Should I play the original Borderlands?

I really like Borderlands 2 but I've hardly played the original (I played it once for like half an hour years ago), and I've been wondering if I should pick it up. Playing as some different classes and with the different guns and stuff seems neat and I can pick up the GOTY edition for about £15 but I don't know if I should.

What do you think? Would it be worth going back to the original and giving it another go or should I not bother?

Also for a little extra discussion value what class build are you using in Borderlands 2 (if you're still playing that is :p)?

This is mine:

+4 Sweet Release skill from the Heavenly Nurse class mod

I like it, suits my play style :D

EDIT: Should probably mention it's on 360 not PC.

The story is complete crap and the gameplay in Borderlands 2 is better, so there really is no point to play it.

I reckon the first one is the better game. If you've got anyone you can co-op it with then you should play it.

I think the second one is much more entertaining and well designed overall. If you really feel the need to try it, I'd wait for it to go on sale again.

Honestly, as much as I loved the first borderlands, 2 is overall better.

OVERALL. 2 also ruined certain things that were better in 1 (No health regen shields, no exp for weapons, no artifacts, no way to replay the funny echos, overall better loot experience, seems more solo friendly than 2, and a few more I cant remember right now), but again, overall 2 is better, most of those are mainly because they were in 1 and I was a little dissapointed than they didnt returned, but since you didnt played 1 first... you wont quite feel that.

You are too fucking OP in 1 while in 2 this is not the case for the most of the part. But if you dont mind that, and just want some shooting, leveling up and exploring... then I dont see why you wouldt give 1 a try either.

Sure, it's going to be a 'downgrade' of sorts from B2, but it's still the same style humor and some fun DLC.

That, and if you wait for the right sell, it costs next to nothing. I bought it off steam 2 years ago for $7.50

As much as I loved the original Borderlands, I can't think of a single thing in particular that it does better than the sequel. Not playing it also means you avoid the fucking stupid ending =P

And I haven't played Borderlands 2 since Christmas, as a mixture between too many new games and all my friends fucking off to play on PC. Bastards.

For fifteen standard currency units, get it. Unless you are severely underfunded, as in it's either Borderlands or eating next week, it will be worth the money. It's a great sequel, and the consensus seems to be that "if you liked the first one, you'll like the second one." And by that same token, if you liked the second one, you'll like the first one.

Sure BL2 is the better game, but only by increments. BL is the same running-gunning-looty-goofy fun. And getting the full game with all the dlc means you get to play The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, possibly the single greatest dlc package I've ever purchased. Robot Revolution is really good too. 15 pounds is a great deal for all that.

I actually really didn't like the first borderlands. I liked the second a lot more, but the first one is really boring, IMO.

You don't need to. People are right in stating it would be a "downgrade". The only real incentive to play the first one is for story continuation. The story is worse in the first game and there is way more (and better) humor in the second game as well. There are some references you may not be able to appreciate in the second game, but that is about it.

Personally, yes, you should. For some reason, the second game never clicked with me, but I loved the first game. I felt that the special abilities in the first game were more unique and that they actually did something instead of in the second game. I found a lot of people thought I was wrong, but hey, it's just me.

I think it'd be more of an academic adventure, because the sequel is better overall and better in most ways. The original is a bit better in itemisation; not that BL2 is bad (not by a long way compared to other loot-em-ups), but the first was better. If you want one game to look to as a measure on how to handle loot, it's the original Borderlands. And I guess the Knoxx DLC as a self contained bit of content has some fantastic level and character design (the BL2 DLCs so far have been pretty good actually, but not Knoxx good). It's the sort of thing people will look back on and point to rather than the sort of thing people will carry on replaying; now that BL2 is out, you'd play that instead.

Build wise, I've got a Zer0 and a Maya at level 50. The Zer0 is down the middle tree using the kunai things. The key talents (Rising Shot, Two Fang) work best with fast firing weapons, so I've got him tooled up with plenty of Vladofs. Oh Em Gee I love Vladofs. My Maya was my Coop toon so I levelled her with the Harmony tree. That was pretty meh all up until I got the Scorn talent, when suddenly it all made sense. It's actually pretty fun, even solo, having this very survivable very tanky character that has a big damage debuff they can spew out. I love it. Of the two, I'd say Zer0 is the better character passively, but Maya's abilities are so much more useful. Like, if you name me an annoying enemy type (e.g. anything melee, anything flying, Ion loaders), I bet you the Phaselock is useful against it. There seems to be nothing that move doesn't have an answer for.

I actually found the first one boring to the extent I could never finish it and always gave in after a few hours. The second one on the other hand was a lot better and liked a lot of the moments in that game. ANd shock horror I finished it.

So if you want my opinion, no, I don't think you should bother.

Hell yea you should get it, it doesn?t cost much and is just as fun as the second one. I still play the first one with my girlfriend, its deferentially better co-op but for that price its great value for money, My favourite part of either game is still zed's zombie island :D

There's really no reason. It's funny, sure. But you can just listen to the funny bits on YouTube. Borderlands 2 improved all aspects of the previous title.

GOTY edition for about £15
Yeah go for it, the story is meh but who cares, if you've got a buddy it's a blast and 3/4 of the DLC is brilliant stuff, it's also more playable solo than Borderlands 2 is if you ask me.

For 15 quid it's a hell of a lot of fun shooty good times.

The special powers in the second game all kinda suck if you ask me, or they're overpowered but not in as fun of a way.

My sniper class can go invisble and ninja melee? Great, but I miss my "kill button" that threw an explosion causing bird of prey towards the nearest foe and blew him straight to hell.

I do like the second game but I got bored of it long before seeing the end of it. It helped that I had people to play the first with, my copy of the second got delayed and I didn't have 12 hours a day for it so I fell behind my friends and lost interest.

I've read up on the story and the backstory on wikis so that's not a problem.

Thanks guys I'll take your advice and give it a miss then. I don't know anyone else who plays the first one so co-op isn't really an option.

Just a warning, if you intend to play the first Borderlands with friends you should do it LAN.

Because GameSpy runs the online mode.
