I'm not the most literate when it comes to how stocks and buyouts work in business. Especially when it comes to Japan. But it seems that in a recent turn of events Capcom did not renew their buyout defense policy. So they are now open to being bought by any entity that has the money to sink in to.

Is this really gonna be the case?

Thoughts?

EA is probably salivating right now. Another studio it can buy out, pillage the IP, then close down.

This is going to be an interesting fight no matter who gets involved.

Foreign conglomerates are barred from buying out Japanese corporation due to Japanese trade laws. EA can't legally own Capcom.

So what you're saying is, assuming a buyout is on the way, there's really only two parties that might go for it?

And like that you've destroyed half the speculation on that link, bravo sir!

OT: Well I guess either Sony or Nintendo will buy Capcom. My real thoughts are whether Resident Evil fans would prefer to use the PS4 controller or the Wii U game pad.

Who says it has to be a game company? It could be an investment firm or something.

OT: Assuming anybody tries to buy them (and stock being available for sale doesn't necessarily mean somebody will buy it), and assuming it's a video game company, Sony or Nintendo would make the most sense. It would be a pretty big boon for either company to have those franchises under their belt.

This law has always struck me as a little odd. Is this a similar situation in any other countries?

Considering the relations to Platinum if Nintendo or Sega go their hands on Capcom it would basically mean that Platinum would have Devil May Cry to work with.

That would make it worth it.

BS Renault owns Nissan for example, foreign owners just have to register with the finance ministry.

If they do I just hope the person that buys them treats their properties a bit better than how Capcom treats them now. It wouldn't be hard though, just let MegaMan out of the basement once in a while and stop force-feeding DLC into Street Fighter's throat.

Is that true? I am basing my knowledge on the ATLUS buyout awhile back (SEGA Sammy ended up buying them). Those speculating that a foreign entity might buy them were quickly shot down every time the law was mentioned. Maybe jumping through bureaucratic hoops to get something like that sorted out is just not worth it most of the time.

It may not be possible due to Japanese law (I can't confess to know Japanese business law) but I'd love Microsoft to buy them.

Take a journey with me. Microsoft buys Capcom. Next E3, "The legend returns...The one you've all been waiting for..."

[HEADING=1]Megaman Legends 3!*[/HEADING]

*[sub]Exclusive to Xbox One[/sub]

The salt would be magnificent to see.

It would be a decent get for any of the big three to pick them up though, if they treated the IPs better than Capcom did.

Actually, Renault doesn't "own" Nissan. They have the largest stock holding in the company right now yes, and it's only 43.4%. The deal is from the Renault-Nissan Alliance. In this case Nissan willingly went into a deal with Renault when it came to manufacturing cars and other projects. Whether Renault fully buys out Nissan would be for the Japanese government to decide, as the Japanese government can deny mergers or buyouts just like how the courts in the United States can. Japan generally will not let domestic companies be bought out by foreign ones, because it's a source of Japanese pride.

Yeah...no. That'd be a terrible idea. What they need to do is release it on the 3DS like it was originally supposed to. I know quite a few people who bought a 3DS for that game, and there's no way in hell I'd buy a console I'd never use except for one game just to get closure. >.>
Plus, after what's happened to Rare, I don't trust Microsoft much with another company with big titles from childhood. I'm still trying to heal the Conker wound they inflicted on me back at E3...

What about Square-Enix? Are they still considered a Japanese company? I'd love Square-Enix to buy them. They wouldn't ignore PC and they love catering to nostalgic gamers which means old Dante trumps new Dante!

Not wanting to be the ill-informed cynic type that I so despise, but...

What's going strong in the Japanese game market? Smartphones.

I know that Capcom is already heavily involved in both traditional and smartphone gaming, but I can imagine at least certain well-loved but perhaps slightly dead properties being bought up and used in that space. Which certainly won't please many people; but I hear that's what Capcom are kinda doing anyway.

I don't think any game company that values their solvency would be dumb enough to buyout Capcom. Anyone who does so also buys Capcom's debt, and besides that, Capcom is the very definition of a toxic asset. If they had any brains (hint: they don't) they'd start auctioning off their IP. There is no market (thus profit) in failure, and Capcom is the goddamned da Vinci of failure.

Im not sure how I feel about them being bought out as a company although they definitely need new leadership they have made far far to many bad decisions over the last few years and refuse to learn from them.

I would love some other companies to get some of their IPs though like the Skullgirls team getting the Darkstalkers IP for instance. Maybe Arc gets the Rival Schools Ip that could be fun.

With how terrible Capcom has been for the last several years, I think being bought out by someone who actually knows what they're doing is the best thing that could happen to them.

Nintendo! Your position has been steadily improving, and you have won a lot of points after E3. If you obtain Capcom's stable of IPs, you have this console generation in the bag. You know what you must do.
