Skyrim puts Dragon Age to shame

I don't know whether to laugh or cry over the fact that Dragon Age 2 was released the same year as Skyrim. After defeating my first dragon in an epic battle, I realized just how deeply Bethesda has humiliated Bioware. Think back on your experience in Dragon Age 2 and compare and contrast with Skyrim. The Dragon Age team needs to step up their game.

Discuss!

You should change your title a little, add "2" after Dragon Age. Nearly EVERYONE feels that Dragon Age 2 was an inferior game to the original. Especially me since I paid for ANOTHER Archer and didn't even get the achievements for using him OR enjoy his personality/story whatsoever.

OT: Dragon Age is just a name, dragons are pretty rare in that world and they are tough to kill. I'm thankful we didn't have to fight them more than a half-dozen times at most, they were some of the hardest battles the first time through.

My answer is: laugh. A deep, hearty, belly laugh, in fact. I'd gladly compare, but I'd be here forever. Even so, my understanding is that versus threads are frowned upon.

Well, Dragon Age 2 was completely and utterly rushed by EA, where Bethesda had more than 7-10 months to make a game.
Dragon Age: Origins blows Skyrim out of the water, but 2 isn't as good as Skyrim.

They're both fantasy games with dragons. That's like saying you weren't aware CoD and BF were competing.
Just because they both have dragons doesn't mean that they are competing with each other. I guess that Skyrim is competing with Spyro the Dragon then?

Skyrim definately has more dragons thats for sure. Maybe they should make Bioware change the title to "Copy-pasted Dungeon Age" or "The Next 16 Waves of Enemies Age" or "There Are Only 2 Dragons in this Age Age".

Oh wait, I just figured out why its called Dragon Age instead of Dragon's Age... Because there's only 1 Dragon in each game. ba dum tish

I'm a fan of DA2 and even I have to say that a great deal of fantasy games put it to shame. If only it weren't rushed, it would have been so much better *long sigh*

Oh look, it's this thread again x2

1 x "Herp derp, I hayte Dragun Age 2!"

1 x "Herf, Skyrim is da bestest game evar"

Nobody gives a shit, least of all Bioware or Bethesda, about your fanboy rhetoric. I mean, what exactly was your purpose in posting this thread other than to garner a few pages of "OH YEAH MAN I TOTUALLY AGREE!!1! SKYRIM IZ BETTER DAN DRAGON AGE 2"? Two worlds 2 released this year as well, as did The Witcher 2, How about picking a comparison that isn't so blatantly one sided and chosen for nothing more than easy fanboy points?

Better yet, choose a topic that has even the smallest amount of discussion value, that isn't just nerd-dick waving about which Medieval Fantasy based RPG you like pretending you're part of the most.

Not by comparison to Dragon Age but I've been pretty underwhelmed with Skyrim thus far. I loved morrowind and oblivion was a good step up from that. But skyrim to me, isn't half the game it should have been...

As it stands, I've enjoyed the Dragon Age games more. They actually have stories, characters (real characters not cardboard cut out npc's) and generally give more of a reason to care about your own character. I really wanted bethesda to pull through on this one and break the mold for epic fantasy rpgs in the same way Mass Effect did for sci-fi rpgs.

Shame really..

Granted there was a large gap between releases. But the games are going to be compared.

Having played neither I can't put forth an argument. But if DAII was anything like the fist, well. Let's just say I'm not rushing out to get it.
In terms of gameplay, the games are not the same. Skyrim is played primarily from first person and hack and slash places a lot of emphasis on blocking and timing for the best critical attacks. Dragon Age is party based where team management and attack queues form the basis of the combat mechanics.

Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 are both "shoot people from first person with emphasis on high speed encounters that play out in a matter of seconds." They have much more in common than Skyrim and Dragon Age do. Being in the same genre doesn't automatically place two products in competition.

Also, I was trying to avoid any of the oncoming Dragon Age bashing that this thread will no doubt inspire. Yes, I was disappointed by DA2 as well, but I'm over it now.

No one with two brain cells to rub together would make the comparison, especially not in the sense of combat, and especially not in the sense of tactical, party-based, pseudo-turn-based combat versus real-time combat.

Origins came out in late 2009, DA2 came out in 2011, work on DA2 was begun before Origins was completed. Not that a few months over a year is enough time, but saying its 7-10 is giving them way too much absolution.

The project leads shoulder the blame too. Especially when you look at some of the comments they've made in the forums (the lead writer makes me want to hurt myself), and post-release interviews they've given.

Agreed. Skyrim is an open-world, first person, lone wolf action RPG where dragons play a pivotal role in the main story. Dragon Age is a hub focused, third person, "tactical" group combat RPG where some dragons appear in the side quests. They're different subsets of a genre.

Worse, actually. Markedly worse in every way, shape, and form, such that it makes you PINE for the first one even if you disliked it. If you want to know, just check [a href="http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3449674"]this Let's Play out[/a]. It does a pretty good job of concisely summing up what the DA2 experience is like.

Wait wait wait the (good) Spyro or the new Spyro?
Because I think we all can agree that the old Spyro would kick Alduin's ass any day of the week.

Eh, let 'em bash away. I loved Dragon Age 2; in some ways even better than Origins. My time with Skyrim has been amazing so far. But for me, it scratches a completely different itch than Dragon Age.

Besides, people trying to bolster the quality of their preferred game by attacking another one does nothing but amuse me these days.

When you can't even compare WRPG's to one another without a bunch of people saying they aren't comparable, it's getting ridiculous.
