It should definitely be opt-out rather than opt-in in my opinion, certainly in times of shortage.

I think it should be mandatory, yes. It's extremely selfish to hang on to something you're no longer using, especially when it could save somebody's life. I carry a donor card, and it's one of the only things I can say I'm proud of.

Hmm its a tough question. Well i know that many people would/un able to donate citing religious or medical reasons so that would rule them out. But if it was made mandatory you would have I would imagine a substantial population of individuals protesting about the lack of choice and oppossing the concept on moral grounds. Ultimately i believe it should remain voluntary, even though there is not enough volunteers as it is.

However, are you saying that it should be mandatory after death or during life? Call me selfish, but during life I want to keep my organs intact.
... after death. I promise I am not laughing at that.

OT: At the very least, it should be opt-out.

At the least, it should be opt-out. Also, the person should choose, and the family shouldn't be able to over-ride their decision once they are dead.

But mandatory would be better.

No, its still their body. The country, the government, the society, whatever, has no claim to any person's body or organs. Its yours until you die, and if you haven't made your wishes clear its up to your family.

I think a religion banning donating organs is pretty stupid myself, but if they make it clear they don't want it done, there's nothing you can do. Charity is voluntary, you don't owe it innately otherwise it wouldn't be a charitable act.

Anyway, I don't think it should be mandatory, as some people just aren't comfortable with it - which is fair enough I guess. I for one don't want to donate my eyes. Don't ask why; I just find it...weird. Everything else fine, but not my eyes.

No it should not be mandatory. There are many religious and personal reasons not to donate your organs.

Don't most religions espouse helping and assisting your fellow man whenever it is possible. Surely by donating your organs you could save many lives. What kind of God would damn a man for helping his fellow human beings because he no longer has any organs?

My family already knows that I want to have my organs donated when I die, whether for the treatment of people who need them or for use in scientific research.

Hey, its not like I'm gonna need them any more, is it?

lol, fucking win.
Yeah, there are just parts of my body that I don't want to donate. My ears? By all means take them. My nose? Uhh sure... My guy parts? No thanks, you can't have those.

I personally think that when you die, you are not using your organs, so they should be donated.
But its your body. I think you have a say of what goes on with your body no matter how alive or dead you are.
But that raises the question of: "do you own your body?" or "If you do in fact own your body, do you stop owning your body when you die?".
This question was raised in one of my earlier Philosophy classes, and we agreed as a whole that organ donation is intrinsically good, but people should be able to say "no". If they do not say "no", then it is assumed that they have said "yes", and you harvest their balls FOR SCIENCE.

No, because one: Humanity could use a bit of a trimming every now and again.

two: That takes away one's freedom of choice.

three: If the person has some kind of blood disease (aids, ect.) the recipient may get it if the organ is left unchecked.

Four: (more of a personal thing) I don't want to have my organs used to revive some douchebag who is just going to make the world worse. If they're a good person that's okay, but what would I know? I'd be dead.

As far as I'm concerned:

As soon as you're dead your organs are no longer in anyone's possesion. You shouldn't be able to stipulate in your will that you don't want them taken, and your family shouldn't be able to stop anyone taking them.

If you're dead, you are not using them, so denying them to somebody who needs them more than you is not only selfish but also illogical.

However, having said that, while you're alive, anything inside you is yours and its up to you what happens to it.

You'll be dead, you wont need them anymore, there is absolutely no reason to keep what other need to yourselves.

No. I don't want to live somewhere where I have to opt-out of things rather than have the free will and choice to opt-in.

Also, I'm an organ doner, by choice, by opting in myself. Not by being forced and then having to opt-out

I think an opt-out system is best. I don't like the idea of a mandatory system because your body is yours and you should have a say in how your body is treated.

I generally dislike alot of things that are mandatory, and organ donation if made so would be one of them. I cant donate my organs for medicle reasons, even if I wanted to, they would perform the operation. But be forced to do things, even if you are dead, infringes on some kind of freedom.
