This game is fantastic yet I haven't heard about it anywhere. The 5-day steam sales gave me a taste for cheap games so browsed around to see what else I'd been missing out on.

Found this strange little medieval/steam-punk game:

Hammerfight ($9.99):
http://store.steampowered.com/app/41100/
I had no idea what the hell I was looking at in the screenshots, so don't feel bad if you don't understand yourself. Grab the demo and you'll understand.

You control a flying box with your mouse. Attached to this box, are medieval weaponry, like swords, axes, shields, and morningstars. Through the use of physics, when you move the box with your mouse, it swings the weapons attached to it. This tight interaction give a great sense of feedback when you whirl a morningstar around and slamming into the opponent's face, flinging them back and slamming them into the cliffside and stunning them. The power of your swing is dependent on your skill since the damage is calculated using physics. (It's not really the same, but I got the same feel as that old game Die by the Sword, don't know if any of you have even heard of it)

There's additional items you can pick up and use as you play, like throwing stars, spears, bombs, acid etc. Gems you can socket into the various weapons you purchase in the stores. Shields that defend against blows (until they shatter from repeated impact).

  • Plot: There's a pretty decent story wrapped around this culture. The exposition is that people known as "riders" are able to control these flying craft and have become the knights in these flying societies. A flying medieval culture is a pretty interesting concept, they even tamed flying worms for use as blimps to get around.

Graphics: It seems that they've hand-drawn all the graphics, it looks fantastic, especially with the additional effects layered over it, but this also means that they don't scale well. Doesn't matter once you're playing in full-screen. Try the demo and see them in motion. All those little bits and pieces of the flying machines and animals can be slashed and smashed to bits, turning them in flying debris. Destructible terrain too, I smashed a pillar down in the arena and it crushed a couple of spectators.

Sound: Interesting mediterranean/middle-eastern theme going on here. Sets a good atmosphere for the game.

    Modes:
Story, Arena, and a 4-player multiplayer by connecting additional mice to your computer. Haven't seen many PC games where multiple people can play from the same location.

Is it just me, or is Hammerfight a really /stupid/ name? Sounds casual and campy, which really doesn't fit this game at all. Original name was Hammerfall, which sounds much better in my opinion.

Are you asking what ours is?

Because if not I think this might belong is User Reviews.

I'll check out the game though.
Ha, sorry I should've made that more clear. Yes, please talk about your own sleeper hits here. Games you love, but haven't seen anyone talking about.

EDIT: To clarify further, a sleeper hit is a great game that doesn't have advertising or hype. A great game that does have advertising or hype is simply a hit, not a sleeper hit. The difference is that us gamers miss out on sleeper hits because we've never heard of them, as opposed to us missing out on hits because we've heard of them and decided we don't want to try it.

Well I'll tell you this now, I played The Saboteur at work today and that is a big pile of medicoreness. I hoped it would have been good-ish.

Rayman Revolution! A great update to a legend of a game!

The Godfather 2. So repetitive and the graphics are not good but it is so amazingly fun and fantastic!

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, ok so it's a collection game, but I actually found myself having a lot of fun with many Genesis games I never got the chance to play.

Devil Survivor, it's been mentioned here and there but then again the Shin Megami Tensei franchise has never been really big outside Japan.

It's a great SRPG with darker themes while still having a bit of the humor the Persona series had. The atmosphere in the game is almost stifling as society breaks down.

Amazing game. I'm on

The third day where you get a message saying Beldr will be revived and will kill hundreds of people. And then I shat a brick. Very intrigued to see where this will go.

It's almost embarrassing how many of my posts contain the words "Cryostasis" and "best game of 2009" -- I'd reckon that it's an unhealthy percentage. I don't have the free time to spam every gaming website with Cryostasis praise, but if I did, I would. Seriously, check out the game. It's dirt cheap on Amazon. And I haven't heard of Hammerfight, but you've intrigued me enough to look into it a bit more, at least. I must have missed it on the Steam sales thingy, I probably would have bought it if I had seen it.

Also, Tropico 3 just came out! It's Tropico -- yes, you should all buy it. Who doesn't want to role-play as Castro? Err, that came out wrong. In any case, it's a great game that definitely deserves more attention.

Braid and Trine came out on PC this year.

Mirror's Edge was incredible to me, and I wish people supported the innovation more. The PC version came out in 2009, so I'll go with that.

Torchlight...
Torchlight is shaping up to be a true winner though.

Borderlands. I don't think anyone saw that coming. Especially whoever is in charge of manufacturing it since the game is still super rare in my area.
