So can someone relieve my fear about the 21st?

I'm not one with a faith. And logic tells me the chance of such a thing happening is the same on any given day, and that it's astronomically low.

Still, everytime I hear one of these doomsday predictions it DOES freak me out to a certain extent. A couple years ago during my senior year of high school it was some twat with a book saying a giant tsunami would hit the east coast, I was freaked out all school day. Hell during the oil spill some half-baked loon came up with a story that a methane bubble would be released from the gulf and wipe out the planet in a giant fireball, that kept me up all night after reading it.

It's silly to worry about such things. True or not. I know this. Anyone wanna take a solid stab at reassuring me the sun will still rise the 22nd? Because I'm sure I'm not the only one with just a tinge of anxiety about doomsday predictions.

EDIT: Really didn't mean to go about this from a religious point of view. More like how these kinds of bullshit end of the world crap can really fuck with some peoples heads, regardless of weather a religion is tied to it or not.

A further question: Am I really the only fool with just a tiny bit of anxiety about it?

You have to remember that doomsday predictions come and go all the time. So logically the chances of a doomsday actually happening on a day that people expect it, are lower than it happening on some random day.

Just as you said, use your logic. People have been predicting that the world is going to end since, well, a long time ago.
Also, someone here quoted the bible before:
"No one knows when that day or hour will come-not the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father"
So there's that too?

Alright.

It's a load of shite. People can't predict crap today, let alone in ancient times. We can't even get the weather right. Also, if something were in the works, shouldn't we be seeing the dregs of it right now? As in preludes and so on? Nothing. These things don't just pop in. The world does not work that way.

Are you serious?

Lots of people have predicted the end of the world before. They were all wrong.

Think of it this way, you are mortal and death is a certainty for any living creature. To be afraid of a doomsday is to be fearful of death. To be afraid of death is to be fearful of the inevitable. Why fear the inevitable? Might as well work on what isn't inevitable and that is a life worth living for.

Didn't the guy make a doomsday prediction before that was totally wrong? Looks, feels, smells, tastes like a scam to me

"However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows." Matthew 23:36

I think we'll make it past the 21st.

Sure, this particular doomsday prediction is derived from a book written before our current calender even existed and before the we started counting leap years. So by those accounts their prediction is bullshit.

Uh, stop thinking about it?

It seems to me that anyone who is getting caught up in this is because this date has been getting so much publicity. And why is that? Because some crazy, religious radio broadcaster did his research in the Bible and all signs point to Armageddon in less than a week? This being the very same guy who made a similar prediction back in 1994 which clearly did not come to fruition?

Well, I'm planning on destroying the world on the 19th so it's irrelevant anyways.

Because no one will stop me now

Muhahahaha...

Yeah, really isn't anything you can do about it anyways. We're still waiting for 2012. Think about how lame it would be if it ended the 21st of May this year.

It just doesn't work. Not enough of a ring to it.

The world ends 5/21/11 !!!

See^? Doesn't fall out of the mouth that easy. It's clearly bullshit.

Very scientific.

That said, while I fervently disagree with the source, it is entirely true that the end could be thousands of years from now, or tomorrow. We don't really understand all of the laws governing the plain of existence we inhabit, at best we have some theories. That is to say, you shouldn't be worried about the 21st, because the world could end any day. Your life could end any day. In the words of the philosopher Lao Tzu, "chase after money and security, and your heart will never unclench." There is nothing you can do to assure yourself that the end is not nigh, that is why these doomsday prophecies bother you even when you know how ridiculous they are. Trying to convince yourself that you're safe is impossible, all you can really do is learn to accept that you're not.

Simple, the prediction is based off Biblical beliefs. The Bible states that God, and only God knows the end times. It is very clear about that. "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

This prediction is based off some random math equations a pastor came up with from unclear dates to equal a number that's convenient for him.

If it makes you feel any better, look at how Harold Camping came up with this weird prediction.

Yes, back in 1992 the same person wrote a book declaring the world will end in 1994

don't worry about it.
besides there not being any specific reason I've heard (basically just "the world will end somehow"), if you wanna fall back on faith, the Bible does say that no one knows when judgement day is, not any human, not Jesus, only God himself. so, according to the Bible at least, anyone on Earth claiming to know the end of the world is automatically wrong.
so yeah, no logical reason, no supernatural reason. don't freak out about it and live your life. fear isn't a healthy thing, focus on the good in life. everyone's gonna die some day, but dwelling on it'll make you go insane.

As has been mentioned in the thread, many, MANY people have predicted the end of the world on dates that have long since passed.

From what I gather, some people have a desire for the world to end in their lifetime because they want their generation to be the last, thus special. That, or they're wacko.

Anyway, getting all hot and bothered about something that may or may not happen regardless of anything you do is...pointless. Ignore 'em and move on.

Hey, if you wanna grab a few drinks on the 20th I'm so down for that. If you are underage you will still be abiding by the law.

If we all died on the 21st, I'd be happy. Doomsday does not occur for people to be happy about it. Ergo, doomsday will not come.
