I'm so sick and tired of the bullshit media's portrayal that ALL skinheads are racist. BULLSHIT I SAY. The movement began back in the 1960's among white kids in response to how much they LOVED Jamaican music. "Loved". Ska, Reggae, Rocksteady...ALL music created and performed primarily by blacks. The first wave of skinheads were completely un-racist. And then Suede-heads and the like came after. It wasn't until the 1980's and the formation of the National Front in England that being a skinhead became synonymous with racism and white pride. Fuck the National Front. They screwed up everything. Then stupid American racists adopted the ideals, and since the skinhead movement originally started in England and not America, the only impression regular Americans ever get of it (usually) is that of racism. It sucks. There is even a movement of SHARPS (Skinheads Against racial Prejudice) thats been started to combat these perceptions. Its so Infuriating. Having to be worried about being considered a racist when you are basically the complete opposite. There are the neo-nazi fags, and then there are Traditional skins, Sharps, and the rest. I just feel the need to make it known that THERE IS A DIFFERENCE, and a rather significant one at that.

I don't think all skinheads have been portrayed this way since the 80's when they were 'all' football hooligans and nazis.

Well, national geographic covered the "culture" and failed to mention its origins and focused almost solely on the racist sub-culture. Also, for years here in the U.S. you'd see some dumbass nazi fuck on the Springer show being a douche and preaching his crap. The News is guilty too, but what aren't they guilty of?

Its a ***** man, it sucks. As a suede-head (former traditional skin) it bites just knowing that 98% of the people that interact with you are dicks because they think you are a racist.

It is the nature of evil to blossom from within an unwitting host. Communism was corrupted by materialist dictators, Democracy by pedagogical plutocrats, Anarchy (No Leaders) succumbed to an image synonymous with Chaos, the Muslim faith sprouted all these wierd-ass suicidal zealots, Christianity begat inquisitions...

The lesson? 'The price of freedom is eternal vigilance' and not just regarding people OUTSIDE your own circles...

Ever seen the film This Is England that does a good job of showing what real true skinheads are and also showing those who are just racist thugs

Thats a really good point and emphasizes the necessity of groups like the SHARPS, its unfortunate that they are needed, but they are.

I agree with you there, its just very stereo-typical, but in todays society, what isnt? Plus i dont really like the Skin Head look myself, but your right, did assume straight away that skin heads are racist etc.

Bold statement.
I watched the manchester city match yesterday at the ground with a pint and had no inclination to bottle any away supporters. Come Tuesday I'm coming down to Leeds to watch the skatalites my favourite ska band play for possibly one of the last occasions in the uk with the remaining members of the band.

You can't judge people by the way the look! One of my best friends is nicknamed "Scally Dave". He is the chaviest dresser you have ever seen listens to hardcore music and has some very seedy friends. However Dave is one of the nicest people I know and when we became mates over a shared intrest I didnt manage too look past his clothes and demeener because it was never an issue.

You can't tar everone with the same brush!

No I saw Fulham vs Man City yesterday and I'm of seeing skatalites on Tuesday this week. I was trying lol to get escapists to come down to a retro game night in Manchester on tues then I found out abaout the gig and immediatly booked tickets. I love my 60-70's ska and tracks like freedom sound, big trombone, guns (obviously) of naverone live are going to blow me away. Three of the original line up are still playing

Lester Stirling
Doreen Shaffer
lloyd Knibb

Another band to tick of my list of -Bands to see before you die. You big into the ska then?

Duh. Listening to Judge Dread right now. But yeah, Aggrolites, Prince Buster, Laurel Aitken, Alton Ellis, etc. Some newer bands too, although I gotta say after the 90's re-vamp of the scene things really never regained focus. You have alot of bands with ska "elements" but lack the root traits, or an overall sound.

Hurrah for the big 6/8 of judge dread! I mainly listen to Augustus pablo, dynomites, heptones, maytals, count oussie. I love the emotion and the upbeat tempos. Is the melodica not one of the maddist instruments ever? Newer ska doesn't really appeal to me in the same way punk rock doesn't to 70's punk. I havn't heard any modern ska that can compare to the affore mentioned, and if someone mentions the mighty mighty bosstones I'll scream lol

Here in Quebec it's not so bad. I used to grow my hair long, then shave it skinhead style.

Oi I am a Skinhead and I hate those nazi boneheads and how the media portrays all skins like that. I have been asked if I was a nazi by some hispanic kids I told them no and they completly accepted it, but the white kids still call me nazi whenever they get a chance even tho I have explained it to them. Life as a skinhead is not easy.

Oddly enough here's what I associate skinheads with:
Anti-Racist Action
SHARP
Redskins (Communist skinheads)
Anarchists
Anti-fascist Pro-working class
Antifa
Oi! Punk Bands

Of course, in America they're only associated with neo-nazis or non racist nationalist right wingers who think America can do no wrong and liberals and communists have ruined America.

I actually did see that, good movie although they were a bit hard to understand with their extremley thick accents (I'm american). The part where

The leader of the group kills his black friend for apparently no reason then cries about it.

was really strange, I think I missed his motivation behind that.

OP: Why do you have to be a part of a group to like Reggae/Ska/anything? I never understood why people feel they all have to dress and act a certain way because they have a common interest.
