I just watched the first two (they're the only ones aired so far, obviously) episodes of season 2 of Gravity Falls.

What are your opinions? I'll give mine in lovely spoiler tag because the second episode literally aired the day that I'm typing this. Overall, I'd say that they're great, and, honestly, an improvement over the already damn good first season. They give better focus to characters that were either back-burner or not completely focused on in an effort to flesh them out, and I think it's great.

Episode 1: I like how they're leaving Stan with several of his "cards" left to hide from the kids even though they know he knows at least some of what is going on. I've also noticed what could be a trend for this season...well, two things, but I'll get into them in the second episode. Overall, funny, the jokes were well set up, and it even had a Stan moment to rival the "punching a dinosaur" moment from last season.

Episode 2: Even better than the first episode. It actually adds a bit of realistic closure (but not a complete one) to the whole Dipper - Wendy thing. I mean, it's clear Dipper's not "over" her yet, but they managed to paint the whole situation in a realistic light. Also, I'm beginning to fall in love with (metaphorically speaking of course, she's both a cartoon character and a minor) Wendy. She's a total badass without being some sort of femme fatale archetype. In other words, she's a pretty darn realistic (and interesting!) portrayal of a somewhat rebellious teenage girl. The two things I previously mentioned that I'm noticing as potential trends for this season are 1. the hunt for the author of the journals and 2. there being a sort of clue to set up the next episode in the previous. In the first episode, it set up the blacklight portion of the book as a clue (which would lead them to the hidden bunker in episode 2) and I'm pretty sure the next episode will involve the laptop computer somehow.

Anyway, enough of my yammering and theorycrafting: all in all, a great episode (maybe one of the best in my opinion), a cool monster (that Dipper/Mabel spider form the shapeshifter thing took was genuinely disturbing -- nice touch), and lots of potential for mystery in this season.

I am so glad that it is back!
So what is the machine triangle thing that Stan finally set up? I assuming it is loading (at 0.01%) and will throughout season 2 otherwise it would of done something by now! Also would Stan want Dipper book again cos of the hidden messages reveal by the UV light (for a smart kid, how did Dipper not figure that out sooner)? I'm pretty sure the hidden message can't be reveal under photocopy papers.

First thing first, I like The Thing reference and how dark it had gotten (scary looking shapeshifter especially when he become both the twin and he shed gree blood)!
Also I kind of somewhat dissapointed that Dipper feeling for Wendy got resolved so soon. Granted from the sound of it season 2 could be the last one ever cos Dipper mention they're in the last half of summer at the moment. Also the last bit with Soos saying "Good luck getting a good night sleep (or it was something similar to that) crack me up the most! I guess it is better that it got sorted out now than leaving it til the last few episodes (I looking at you Cutie Mark Crusaders!).

Man I was looking through my recorded shows and noticed I had two Gravity Falls episodes. I was like 'Holy Shit!' when I realized they were from the new season. That really snuck up on me.

Nick Fucking Offerman. Holy crap that was awesome. Great season premier with tons of memorable quotes. Some good character development with Stan and Dipper especially. Still left some questions about what the machine is and what's going on in the town while introducing new recurring characters with the FBI agents. I also really like how they introduced the hidden ink to the journal. Instead of having to introduce a new mcguffin each week to advance the plot they can keep using the journals in a new and interesting way. Kudos to the writers for thinking of that.

Man I liked this one a lot. I liked that they killed the romance subplot. It was good for some laughs and good character moments but a lot of shows make it drag on and on. There really wasn't anywhere for it to go so it's nice they aren't just keeping around for filler later.

All in all I think this a really strong start to season 2. It was just as funny and interesting as the best from season 1. I also love how they use the same background characters all the time. It makes the small town feel more alive. This is certainly my favorite cartoon by far.

I only saw episode 1 so far, but it seemed to be mostly filler. Is that possible for a cartoon like this?

The reason I say that is because they introduced the whole thing with Stan and the machine at the end of last season, and all they showed in ep 1 was... Stan sitting at the machine saying "at last, it's finally done" without giving the slightest hint what was being done. I was worried they'd be pressured into having "season arcs" and all that nonsense but was happy to see they continued the stand-alone tradition. I think it's a better show that way. Gideon got a bit annoying in S1 and his episodes were definitely the weakest.

I think the show's premise is best left as "kids having fun in a creepy town in summer" and only involving minor arcs. Which was pretty much what S1 was.
