My mom's birthday is coming up next month, and my dad suggested a low cut, ceramic trivet to replace one that broke a while back. Just for reference, as far as trivet's go, what counts as low cut?

Why would you ask that here rather than just look it up? I don't even know what a trivet is, but one quick search can tell me everything I need to know.

There, looks like they start round $21.50.

Well, the Escapist forums have been a pretty good source of feedback, so I figured why not?

Like this link, thanks for the link.

But you could easily get your answer from a quick Google search, so it seems like a bit of a wasted thread.

Not to mention you didn't explain what a trivet is, provide pictures or flesh out the OP to where it'd be worth responding to. So yea, just not well done or necessary.

Why would he need to explain what a trivet is? If someone doesn't already know what he's talking about how would they what counts as "low cut"? He was asking for "size range" not "price range"

OP: I don't know anything about trivets, but did you ask your dad, since he was the one who suggested it?

Because Ideally forum threads here are supposed to be places of discussion and not questions one would ask on Wikihow. Besides, if it were explained, maybe people who aren't familiar with what a trivet is can familiarize themselves and contribute to the discussion.

And yes, I know he asked about size range, but I wanted to be helpful nonetheless.

An actual discussion about trivets? I think this is getting a little too divorced from reality.

Incidentally, I just looked up "low cut trivet" up on Google and this thread is actually the top result. That said, I'm not sure why a gaming forum would have the obscure answers he's looking for. Maybe some sort of cooking subreddit would better place to ask.

We live in a world where Boglinwatch 2017 is a thing, there's no such thing as too divorced from reality. But I'm glad we agree about this not being the best place to ask such a question. And in my book that's one more reason to take my business over to Bing, Google has failed us.

Huh. So THAT'S what those things are called! Interesting.

But why ceramic? Why not something like cast iron?

As I understand it, it's because of heat transference. Making them out of metal would cause the heat of the pot/kettle/etc. to be transferred down to the counter, possibly scorching it. Ceramic trivets (and I never knew that's what they were called either), don't do that.

We never used them around our house. Mom always favored these thick, woven mat-like things to do the job.

Wet cast iron and real wood worktops are a bad combo - causes tannin staining (in oak at least, though as I understand it, everything does).
