basiclly the first TES game i ever played was oblivion, loved it and got skyrim recently but while on the internet i heard a LOT of folks going 'yeah i liked oblivion but its no morrowind' and 'OMG all elder scrolls games after morrowind suxed!morrowind is the beast gyem EVAR!!11!!' so i just got morrowind from in the post from amazon today, been playing it a fair bit it... plays quite diffrently to the other TES games (i've had to turn the difficulty slider way down)and is it just me or do skills increase a lot slower than in the newer games?

also genral morrowind thread if you want it to be.

I could never exactly get into it because of the combat system, but I'll be following this thread to see if there are tips and tricks to make the game more enjoyable. I really want to like that game... :p

The gameplay was always the part of Morrowind I couldn't stand, which was a shame cause everything else was so cool. So I just turned god mode on the whole time and never looked back. I'm sure there are more elegant solutions then that but it worked well enough for me.

And of course modding it helps too. I haven't found a whole lot of gameplay mods for it, but there are still some awesome ones like the Morrowind Graphics Extender, Morrowind Comes Alive, The Lighting Mod, Better Bodies (With Better Clothes and Better Beasts), Valitys Bitter Coast and Balmora mods, and Silgrad Tower.

Morrowind is great... the lack of levelled enemies/loot alone makes it worth playing if you liked Oblivion. My advice is, no matter what character you roll, take Alteration as a major or minor skill so you can effectively cast Levitate, Slowfall and Jump for much, much easier exploration.
Generally I prefer short blades to long (take less stamina to use, seem to hit quicker (though i'm rusty so i could be making that up), and there seemed to be more of them than long blades... plus, shadowsting)... and every character will want some kind of ranged/support option.
You obviously have no quest markers and the journal sucks, so unless you can find a good journal mod, it's worth keeping a notepad around so you can write down what you're doing and where you're supposed to be going. If you plan on completing all the guilds with one character, do a bit of research first, as severy guild quests make other guilds unplayable (killing members, stealing items, generally interfering), and it's easy to mess them up.

Morrowind is a very different beast to it's successors. if you got the exspansions things might be slightly easier. but be prepared for a difference. play in first person. i don't care if you did third in oblivion/skyrim, play in first person. I suggest a combat run first just to get acclimitised. Make sure you take lockpick skill. don't take medium armour. Do one run then start looking at mods.

You would be a good case study on the retroactive streamlining/"dumbing down" of the series. :p

More skills, more time to level them up, no compass or easily accessible fast travel, a dice-based to-hit system, among many other nuances (some being a bit archaic by today's standards)... does all that make for a more enjoyable experience now? It may have been a lot of people's first romp with TES (like me), but your first time is rarely trumped by another.

I love open world rpg's (non-isometric ones, before anyone starts waving the first Fallouts and Diablo's at me), and it wasn't until Morrowind came along that I realized that, so by nature, no game will ever truly one-up Morrowind in my book. :/

And on the whole, I'm liking the direction the series is going... I just hope we get to tread the warm sands of Elsweyr before too long. The Khajiit have gotten so little love in the series; they were largely slaves in Morrowind, a few shopkeepers in Oblivion (yay progress), but... man, in Skyrim they're mostly bandits or their dead bodies decorate dungeons. A couple trading caravans are their most benign appearance, but they said it themselves, the Nords don't let them in cities. :<

Wow, kinda ranted there... sorry. :|

The part about acrobatics and athletics is a horrible HORRIBLE advice.
By taking these two as major/minor skill you'll end up leveling too fast without managing to get enough multipliers for your main stats.

As a major and minor skill you should pick something that you wont use too often but that can still be useful and pick a race with most bonuses to skills you actually wanna use.

Lemme clarify.

If you want to play as a "paladin" (warrior with some restoration spells) you should take a race like Nord, Orc or Redguard (depending on what type of weapon you prefer), pick Restoration as one of the main skills, plus any combination of skills you will use from time to time but wont depend on (repair, sneak, speachcraft, alchemy, enchanting...). Your racial bonuses on weapon and armor types should be enough in the beginning, and since you'll be using weapons and armor (and shields) all the time those should rise pretty quickly.

This way you can control your leveling speed and make sure to get a good multiplier on stats every time you level up (preferably +5 on at least 3 stats)

This work for whatever type of class you want to make. It's kinda counter intuitive but you shouldn't pick skills you use most often as your main/secondary....and your should NEVER take acrobatics/athletics.

Oh my god this!

After you increase your alchemy skill, you can make very powerful potions!

Also: I didn't find mercantile to be a very useful skill.
When you get to the point where you can own everything with a sneeze, well...
By then, you won't have to worry about money.

EDIT:

okay thanks for the advice everyone, however i am playing it on the xbox 360 so no mods for me:(
I would...not recommend this.

If it's the only thing that you can play Morrowind on, then go ahead and play it, but I would recommend playing it on PC.

I've never ran into anything gamebreaking in Morrowind, but if you do, you'll want to fix it with the console.

As already stated, Morrowind is much different than oblivious and Skyrim. I for one enjoyed the game except for the combat system. All those misses ugh. But the landscapes and the story is great. I do think its more difficult than #4 and 5 but it sure is fun.

Oh, and cliff racers. I hate those things with a Passion

You shouldn't worry about misses too much. Sure they are a pain in the beginning but once you get your weapon skill to about 40-50 they stop being such a problem.

Doubtless Morrowind was bloody brilliant when it came out. Having first played it early last year, though, it has not aged well. I won't deny that the setting and story are far better than Oblivion and at least as good as Skyrim, but the game mechanics' constant reliance on random numbers is awful. If I fire an arrow point-blank into the face of an enemy standing still, I don't want to be informed that I missed him. I don't want to have to waste all my magicka potions failing to cast a spell, when in later games you either could or you couldn't.

But if you mod the shit out of it--there are some really impressive graphics mods out there, for one thing--the gameplay becomes acceptable, it becomes far prettier than you might expect, and you can just enjoy the world and the stories in it.

Oh how I pity you right now.

Go to Steam and buy yourself both Oblivion and Morrowind GOTY Editions, it's only about $20-$25 for both. Then go and download Morroblivion and play that instead. You still need Morrowind in order to play the mod though, they authenticate it by scanning your Morrowind.exe files.

These games are just so much more playable on PC. I also want to say that I'm sorry you won't get the most out of your Skyrim either due to lack of mod support (or not as much) on Console.
