with my wallet on that part. Simple.

EA isn't going to care about when you bought it, only how successful it was. If you don't like them, stop playing their games. If you like the game more then you hate EA, then get it. If not, don't. It's that simple.

On a side note, I always wonder if a game's failure is ever actually researched to see what happened. A game is full of many many variables that could have caused it to fail and I always wonder if a company ever really learns why it failed or simply has to guess.

No, don't purchase it. EA has already stated that if the game doesn't sell to their expectations, they will can the franchise.

With the direction it's headed down, this game deserves to be humanely put down before EA can further butcher it.

I'm not a very big fan of the series and I hate EA. So I would cancel the pre-order. But if you're a big fan and you're getting a $20 gift card, then go ahead and keep the pre-order. If it sells well they'll keep making these games until you get sick of them, and if it doesn't they'll just let it die like Medal of Honor.

^ Words of wisdom.

Is there anything in Dead Space 3 that is completely unacceptable that would prevent you from buying the game?
If yes, don't buy.
If no, then buy it if you like it.

I've seen a lot of little "That's a small turn for the worse" things in DS3, but nothing major. I probably be buying it because I like "Gears of War clones" anyways.

They are killing the franchise themselves, and we are powerless to stop it. I say fuck them.

i personally have not played ME3 despite loving that franchise to death, because i decided to boycott all ea published products because of their business practices. I have nothing but contempt for the way they conduct themselves towards their customers an have not bought anything from them since 2009/10

the gift card is pretty sweet, but your purchase is a vote for their way of publishing games, if you cannot stand to support them, then forget the game. But it is just entertainment so do as you wish, just remember that a purchase=vote

do you want to play the game at launch? if yes -keep your pre-order. if no -cancel it.

whether or not you get the game is going to have virtually no impact upon the any games future development. EA as knows how it wants to run its business and that isnt going to change just because one game tanks or does well
