I'm one of those people that don't have money for games because they have to eat, so I was glad that Team Fortress 2 became free and I could finally enjoy the great game. After downloading it (a few hours after it was announced) I went ahead and played the crap out of it. IT. WAS. AWESOME.

Let me just say that I had loads and loads of fun! People already were moaning and complaining on the forums (steam and the escapist) that those like me would ruin the game, and I ignored them completely. I always play by the rules, I try to get the checkpoint, I try to heal my teammates, I always build turrets where they have to be built. And, because my experience was so good, I obviously didn't believe that the game would be broken just because people wanted to play for free.

I've enjoyed the game a week, everything was perfect. People played normally, there were many "new guys" that I could notice (Even if I don't have money for games, I still played years of Counter-Strike, Call of Duty 2 and other games, so I have more experience then some people, even if I am not that great).

I then left for the countryside where there is no internet, and returned last week. Since I had some free time I decided to play a game of TF2! "I haven't played in a while I said". I chose my favorite gamemode which happens to be King of the Hill and started playing. I switched 3-4 server until I just had enough.

Everyone was playing for themselves, no one even thinking that it's a damn TEAM DEATHMATCH game! I was the only one, THE ONLY ONE! of my team that was going after the checkpoint! The others were winning because they had 3 guys that were after the checkpoint! Even if on the other servers I wasn't the only one doing it, at least 2/3 of the team was faffing about killing people far away from the checkpoint. On one server there were people spawn camping! SPAWN CAMPING? IN TF2? I actually shouted at one point "Guys lets go to the checkpoint!"...I was actually told to "shut up noob".

I left Counter Strike because of this...because of the "SHUT UP N00B LOL FAG!", "STOP SNIPING ME GAY ASSHOLE" and the likes...Now I don't ask of the people that play TF2 to be really kind to me and say "may I" and "thank you" before and after shooting me point blank in the face...but I really don't need to be called a fag/asshole/and the likes in my one day of when I can enjoy a game for 2 hours!

I ask of the community here which seems to enjoy Valve games more than others and at the same time is filled with many nice persons: (TL;DR here) Do you think that people migrating from CoD / Counter-Strike or other FPSs ruined/drastically changed TF2?

[small]I'm not saying you guys have the same experience as me, maybe I am just unlucky today...I actually hope you guys are having fun and I am just being pretentious...also if you know nice servers from Europe(ping!) please feel free to post them, I think I'll join the Escapist Server more from now on...[/small]

Nope. As a matter of fact the new players help out with the server numbers. I've never played an online fps were your above experience wasn't a problem, though.

I haven't had that experience since starting out - generally speaking, people are really friendly as long as you A) try to play the objective, B) don't run a class too many people are running, and C) play medic once in a while. And teamplay tends to be a thing just because of how the maps and classes are set up.

Back when i joined in 2007 TF2 was a simple place, when men were men and spies were spies.
Now stay off my lawn![/old man voice]

Games like COD seem to encourage going single, while BF and Coop games tend to require atleast 1 person of each type.TF2 is no stranger to jerks, but mostly everybody stays shut because they are concentrating on the game. There's also a feeling that you aren't trying to do the objectives, you are trying to push on and keep killing enemies.

You should find a server that you like, and stick with it. I too have had spats of bad luck with servers full of assholes, morons, and scrubs.

But then I found Fugworld, and I've been happy ever since.

I, for one, always try to be polite, and play with the team.

Calling "n00b" because someone tries to get some team action going in a team-based game mode sounds like the one shouting is the noob.

I've had the odd "wow you guys are gay, stop killing me" on my usual servers i regularly play on, but they usually end up getting kicked because of it, or just end up shutting up and leaving. Over all nothing has really changed other then server numbers being up.

Sadly, COD players are going to be playing the game and saying that it's shit. Which is what COD players who arn't playing Call Of Duty are doing.

This is a completly different game and they won't go far without team work.

I'm F2P as well, and while I can't say they changed the game, I have a hard time believing teams before had an average of 3-4 crappy spies and 0 medics(or a medic that helped the team rather than hid behind the Heavy).

I will admit that getting killed a lot is frustrating, but I think the real problem with the people you mentioned is that they take the game too seriously and kills too personally. I've been lucky enough to be thrown into servers full of nice people so far. I am of the opinion that people are more likely to be polite if surrounded by polite people.

ah, I remember the days of playing Modern Warfare online with shrieky kids yelling swears and my nickname subsequently in otherwise incomprehensible sentences everytime I managed to kill them (after the brat had shot me dead about 20 times in a row). That's why I stick with singleplayer games.

That said, I did play a bit of Team fortress 2 some time ago. It was a fun game and the community seemed rather friendly. Even if I was doing something wrong, they would point it out in a polite manner.
I played the game once since it went free and I didn't really get to enjoy much of it. First of all, the game had underwent an enormous makeover since I last played it. It was confusing. Second, the servers didn't run very well at the time.
I really hope that the theories about newcomers ruining the game will stay unconfirmed. I'd like to play some more one day.

Find some good servers and favourite them. In my thousand hours of playing TF2 I've only come across 2 servers like the one you've talked about.

I play with my very experienced friends, together we take up about half a team, so it's not much of an issue for me... then again, I have such horrible lag on my laptop that I lose connection from half of the games we join, so yeah...

Find some good servers, favorite them, and play. Those kinds of people have always been around TF2, and can be easily avoided if you try.

In the past when I've played TF2 I've been kicked for something as silly as completing the objective. I shit you not, playing Scout I scored the intelligence several times running, but apparently I was interrupting them blowing the shit out of each other. Even my own team was berating me for winning...

I've pretty much found a few servers with some cool people on and stuck to them.

I don't think that the influx of new players has really harmed the game. In fact, it has boosted it with fresh blood. While a few vocal members of the community will complain about F2P players, on a whole, they help grow the player base by bringing in new ideas and tactics. Granted, some of them doesn't work very well in TF2, but it will be interesting to see how they adapt.

Your problem in KotH I think isn't the players, but a failing on the map you may have been on. To be honest it is very easy for fighting to move away from the control point on some king of the hill maps in TF2. Next thing you know, the announcer starts counting down the last few seconds of the match.

Nucleus is by far the worst example of this. Because most of the fighting is around the edge of the map, not many will go for the point unless motivated by teammates. This unwillingness to go for the point is made worse by a general lack of cover on the point and the map often turning into a shooting gallery for snipers.

KotH_Sawmill sometimes has a similar problem because fighting can move away from the control point very easily. But, it isn't nearly as bad is Nucleus.

I haven't noticed. Though there have been some new particularly easy kills.

I just have 2 clans whose server I frequent that I full of cool doods.

That's not saying I don't play other servers, but 4 out of 5 times, I'm on one of their servers.

I have to say no.
Tho i play with friends mostly, so teamwork is always on, so to speak. One of us picks a medic, the other one's a Heavy.
If the team needs a teleporter, someone goes Engi and builds it. And name-calling happens in every online game. But i haven't seen it in TF2 much.

Dont just sit there, block them, block the server if you dont want to end up somewhere start filtering or start blocking. If i were you i would have trolololed the 'shut up noob' kid all the way to hell.
