Should I keep playing Dragon Age?

OK, so to start off I'm a huge fan of all sorts of RPG'S, the KOTOR series, fallout, elder scrolls, mass effect. So far I have wracked up a total playing time of 10 hours on Dragon Age Origins and as much as I don't find the game 'bad', I don't find it particularly 'good' either. The bit I'm up to btw is where I've just helped some old dude by getting him the earn of ashes. So basically I'm wondering does the game get better if I persist, or will I continue to be unimpressed? Remember, I WANT to like the game, I just want to know if my reasons for not liking it is because of my personal taste, or because I haven't played it long enough. Thanks

Tell me, is this your first time playing the game? As with all the people I've spoken to have all said, including me, that they didn't enjoy it the first time they played it. They then took a break from it for a month then tried it again and they loved it. As if it gets better from there, it does in my eyes, although the Orzammar quest is one of the longest and hardest ones in the game.

Anyway, what are your problems with the game exactly? Is it not pulling you in as much as other games or is it something else?

Precisely, when I play other RPG's I get very immersed, particularly Fallout, I have had the game since it's release date, and have been on and off it for about A year, I only recently started playing it after having not played it for about 3 months, I don't understand why I don't like it as I said I love other bioware RPG's, is there any hope? lol

After you get out of the near endless purgatory of trying to assemble an army, the story picks up from crap to okay. The gameplay never really gets any better though.

Hm. I don't know if you should continue playing it. What was your origin choice?

I chose Dwarven Noble Rogue...and I was hooked, immersed, and emotionally invested from the very beginning. As a matter of fact, the game still lingers with me. (I'm still mad at my character's brother, I still want to know what happened to...)

I love Dragon Age, and while I logged in over 110 hours in Fallout 3, I was more emotionally invested in Dragon Age...so it might just be a matter of taste.

Now...I'm the kind of person who doesn't quit games lightly as a matter or personal stubbornness. So I'd say keep playing. But if you just aren't having fun...I'd say:

1. Try a different origin story and see if that does it for you.
2. Play it to the end to be stubborn.
3. Quit because you aren't having fun.

Eh, I've always had trouble with it. The story came off as really generic, and all I could do was just shake my head at all the Jordan-esque terminology. But there's something that bothers me about a lot of recent Bioware titles, and that's that they just come off as boring.

GOD, KEEP PLAYING.

I mean, the army-gathering quests kind of suck dick. In terms of length (shortest to longest), it's the Dalish elves one, the Circle of Magi one, then the quest in Orzammar which has like three major parts to it. I hate the Magi quest. You're by yourself most of the time and the whole thing is rather tedious. After that, the quests get much more fun.

This isn't to say I didn't enjoy that part of the game. I love Dragon Age. I've gotten to my like, sixth playthough and that's where I ran out of motivation. If you don't like it, then you don't like it. But just try to keep with it. The story's great.

I found that the story wasn't new, the characters were mediocre, the gameplay wasn't great and the main quests were way too long and monotonous, especially Orzammar - it got to the point where I was just playing to beat it, not because I was having fun. Seriously, it's just roads and lava and roads and lava ad infinitum and most of the time all you're fighting is Darkspawn and it all takes soooo long.

That said, I did enjoy Dragon Age more as the game went on. The characters got slightly less terrible, I worked out how to skip dialogue and cutscenes, and I got used to the gameplay. I think my main problem was just how long everything took, and how unvaried most of it was. Oh and the fact that it was all so brown, by all means use colour in moderation, but at least use it.

So yeah, I'm a fan of RPGs as well, and while overall I'd say I liked Dragon Age, I don't love it, and I wouldn't recommend it to people over other games in the genre. It got more enjoyable as it progressed, and eventually I will play it again, but for now I'd rather play something with a bit more colour and variety.

Tastes vary of course, what is a good game to one person is not good to another, and liking a genere does not mean your going to like every game in that genere.

Speaking for myself I think "Dragon Age" is pretty average for an RPG all told, it's just that not many developers even try to make RPGs anymore, so it doesn't have much in the way of competition. Pretty much everything out there is some kind of action-RPG hybrid, or someone claiming that any amount of customization counts as making something into an RPG.

Compared to a lot of the games from the bygone golden age of the genere, like Ultima, Wizardry, or even to some extent Might and Magic, the game is pretty shallow. Sure it has new technology with which to tell it's fairly typical storyline, but in the end you really don't have all that many options for customizing characters or anything, you simply have more than what most other games allow at the moment.

I have "Dragon Age 2" pre-ordered, but honestly I think it benefits a lot from being the only game in town (so to speak).

I would say you should keep playing, if anything you might hit a section that is a gem. Or it might even help you to realize more about what you don't like in games. But now I will spoil a part and this will be the only reason to say stop so if you don't want to know don't click the spoiler...
The mediocre game builds up the atmosphere of a huge battle at the end, but it really isn't that huge and only have a handful of enemies at once. The main boss battle at the end is uneventful and monotonous.

Hmm, I liked the game but found the ending a bit meh, so it's really up to you. I liked the Urn of Ashes quest and the one in the Dwarf undercity, but wasn't super impressed with the others as far as I can remember. I found the character interactions more interesting than anything else, so if that doesn't keep your attention and you still don't enjoy the game, I say what's the point.

Really? Because I played through the game once, loved it, but can't imagine ever playing through it again.

I'm like you, I love RPGs have have a similar play history. i put about 80 hours into dragon age and to be frank I want the time and my money back. Play the game for 1/2 hour and you can guess the entire plot.. the character and RPG mechanics are so simplistic and bland that they're an insult to the genre. Ok some of its is alright at best, but is it really worth the investment of time and effort? I don't think so.

Many will disagree and YMMV.

The Origin can make or break the game, really. I found the Dalish origin rather bland, while the City Elf origin got me hooked right from the get-go. I'd recommend just trying it different ways; different origin, different class, different party.
It's a Bioware game, so you either end up loving it or hating it for what it is. I loved the characters, the dialogue, the world - then again, I love reading, so to have a story be interactive is enough of a bonus that I could overlook the repetitive gameplay.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE reading, just can't get into the game, also my origin story is the human noble by the way.

Whaaaat!? The Circle of Magi part was my favorite in the entire game, I love not relying on lame teammates and owning legions of dudes by myself :D

Haha, well, mostly what I hated was how drawn out it was. The first time I saw the map of the different "islands" or whatever, I was just like FFFFFFFFFFF--
I also missed having people to talk to :'(

I liked it from the start. You have to get immersed in the story tho and I didn't find that as easy as with other rpg's. I'd say: If you have nothing better to do. Play it. It will get better. If you have something better to do like say... Watching ron and stimpy or having sex. I'd do that.
