Should We See the Duke Again?

Yeah I know, its 'not another post on Duke Nukem Forever' topic.

One thing that I have wondered with this 'game' (I'll use the term loosely until I'm in my home playing it) is the whole premise to which is shown.

To make things rather blunt and to the point, we are dealing with a game that features a macho, womanizing chauvinist shooting, punching and decapitating aliens while having fun doing so. When one says it this way, doesn't it scream "CONTROVERSY AHOY!".

In recent times we have seen change content like in Fallout 3 to get through the classification threshold to the latest Medal of Honor which eventually bowed down due to public pressure. Now comes along a game which seems to have the worst of all worlds in a video game.

In this day of political correctness, where public opinion can just as easily turn into class action law suit, is this really the right time for Duke Nukem to make his comeback? Will we see an uproar of protest when the game hits shelves? Will it never come out due to public actions?

Or more so, should the Duke wait a while until common sense starts to rear its ugly head again to return?

To make things clear on my part I am applauding Gearbox who seem to be remaining true to the franchise. My biggest concern is that the content, nay, the character of the Duke would be drastically changed in order to get passed the whole classification mark and public opinion, so its a relief to see that it certainly is not the case.
I think a game like this needs to come out. Not so much to give the conservatives the finger, but more to shove it in their face and say "this stuff is here and its real, now accept it".

Any thoughts?

ps If this is a had been topic, my apologies.

Should we see the Duke again? OF COURSE.

He's the second manliest thing in the known universe. I'd hate to see THAT go away forever.

Well, due to the fact that I have NEVER played a Duke Nukem game this is basically a new experience for me...

I don't particularly like Duke Nukem, but I'm behind its right to exist.

As for this, it should, logically, encounter these kinds of problems, but it won't. That only happens when a game tries to take itself seriously or EA hires fake protestors.

In the end, people are going to buy this game to spite the culture police.

That is reason enough for me.

It's hedonism, not chauvinism. Men who have lots of sex don't instantly hate women.

If a woman did what he does, she wouldn't be called a feminazi. She'd be a slut. That's an entirely different double standard that can be handled somewhere else.

Ummm... wouldn't the current state of society make this the BEST time for Duke to come out? While everyone else is backing down and hiding from the big scary overlord that is political correctness, Gearbox is showing us we don't need to be afraid, and frankly I hope they fight any action the moral guardians try to take against them.

Poor Duke sure has been receiving a lot of knee-jerk reactions lately.
He was never meant to be taken seriously; hell, his entire gimmick is parodying cheesy-one liners and action cliche's. Even the sexism is corny as hell (the good guy always gets the women).

I'd rather take misogynistic and overtly jackass rather than sit through another Master Chief/Marcus Fenix grunt-a-thon, for the variety if nothing else.

Duke is a throwback, sort of like Slaughterhouse. And LIKE Slaughterhouse, we can all enjoy* that popular culture has sort of come to terms with it, and oh well, we don't care too much.

*Or not enjoy, depending. If we intend to wallow in Duke's testosterone to the detriment of game-play, that'll get old fast. What did Zero Punctuation say? "A childish jelly (as in Jell-O?) binge followed by tedium and diarrhea." Something like that.

Yes. Games these days are sometimes way too fucking serious. Duke Nukem is a great sight for sore eyes. Something where I can enjoy gunning down hundreds of aliens and seeing that my character enjoys it as well.

Here's the thing: Unlike how many people seem to think he is, Duke is a satire. he is not meant to be taken seriously. In fact, he is making fun of the classic stereotype of macho action stars.

Seriously, I don't see why everyone takes it so seriously...

Little off topic, but the only thought I get it of the game when I think about is "I'm going to laugh so much if when that game finally comes out, it's going to be terrible."

Probably less wordy though.

Well I got Duke Nukem 3d of XBLA to try and remind myself of the good old days and found myself wondering why people always say that the early and mid nineties of gaming were the golden years. I lived through them, and believe me, they were not the fucking golden years of gaming. Duke Nukem 3D is an atrocity of a game compared to games made even five years later.

As to the more pressing question, I do think Duke Nukem Forever should come out, partly because every once in a while you have to stop using reasoned arguments against reactionary moral guardians and just stick your fingers up at them and tell them to shove it. DNF seems like a pretty good way to do that. All the hype of fourteen years means that gamers will be up in arms when people try to criticise it, the game they said would never be released finally being released may engender some sort of communal spirit etc. So it would be nice.

Until the whole 'it's better on PC' crowd come back around and make everyone's lives a misery.

You know, I debated that last line so many times, wondering whether to say consoles or PCs, and realised that the flame war has gotten so stupid that you can't even make an idle off hand comment about it. So for anyone who feels like responding to the last line and the last line alone, you good sir are a moron and not worthy of my time.
