Over the past few month's i have been quite intrigued by silent films. I wonder if there is anyone else on the escapist who also enjoys the silent films. By far my favorite silent actor has to be Charlie Chaplin, but not far off from him is Buster Keaton.
So yea, do any of you lot like silent films at all? :)

I dislike them in general, but The Lost World (1925) is a badass freaking film!

Try Harold Lloyd. He's sort of half way between Chaplin and Keaton. The same breathtaking stunts of Keaton but with more of Chaplins character.

If you want some non comedy try the 1927 film about Napoleon truly brilliant. Also have a look at the 1921 version of Nosferatu, one of the best vampire moives ever made.

I've just pre-ordered the "definitive" edition (marketing speak for most complete version available) of Metropolis (Lang 1926) on blu ray with a snazzy metal box and assorted other crap. In my opinion one of the most influential movies ever made, and the final word in scope and spectacle in terms of what could be achieved by silent cinema.

M (Lang 1931) is also a masterful piece of cinema and along with Metropolis I feel stands up today, and deserves an audience outside of cinephiles or viewers who can appreciate films primarily due to their importance in terms of the technical nature of cinema and developments in the medium in terms of communicating ideas.

I also like 'Birth of a Nation' (Griffith 1915), perhaps acknowledge its importance in terms of many aspects of cinema would be a better way of phrasing it?

edit: As pointed out 'Birth of a Nation' isn't a film to recommend.

I'm a huge film buff, and silent films are among some of my favorite movies. Stuff like "The Penalty" and "Die Nibelungen" are just fantastic. Lon Chaney is probably my favorite star from that era, along with Rudolph Klein-Rogge.(I believe that's how his name is spelt).

You've never heard of Lon Chaney? That's like saying you've never heard of Clara Bow, or Fay Wray, or John Barrymore. Lon Chaney was a superstar of his era! Check YouTube, you're bound to find a couple of his films there.

I have a few of charlie chaplain's series' on video, and I quite enjoy them. My favorite is still the one where he's a criminal on the run, and escapes the cops by a)hiding in the sand and b) hiding at a party.

I'm also familiar with Buster Keaton, but the only one of his work I've seen is the Sherlock Holmes parody.

For a change of pace, my favorite silent film is 'A Page of Madness.'

Edit: Oh, also 'La passion de Jeanne d'Arc' of course.

Check out Chaplin's 'City Lights' if you haven't by the way.

Thanks for the info :) i wouldn't of known otherwise!

When checking out Lon Chaney remember to have senor next to the name or you'll get him mixed up with his son.

BTW L.C. Sn was famous for "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "The Phantom of the Opera".

I have been a fan of silent movies since I was about three years old and saw THIS on TV:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsyRhRR5Iu4

It's from Steamboat Bill Jr. (1928), starring Buster Keaton. Changed my life.

Oh yeah, if you REALLY want to see what could be accomplished without fancy technology like sound and computer graphics, I strongly recommend that you check out Fritz Lang's 1926 masterpiece, Metropolis! (Especially since the majority of once - missing scenes have recently been found!)
