Here and there, Yahtzee will make mention of this particular product and associate it with all things good. It even makes a badge on the Escapist for having its mention in Zero Punctuation. So finally, I actually had a chance to get a jar of the stuff at an event where I can get at some imported products (they also had jellybabies), and that included some Branston Pickle.

And I have to agree that it's rather good stuff. What about you? Had any? What do you think of it? How many of you tried it simply because Yahtzee makes reference to it? What's it good on?

I have a jar of it in the fridge at home, it's really quite nice on a grilled cheese sandwich.

I don't think I've ever actually eaten it. I've had Branston Pickle flavour crisps and they weren't disgusting. Don't particularly want to buy a whole sodding jar of it just in case I hate the stuff, mind you.

Pickles on a grilled cheese sandwich?
As the resident Grilled Cheese Guru, I hereby condemn you from ever again partaking in the adding of cheese to bread. This ban will last no fewer than three (3) years, after which your eligibility for making grilled cheese will be reviewed by the seven World Cheese Czars. If you are deemed eligible, you will be subject to a probationary period and will be limited to Kraft Singles until you've demonstrated the ability to handle better cheeses.

You've done this to yourself.

Oh I love it so! I'm so glad it's getting out there too as they stopped making as much which made me quite sad.

I usually put it with some ham or a nice little cold meat sandwich, yum yum!

I've been eating it my whole life though, my grandparents (who come from England, I'm Canadian for reference) let me try it and I've been hooked since I was 3 I think. It's also surprisingly good for you.

What's your opinion of a ham and cheese melt, then? Because that's just a grilled cheese with ham.

I can't really comment on meat in the sandwich. I don't like pork in generally, so my opinion about ham is skewed. I guess I have funny taste buds, because all pork has this really awful aftertaste to me. Other sliced meats just don't fit at all. And if you put hamburger meat in it, then usually the burger overpowers the cheese to the point of it not being a grilled cheese anymore.

So the answer to your question: inconclusive. You'll have to go to the czars if you really want to know.

Branston Pickle is best with strong cheddar cheese or some nice sliced meat like ham on a sandwich. or both.

although if your American i have heard tell you likely won't know what real cheese is either :p

i buy Branston every time i do a shopping. its what turns a plain cheese or meat sandwich into something you actually want to eat.
So glad you were joking, because you all know that cheese that isn't cheese is just there for the vegans. Whereas I like cheese and these ideas are worth a try, definitely. I'm liable to give the sandwich ideas a try momentarily.

Oh no! Sir...I didn't mean to assert your authority. I'll...I'll...

I'll make you a grilled cheese sandwich!

Still living out here in the colonial wastelands of Saskatchewan and have yet to pick up a jar of the fabled, godlike pickles. I'm a pickle enthusiast so I'm very curious.

I love the stuff. Unfortunately you have to import it where I live, and it's too expensive to get on a regular basis.

I visited some relatives in the UK a few years ago, and they gave me a jar right before I left. It was one of the best parting gifts I ever received.

Maybe in England, but here in the US, we're quite proud of our non-cheese but also non-vegan cheese products. American Cheese, Velveeta Cheese, and Cheese Whiz are all horrifying products of food science, and while none of them are really cheese, they're all delicious.

Okay, so I get the general gist of the stuff as being something quite tasty, and I can also see that many of you guys favor it on sandwiches made of melted cheese, but what does Branston Pickle actually taste like? Does it taste fruity, is it more of a sweet flavor, is it savory? Or does it just taste like jelly would?

Hang on. The latter two I agree with, but I think American cheese is just a TYPE of cheese, not a fake cheese. As in, it's a dairy product made from actual milk. Or at least, the ones that aren't soy-cheese are. My point is that there is real American cheese that IS cheese. (And it's still a HELLUVA lot better than Swiss.)

EDIT: Jack has a stupid question. Would Branston Pickle work in chili at all? I know that's weird, but...opinions?

No, American cheese is what happens when you take cheddar and process it until it's unrecognizable. Velveeta is basically just a big block of American that's more convenient for cooking with.
