So I was thinking of purchasing either Skyrim or Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, mainly because I have a craving for heroic/fantasy that hasn't been fufilled in a while

My favourite fantasy-RPG serie been Dragon Age, mostly because of the storyline and characters.

I did play oblivion, but didn't enjoy it because I thought the game lacked depth, I'm really considering Skyrim cause of the very postive buzz around it.

Haven't played Amalur, but from what I hear it's better in the main story+combat depatment.
Skyrim is apparently better in the open world cave exploring stuff. Plus, mods for PC.

Dunno what you have, so I'll assume you have an Xbox 360. Get Skryim, then shell out a little more for Dawnguard, if you desire.

If you have a gaming PC, then Skyrim is a no-brainer. Mod the hell out of it afterward.

Well, neither of the two games is the same as Dragon Age, at least in terms of gameplay. KOA is the closer one, though. Also in terms of a setting. It's pretty much set in Blandy McBlandstandardfantasyland, while Skyrim deviates at least slightly.

Out of the two, I'd personally prefer Skyrim, however, I would suggest Kingdoms of Amalur to you - I think you'd enjoy it more.

When it comes to which game is better, go for the one that was game of the year and not the one where there's an online pass for an offline game.

You enjoyed Dragon Age: Oranges' storyline and characters? Err... neither Skyrim nor KoA has those...

Skyrim, I think Amalur has literally no challenge at all. Whereas Skyrim has some (unless you play stealth/archer type)

You really have to ask? Skyrim all the way. I haven't played KoA:R but I know that Skyrim has way more content and I am willing to bet it is more fun. I have logged in about 300 hours into Skyrim.

I have a ps3 so i had more fun with Amalur, but Skyrim was still a great game. Plus, it has a lot better art direction and i liked the "WoW-ness" of it.

Also, don't ask people which one you should get. You are only going to get their opinions. Watch a couple of LP's on Youtube, and see if you like it.

Well... you might be able to get both? KoA might be cheap enough second hand at this point maybe. I really enjoyed Skyrim (as does most everyone who's played it) cos there's just a little bit for everyone.

I didn't like KoA:R, it felt... dated. Skyrim is the much better choice if you're looking for an open world self directed fantasy adventure. I didn't even think the combat was that terrific in KoA:R.

To be clear I am on the XBOX360
In that case I would probably not pick Skyrim. Skyrim is good but it's really best if played on the PC because of all the various mods. Also Skyrim's PC requirements are surprisingly low so you might want to double check to see if you can't play it. There's still a ton to do in the vanilla game but the PC version is only going to improve as time goes on so waiting is not a bad idea.

They both have their strong and weak points. Skyrim has a beautiful and open game world where every nook and cranny have interesting things and the villages and towns all feel very alive and lived in, with unique NPC's who you'll come to love or hate. But Skyrim falls flat on the combat and general gameplay. Amalur has a great combat system, possibly the best ever in a WRPG, tons of interesting spells and weapons, and much more variety in the enemies. But Amalur also has the feeling sometimes of being too "WoW-ish", where you feel like you're just running around doing a bunch of boring quests for boring people, whereas in Skyrim, the fetch questing takes a sideline to exploration. I can't even remember any names of story characters in Amalur. I would go for Skyrim, but take a serious look at Amalur as well.
