Skyrim: Why is anyone remotely surprised?

Ok so, I've been seeing a lot of complaints about the game lately, bad controls, dodgy interface, samey combat systems to III and IV. The weird thing is, the people complaining are acting like it's some kind of surprise. I've played Elder Scrolls III and IV and both of them have had the same issues since it's departure from the original setup. Not that the original was some kind of priceless gem either, I mean it was ok, but not really stand-out sort of good.

Back to the point. Here are some points of interest prospective buyers might want to note.

1. The trailer showed about 4 seconds of actual gameplay which was a blatant (and failed) attempt to hide the fact the entire thing was basically built off of a prettified version of Oblivion with no real updates to gameplay.

2. Since Morrowind, the series has been plagued by the same issues without fail. Bad AI and interface, blocky movement, and that annoying thing where guards are linked by some kind of unholy hive mind so that the guards on one side of the kingdom know when you've broken wind on the other.

3. This isn't exactly a complaint but before do anything, ask someone who has played Oblivion consistently since it's release or thereabouts exactly how many mods he has running on his game. Chances are, many many many mods. So once again, users somehow manage to take a few days to plug the gaping holes Bethesda leaves in their games.

Now before I get too much hate let me say that I do not by any means DISLIKE Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim. They are very pretty games with a nice dynamic and once you learn the ins and outs of the mod community and system it's quite enjoyable. However this is why I make a point not to buy Bethesda games on day one. They tend to... well.. suck. That is until the first wave of patches comes around the a few mods pop up to fix the usually GLARING deficiencies. So to those of you who have complaints about Skyrim. Suck it up, that's what happens when you lack any form of pattern recognition.

1. theres a lot of gameplay updates. they've redone combat, magic, leveling, perks, the menu system, armour...

2. the guards aren't linked like that any more. its based on the area you're in.

3. i played Oblivion on XBox... as i am doing with Skyrim.

but yeah, there are a lot of things that should be evened out/patched up.

Maybe if we still got fucking demos...

Uh, okay? If you don't want to buy the game then don't... If people don't want to wait, and can deal with the bugs then surely that's their choice? You don't need to imply that they're making the wrong decision.

Well, buying the game wasn't necessarily a bad decision, I was perfectly willing to put up with Oblivions unique... quirks... when it first came out, I just wasn't willing to do it again. It isn't the buying of the game that was a mistake, it was buying it then complaining about problems with it that anyone with an ounce of common sense could've told them were probably going to be in the game. That's all.

Honestly I'm probably GOING to buy it. However I already went through the gameplay issues with Oblivion AND Morrowind and so decided to wait until the mod community has solved the myriad issues it will have.

Yea, I know some of issues have changed. I get to hear about ad nauseum from three different friends. I was only mentioning some of the previous issues with the games that were carrying over. As for the guard thing that was mostly a joke at my own expense. I played a rogue/assassin type when I first bought Oblivion and had to suffer through that particular anomaly until the mod came out that removed it.

You could do what I ended up doing with 'Fallout: New Vegas'. Wait for 6 months after release, then spend a pittance on a pre-owned copy. That way, if it bugs out you can still justify buying it, because you got a lot of game for not a lot of money. (I bought New Vegas for £7)

I can understand people making threads because they're overexcited and think that their voice needs to be heard rather than risk being the last post in another thread but seriously if you're just making blatantly obvious comments can't you do that in a thread that already exists? At this point you're just contributing to all the spam here.

I'm actually surprised how much it's improved, considering it's the same core gfx engine...

People were expecting Virtual Jesus, but in the end all they got was a video game...

I was actually surprised how similar this game was to Fallout 3...but maybe it's just that Fallout was similar to Elder Scrolls.

I couldn't stand Oblivion but I'm finding that Skyrim is quickly finding its way to being one of the best RPG's I've ever played. The characters may not be as compelling as what you'll find in a Bioware game, but the beautiful world of Skyrim is a joy to roam around in and the combat, while flawed, is surprisingly entertaining. I'm having a great time.

I'm incredibly surprised, I expected to like the game, but this is something on a whole other level.

