Ok, so I finally played skyrim. "Its the best game ever" they said. I've played, back in the day, quake, and doom. I also happened to have played 'heretic', which is basically the same game but with magic. My question is this: Skyrim seemed a lot like bioshock to me, which in turn isnt all THAT different from another fps; isnt skyrim just call of duty for fantasy guys? I mean, obviously the content cant be compared but gameplay...its pretty much a shooter to me when it comes down to it. Thoughts?

Well...

Imagine I came up to you. I have a pear in one hand, and a loaf of bread in the other. I tell you that as far as I can tell, there is little functional difference between the loaf of bread and the pear, and that they both taste the same and serve the same purpose as far as meal preparation goes. I then ask you for you thoughts.

What thoughts could you possibly give me, at that point?

It's in a first person perspective. But a game that is, if anything, too unfocused and free-roaming is about as different from a tightly scripted corridor shooter as both Skyrim and CoD are from Minecraft.

Pretty much what I was going to say, the only thing similar is that they are both in first person view.

I thought you'd love Skyrim, since you are actually a character in it!

Come on, Skyrim has virtually nothing in common with COD, apart from it's a videogame.
Also, why would Skyrim being a fantasy style Call of Duty be a bad thing, COD's a lot of fun. Isn't that, you know, the point of playing games?

I suppose...
Because you can "fire" in both games

But if you do accept this as a similarity, then you would definitely have problems distinguishing between somebody being fired from work (terminating an employment contract) and being fired at while at work (being shot at with a gun). I see no other similarities between the two you can use to say they are the same game.

WTF is this? Can you really not tell the difference between a linear corridor based first person shooter and a open world fantasy RPG?

Nope must be trolling.

That's... That's... Beautiful! Ingenious! More poetic adjectives! And clearly worded too. Plus, you were first.

I lol'd.

OT: The only shooter qualities it has are bows and magic. The bow and arrow is hardly like shooting a semi-automatic rifle (much less an automatic one) at enemies who die in as little as one blow.

While magic, having been so incredibly nerfed that it's best used as a supplement to smashing things with swords, clubs, axes, fists, etc. barely qualifies as long range combat at all in my opinion.

Honestly, on my battle-mage character, I often find myself using expert level destruction spells in close range in order to do a little extra damage between sword swings and make things more interesting. This is both a testament to how badly magic has been nerfed in Skyrim, and how little it gets used in ranged combat (at least in my case).

So, in essence: Running around a huge open world, completing quests for hundreds of unique NPCs and killing random bad guys =/= running around a small map shooting other people with guns and high explosives.

Not that I don't like shooters, I just don't see the correlation.

Following this logic.

Masturbation and gaming are alike. I sit on my arse and use my hands to do both.

Just.... no. No no no no.... no. The only features they share, are being on all major systems, and being first person. But even then, many people choose to travel in 3rd person. I do whenever im not in combat.

Thats like saying a Baguette and a Doughnut are the same thing because they are breads. They are nothing a like, other then the fact they are breads.

In short, no, they are nothing alike, and Skyrim isnt just "CoD for Fantasy Buffs". I know a dozen people who couldnt care about High Fantasy settings, but still enjoy Skyrim. And i know people who hate brown and grey shooters, but still play CoD.

I mean, just to begin with, Skyrim and Bioshock are nothing alike, unless you consider the fact that they both involve fire and lightening attacks. >.>; Just..... you know what? Please tell me im just getting trolled. It would make things that much easier for me to comprehend. I would rather be trolled, and have fallen for it, then believe someone out there thinks Skyrim is just CoD for High Fantasy players.

You can play the game in 3rd person, I do with everything but archery and destruction.

But the game is so much more than any other FPS. Get out of the first cave and you will sing songs of freedom and make friends with a random arse pine tree.

Guys, I figured it out!

Look at this:

Using a bow in first person

Shooting fire in first person

using a bow in first person

Shooting fire in first person

Don't you see - they are clearly the same game. And since Dark Messiah uses the Source engine, and Half-Life 2 also uses the source engine - Skyrim is clearly related to HL2.

But wait, there is more. Day of Defeat is a mod for HL that portrays soldiers in WW2. And this is the exact same as Call of Duty!

Oh my god, it all makes sense now! TC was correct. Skyrim is Call of Duty.

Woah, wait what?

You can't go around just sayin' things like that!

The only way you can compare Skyrim with call of duty is by the fact that they are both VIDEO GAMES. There is literally no other way to link the two. Different genre, different style of play, different game world, different narative delivery method, different gameplay mechanics... etc

You guys, he isn't saying that the GAMES are similar, he's saying they occupy the analogous place in the two demographics.
He's still clearly insane/trolling, but the assertion that skyrim is MW3 for RPG nerds isn't far wrong. And, the assertion that skyrim and bioshock have similarities is also fairly astute. The easiest way to go through both games is with a melee weapon, and you cast magic from your hand.
the difference is, Call of Duty/Battlefield games were NEVER fun. But Skyrim is.

So yes, you are playing a game that is heavily first person view and has the same assigned murder button as several other games. But by that logic, Twilight Princess and Super Smash Brothers are the same.

Ah, I very much enjoy troll/troll thread images and this was the perfect opportunity to post one.

But as for your post,...mmmmmm, no. They are not the same thing. One is a linear testosterone kill-fest, the other is an enriched open-world fantasy RPG that allows me to marry a lizard person (DON'T JUDGE ME!). The only real similarity is that both games are in a first-person view, which you don't have to stay in constantly while playing Skyrim. When I am out of combat, I am in third-person view.

Other reasons why have already been explained by the other Escapists. Most of posts far better than my own. lol
