Skyrim Multiplayer

*EDIT* (I think Multiplayer is giving the wrong impression..... I think, the term, co-op might be better).
Now before you have me drawn and quartered, I don't mean an elder scrolls mmo (though if they did do an mmo, I reckon they should do one all across tamriel.... how they'd make that beast, I can't fathom...).

No, what I mean is Skyrim but with a few friends to do quests with, or just faff around.
So it could be done over xbox live (and the formats versions of long distance multiplayer) and your friend(s) could load up one of their characters and join you with certain quests/dragon slaying/townsfolk slaying/mudcrab slaying/you get my drift.
With it being it being optional and those who want to play with friends can, and those who want to ride solo, can still do so.

Plus, you could turn on each other too, just to see who would win and such!

Anywho, what's your opinion on this, Escapists?

*EDIT*
I don't mean, "BIG, IN-YOUR-FACE PLAY ME!" Multiplayer. Just optional co-op for those who are interested. Y'know, for fun (or if you can't finish a quest and wouldn't mind a hand). Have a laugh with friends, while questing, etc.

NO.

Seriously, stop trying to staple multiplayer to everything. You only mangle the whole "You Are The Dragonborn" thing, and draw money away from the singleplayer.

Bethesda doesn't NEED less money in the singleplayer, it's buggy enough.

Also, respawn. I don't LIKE respawning.

The Elder Scrolls series is one of those games where it needs to stay single player. I can't see a multiplayer or co-op option working out all that well.

If they did it, they would have to do it so right that the lord God himself[sic] would magically impregnate another pointless human being so to spawn yet another representitive of him merely to play it.

And the technology, interest, effort and money just aren't there.

Give it until your children are old enough to stab eachother.

I'd rather not see that, or if so in a strictly coop-oriented, non-supported, not-balanced-for way (ie: "here's your internet-ports, here's the required console commands to connect to an IP, have fun but don't come asking for help")

There are several issues with MP in elder scrolls games (apart from that having been tossed around ever since Daggerfall IIRC, but Morrowind for sure). The sandboxy nature, complete with dozens of ways to get stupidly overpowered - if you so chose - lends itself badly to multiplayer, especially the competitive kind.

While we don't have to deal* with make-your-own-spell lego kits in skyrim (at least for now); thinks like slow-motion on archery-zoom or block-while-power-attacked would mess with the synching required for MP, concurrent & synched object tracking over the vast distances wouldn't be possible (ever notice how all MMO/MP ranged things are really short range?), or at least not practical, etcetc..

I'm not saying i wouldn't have great fun loading up a co-op run with a pal, i just think it would hurt the gamedesign we all expect from TES games.

*) That sounds as if i didn't like it, which isn't true. In this case however it would be something problematic when juxtaposed to the proposed MP, hence "having to deal with it" being a problem.

--

So, as a statement for the protocol - just in case Beth is doing a market study via reading random forum comments: Multiplayer would not make it more probable that i'd buy a TES game, to the contrary, the required changes in game design would very probably make it less likely.

I actually played Fallout 3 with a multiplayer mod. It was difficult to set up, only worked once, caused serious software issues and crashed the game after a couple hours. BUT it was quite fun and that's what counts.
I would love if i could spawn in a buddy to do quests with me. It would break the balance of the game, but again fun is what counts.

No. Fucking. Way.

The Elder Scrolls series always has been and always should stay single player. It doesn't need multiplayer and it never will need multiplayer.

Considering the story of The Elder Scrolls series always revolves around a certain person. In Morrowind it was the Nerevarine, in Oblivion it was The Hero of Kvatch and in Skyrim it's Dovahkiin. It would be kind of silly, for example, say in Skyrim.

"I am Dovahkiin, Dragonborn!... and this is my friend Eugene, who is also a Dovahkiin like me! (until he takes an arrow in the knee)."

It would take away the feel of being the hero that everyone is relying on to save the day.

Would that be like the Borderlands dueling mode that you can activate in-game?

I see an army of trolls, (no not the frost kind) invading Skyrim, killing all in its path. For the LULZ.

The amount of time and effort required to stop them and prevent it from ever happening would seriously cut into Bethesda's bug and glitch hunting efforts, a much more worthy goal.

Yeah! A bit like Fable 3's (so choosing one of your own save characters), but just without it being, y'know, Fable 3.

Sure it's fun when you think about it, but in reality it would be an unplayable mess. One player would have to tag along everywhere. Do you really wanna just sit there while your friend grinds his smithing skill?

I agree with you, if you mean a Red Dead Redemption style multiplayer, with loads of other players.

However, what I'm getting at is inviting a few people on (so people wont just come on and mess your stuff up).

Lose 1d20 sanity points.
Look if you really want it, I'm sure somebody will make a mod for that so you can try you're luck there but let Bethesda focus on what's important, the single player.

Many, many variables for Bethesda to think of instead of working to ensure the single player is as enjoyable as can be?

No thanks.

why do people want MP with everything?
co-op might be understandable but how are you going to incorporate the whole "you are the chosen one" stuff, menu,s and stuff like that?

I think it'd be a good optional thing for those who want it. Maybe make a special version of the game for it or an extra DLC or something
I can think of several quests in Skyrim and Oblivion that would have been way easier/more fun to complete with a partner

OP, I don't know if it's been made clear yet, but that would pretty much amount to heresy ><

(also, SHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Don't say things like: "TES:MMO" or "Multiplayer" Bethesda might be listening, and the industry doesn't need anymore bad ideas right now, so don't go giving them any! lol)

One big issue with multiplayer games is the respawn mechanic that won't transition well to an TES (The Elder Scrolls) game. Every TES game I played *never* mentioned anything about resurrection or respawning anywhere in the game. If you died, you reloaded your game. This is true even for the NPCs in the TES games. Sure they're just brainless 1s and 0s, but they stay dead, even the named ones. Multiplayer games require respawning so players can get back into the game after dying and play with their friends--Terraria, Borderlands, and Fable 3 are good examples of this.

Another issue is the narrative will take a dive if TES went multiplayer. Sure the story is pretty non-existent in a TES game but any narrative for a game is instantly ignored when you are gaming with your buddies (See Yahtzee's review on "Fear 3" for a good example). Immersion is difficult to create in a multiplayer game when you got your friend--either next to you or over Xbox Live--joking about how much of a dick Ulfric is. And it would be hard to appreciate the stories with your friends if there is a troll that kills off the story-important NPCs.

I think there could be a TES multiplayer game--but only a spin-off to the main game. But, you'd basically be making WoW or Fable 3 if you were to do that.

Companions get in the way in combat as it is. Me and a friend racing to get the killing blow is not going to make combat nice.