Also many of your points seem to be... well... wrong, basically. The Hive-Mind thing is gone, the game-play changes to combat, stealth, crafting and levelling up are MASSIVE (with the possible exception of melee combat, for which the changes are merely numerous), and I only know 2 people who played a lot of Oblivion and they both had it for consoles.

However, the game does have one major flaw, my little brother loves it too, and he has therefore stolen large portions of my Skyrim time away from me. He's the only reason I'm even here to post on this thread, in fact.

Hello everyone. While I would normally be posting this as Crystal Honecker, the damn site won't let me log in. Wow. Just wow. Look at all these people complaining. If you don't like Skyrim, stop playing it! No one wants to hear you whine about all the things you wanted but didn't get and all the bugs and all the glitches and BLAH BLAH BLAH!!! It was made on the Creation Engine, a new system they developed just for this game. And I also noticed that lordmardok posted that the Skyrim trailer only showed about 4 seconds of real gameplay as a way of hiding the fact that it was exactly like Oblivion, just "prettier"......Okay. Let's get a few things straight. If it were really "Just like Oblivion", then it would be called "Oblivion". But it's not because it's called "Skyrim". And did you even watch Todd Howard's three part gameplay video? It showed over 20 minutes of gameplay, and it looked great. And even if it wasn't as great as it looked, that doesn't mean you have to complain about it. At least it's not World of Warcraft. The Elder Scrolls series has won Game of the Year for both Morrowind and Oblivion, and I'm sure Skyrim will follow suite. So in short, stop complaining about something like an ignorant child and walk away because I'm sure you have to get back to your incredibly important life. And lordmardok, I do not mean to offend you in any way. I only used you as an example because your comment is similar to others I've seen, and I wanted to use it as an example. I respect you as a fellow critit (If you don't mind me calling you that). This post is directed towards all the whiny trolls I've seen commenting since yesterday.

The guard thing is actually a lot better. They still know what you've done and swarm from all over a city really damn fast, but the no longer no about crimes you committed anywhere else.

Things I'd like to add:

While the world is mighty beautiful, it's mostly dead. And Bethesda have spread out the quests all over the place. I've already spend a good deal of time just sprinting through the countryside. I'm not begging for constant Cliffracer attacks (IIRC) like in Morrowind or an animal per square meter density of 1, like in Gothic 3's dreaded (and quite similar) Nordmar region, but a little more than nothing would be nice.
And though I appreciate a large world, some form of instant travel would be nice. Not the carriages in front of the lager towns. Something like a teleport stone, so that when I leave a dungeon, I'm right back home and don't have to travel that empty world again.

Also, I do find it a bit on the easy side. Save for a single "one hit and you're toast"-boss (the skinner), I've had no problems whatsoever. I mean, I do avoid the giants.

And it's a bit unbalanced. I've chosen a Wood Elf, expecting to be a thief, but with no-one but some select few fences (that I've not yet located) buying stolen goods, what's the point. Besides, I have too much coin anyways. Sneaking seems then a complete waste of XP, don't know when I've last seen an enemy who was alone and waiting for a backstab. Lockpicking works fine for me even though I've not invested anyting into this tree. Once again, an RPG that treats the Thief like an afterthought.

Lastly, I have to say I hate limited inventories. If it's in games like Deus Ex, it might lend some strategic element to it (or so they say). But with the inventory in Skyrim being large enough for you to carry around your essentials, all the limitation does is add a WHOLE F*CKING LOT of micro-management. Towards the end of every dungeon crawl, even with a companion loaded up, I find myself doing the ol' "coin per pound" calculating in my head to see what crap I should drop and leave.

I don't think many people should be surprised: The strength of the Bethesda games has never been something we can thank the developers for, these games are made great by the additions of the modding communities.

Except the majority of players find them fantastic without mods

Combat: no, fundamentally the same, with slight additions (dual-wielding)
Magic: no, fundamentally the same, just with fewer features
Leveling: the same but simplified
Perks: I'll give you that
Menus: You're right! They've redone the menus! Specifically, they've made them awful. You cannot navigate them with a mouse, forcing you to use WASD. Why? Bad. Console. Port.
Armour: the same

2. The guards are still linked, they've just gone from one big hive mind to lots of little hive minds.
