Small venue or huge amphitheater?

On the 26th of this month I am going to go see AFI in a pretty small theater here in Portland and in March I am going to see Killswitch Engage at the same place (the Roseland Theater for those of you who may live in this neck of the woods). I have seen plenty of live videos of both bands where they are headliners and playing for thousands of fans.

What do you guys and gals prefer when you go to see your favorite band? Would you rather be cramped up in a small little theater or would you rather sit back and watch in a big amphitheater?

Personally, I would much rather be in a tiny club/theater/etc. I think that the connection that the band has with the fans is a whole lot stronger then say at some arena. I get the feeling that the band is playing for the fans not just at the fans...if that makes sense.

So what do you guys think? Any sweet experiences?

Depends on the artist. Some bands thrive in a smaller environment, and the connection is greater with the band, but there isnt wasnt any greater feeling than sitting in an arena with 19,000 other fans singing along to Born to Run. I'd have to say it depends.

I always prefer smaller venues for the acts I really want to see, but there's nothing like a massive arena sometimes.

Provided it's mixed well, I'll take either.

tough call
huge concerts have that 'this is epic' sensation, whereas small venues are a lot more friendlier.
suppose i'd go with the small venues.

some bands can pull off a big venue show, they have to have a good stage show to go with it tho, such as tool.

however i vastly prefer small venues. there's something about the smaller shows that are just better compared to the bigger arena/ampitheatres. i've seen some bands at both and frankly i thought they gave a better show at the smaller one, i think it had more to do with the people there were the "real" fans of the band.

i just got back from seeing my friend play a show at a smaller venue, it was a ton of fun. i also get to go see Paul Di'anno play at a world famous small club on thursday, doubt there will be more than 100 people there. the sad part is it's last show at the club as it's closing down even tho it's a hole, i'll still miss it.

I think you have poor taste in music.

OT: I don't even go to concerts. Why would you ever want to be:

A- packed into a tiny room with loads of people, or
B- packed into a huge room with loads of people

when you could listen to music at home.

I listen to music at home all the time but it does not capture the same energy and excitement that I get from going to concerts. To each their own on musical taste.

I agree with you 100% there. I saw NIN at a big arena and they had an amazing stage setup. It is hard to explain so here is a video:

Small venue, hell yes. Those are the best kinds of gigs, intimate atmosphere, sheer chaos and EVERYONE gets a clear view of the band.

Huge places are just... dull.

Depends. I saw the motherfucking Cancer Bats at the Bristol O2 arena 2, which is tiny, and it was wicked. However, you can't beat a good festival. Yay for Soni '10!
