We remember those games of old, the ones you played after getting home from gradeschool. If you grew up in the 8-bit age or with the N64 and PS1, you know what kind of games I'm talking about. I found my old Nintendo 64, plugged in a cartridge, and fired it up. The familiar intro fires up, and I started playing, when it suddenly dawned on me. THIS. GAME. IS. SHIT! The gameplay feels so poor, and all of your cherished childhood memories come crashing down. For me, these included Gex and Hot Wheels Turbo Racing. What about you guys? Any similar sob stories?

I downloaded the first Crash Bandicoot game from PSN hoping to waddle my feet in nostalgia.

The fucking game was almost unplayable.

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the Gamecube. I don't know why I loved it so much when I was a kid... Even more so with Tonic Trouble, and old N64 game. It was terrible, but for some reason, I couldn't get enough of it as a kid...

Nope, Sonic 2 and Super Mario World are just as great as the day I just got them.
Same with Paper Mario, Zelda OOT and to a lesser degree Mario 64

I generally had good taste when I was younger

Pick any 3D console shooter from before dual-analog controllers. There you go. As awesome as Goldeneye was back in the day, it's unplayable shit now. Same with Perfect Dark and Jet Force Gemini.

Thankfully there are others, like Mario and Mischief Makers, that have aged very well, though.

Having exclusively played Crash Bandicoot and Spyro games, I can look back on those old games with pride. The gameplay still stands up.

THAT GAME! Gah, I remember getting it for christmas and then feeling ashamed because I couldn't accept actually owning it. But then again, I never thought it was a particularly good game.

The only games I played as a small child were the classics on the N64; Goldeneye, Legend of Zelda, Perfect Dark, Mario party, etc. And I kept with that when I got my gamecube too.

There is a reason you don't pick up games from your childhood. Reality will come and crush the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia.

No it's not. It is a sort of archaic 3D, but it still plays fine.

GoldenEye really dissapointed me for the lack of a second analogue stick and all. I got really frustrated, but I kept on playing and some time later had a good old couch match against a few friends and it still held up. The controls were still pretty harsh, but the deathmatches with proximity mines and throwing knives were still great.

This isn't all that old, but I remember putting hours and hours into Freedom Fighters for the PS2. Saw it pre-owned in Game a few weeks ago and... Wow is it awful.

Not really Yoshi's Island for the SNES and Super Mario World are both still great timesinks.

Actually, scratch that. Equinox for the SNES was a game I'd spent months slowly beating, and it's bloody terrible. XD

Where do you live that has pre-owned copies of Freedom Fighters? I haven't been able to find that in ages.

Anyways, only one I can think of is Driver 2. As much fun as I had with it when I was younger, the newer generations of games have spoiled me, and I simply can't play it anymore.

Newcastle. I see it all the time, £10 or less.
