So after finally trying this game two years late. It is now probably my favorite game of all time. So I have to ask,is there anything else like it,gameplay wise? By that I mean, with combat where,if you are swinging a massive slab of iron at an opponent, you damned-well better hit them,or you will be wide open. And preferably with similar kick your teeth in until you learn difficulty. And I know about Demon Souls, but It may be a while before I get a hold of my PS3 to try it.

Not really. However if you are willing to branch out a little, try Dragons Dogma. Open world with minimal fast travel, scary shit at night and boss fights that require some thinking. I see it as a half way point to Dark Souls.

Oh yeah, I remember a demo of that game! Seemed fun, I will give it a shot.

If you just want a hard game there's always Binding of Issac.

For something closer to Dark Souls though...Dragon's Dogma sounds close, but the big monster fights tend to drag on and your pets get annoying when they try to be helpful.

There's also Rogue Legacy, which relies largely on pattern memorization and quick thinking to get you through.

The monster hunter games have similar pattern recognition requirement to them and some of the monsters can kill you in just a few hits. The problem is they suffer from severe grinding issues (even more so then dark souls) and they don't have a rich story or setting

Well, Dark Souls kinda sorta reminded me of Blade of Darkness (there is also an alternative title I can't recall at the moment). Though BoD is much more linear in many respects, it does fights you have to be careful - you don't have many sources of healing, so you might find yourself fighting enemies at, say 20 HP. Also, one of the fun things it had was it's some of the enemies that carry and drop health potions and if you don't kill them fast enough, they'll just use it to heal themselves. Also - traps, you don't to fall into them, so you have to be aware of your environment. While the game doesn't have respawn system and such, it does punish you for using saves - as in, the more times you save, the lesser the rank you get for finishing the level. It might have also had limited save slots per level.

The Kings Field games, also created by From Software, are considered predecessors to Dark Souls/Demons Souls.

The Dark Arisen expansion/re-release especially seems to emulate a lot of the dark atmosphere and difficulty of the Souls games. It's very oppressive and low level characters get absolutely destroyed.

King's Field? Another FROM title, in the interests of full disclosure I haven't played it, but I've heard it described as a predecessor. Dragon's Dogma (vanilla at least) and Monster Hunter aren't that close, I don't think.

Ninja Gaiden Black is difficult, but not from lack of mobility or anything. It has really good ai. Look it up, it is not entirely like dark souls but the combat is good and challenging.

That's news to me.

I loved playing KF back on the PlayStation, and even tried the one they made for PS2.
Unsurprisingly, it was hard as hell.

If we're going by FROM games, didnt they make Otogi?
If so, it shows there too. Bloody hard game that was.

Risen for PC has a massive open world to explore and challenging combat. You would probably like it.

There is also a demo for it (on steam for example) which allow you to explore parts of the island and getting some feel for the combat.

Unfortunately, no.

Still, it's good to hear another one has taken the ride, done the trip, liked the experience. Welcome to the club! ;)

From a certain 'feel' standpoint, the King's Field games on PSX are similar (also by FROM)... but the general sense of dread and isolation is somewhat countered these days by graphics that haven't aged too well in fifteen years or so. They are also very limited.

Dragon's Dogma has been mentioned - I'm not too certain you get much of the D* Souls vibe out of it. For me, there was just too much chatter that went on pretty much all the time. Not a bad game, but I'd maybe want to compare it more to a mix of the old Capcom fantasy games (Shadows over Mystara, Tower of Doom) mixed with Skyrim and a sprinkle of Shadow of the Colossus, while any and all playing is done while you're wearing a headset with everyone in your channel of choice quipping away like there's no tomorrow. You're bound to hate your AI party members pretty quickly.

Dark Souls (and it's somewhat superiour predecessor Demon's Souls) feel more like the only serious 3D evolution to classics such as, say, Ghosts n Goblins, with a twist of lemon, tears, sweat and despair. Yummy.

To understand what my discovery of this gaming bliss felt like, watch the first 47 seconds of this here gem:

If you like 2D sidescrollers the cutesy looking ARPG Fortune Summoners Deluxe felt like a Dark Souls lite when I played it straight after DS. 2D fighter combat with slow punishable attacks, good enemy AI and a high(ish) penalty of death.

If it sounds like your bag play the demo as a alot of ppl were put off by it's controls as it does need abit of practice to get used to, someone said the special move inputs are the same as Smash Bros.

I would have to say the closest thing i can think of would be Maximo: Ghost to Glory for the PS2. Although Maximo is closer to the original ghosts and goblins than Dark Souls, but it's still a fair and difficult game.

Play Skyrim on the hardest difficulty with Ai improving mods, you get a certain feel like Dark Souls, but frankly we're all just going to have to wait for 2

...with a cutesy look and the focus pretty strictly on action-y platforming, making it feel very much like Zelda or 3D Mario!

Aye, I think Maximo is a truly fun game, but it's more like the missing link between G'n'G and D* Souls!

Second on this. Severance blade of darkness is linear but has the similar style of dark souls where any enemy can kill you no matter how well geared you are. Carelessness and lack of exploration within each stage will leave you without any healing items and dead in the water. I've still never finished the game because IT'S FUCKING HARD. You have a choice of 4 characters, I go for the dwarf warrior or the knight personally. I should really go and play that game again
