My PS3 was having overheating problems. It would get super hot and freeze up in just a few minutes. I took it in to get it repaired and was told it was going to cost me $150. Today I figured what the hell so I broke out a multitool and took it apart myself, and blew some dust bunnies out of the fan. It works fine now. Took me all of half an hour.

How often do you think these tech repair places give you a huge quote and as soon as you walk out the door they either take off the top and blow it out with canned air or just push like three buttons?

EDIT: I'm starting to think that a little more background is necessary. I actually know the repair guy in question. He's a friend of mine who owns an all around repair shop. I was shocked at how easy the fix was for the amount he planned on charging me. I've known the guy for years and have always brought my stuff to him because I thought he was giving me good deals. But after my little foray into attempting his job I'm feeling like he for every time he genuinely had to do something that is technically difficult and spent time on it there's another time he just grabbed a can of air and blew it out and charged me the exact same amount.

EDIT: For people who think the title is misleading. All of this means that someone I know personally has been severely overcharging me for everything he's ever repaired for me for over ten years while misleading me into thinking he was giving me a good deal.

Its like what auto mechanics do. So I'm sure tech people do. I mean, look at what they charge for data recovery, its crazy.

Also when I read your title my mind went straight to the gutter.

Yeah, most people don't realize how easy it is to do such things. I get paid for doing it for a few people, and I always have to talk their prices down, because I do full cleanings, hardware and software, and still charge less than the "professionals" and undercut undercut undercut.

Still make a ton of easy cash when I do it.

Oh i have similar story. My 360 elite(been going 4 years and counting strong) had 2 red rings, meaning an over heating problem. So i brought it to a friend where upon he read from the electronic necronomicon and disected it fixed it and put it back together.

Auto repair I understand. Sometimes that takes actual work. I literally just blew two pieces of dust away.

True, but they also try and say that they performed hundreds of dollars in labor for unscrewing and removing a part and then screwing on a new one. Its still a rip off often times. I could do my own brakes for 60 bucks or pay a mechanic 400.

That highlighted statement is true. While I was working as a mechanic I can't tell you how many people got screwed. I'm glad I'm out of that field now.

Its like when you buy a Computer. It will literally cost half as much if you do it yourself and make it out of parts.

Pretty much anything that is mechanical/technological will be overpriced.

That brings up the reason i attempted this. Even if I couldn't get it to work again 80gig PS3's can be sold part by part and you can make enough to buy a slim. So I was going to win either way.

That must have been hard to knowingly rip people off as part of your job. I used to do it as waiter when I talked people into overly expensive wine when theres a better and cheaper alternative.

Finding an honest mechanic is tough. Yesterday I just paid 375 American Dollars for a new ignition switch plus the diagnostics they needed to do to figure it out. Was I ripped off?

The exact same thing happened to one of our old computers, and it was the same solution, too.
Yeah, knowing how to fix some of the more mundane physical things on your consoles is a good thing.

I can't tell you how many times I've sent my broken crap to my brother. Ipods, Playstations, DVD players. He always gets them running again. And usually, he does just crack them open and blow the dust out.

Though one time he re-aligned a laser for me. He says that's not too hard either.

I suppose I could do this shit myself, but I'm always worried I'll fuck something up.

If you went to a dealership, yes. Ignition switches really aren't that hard to replace and diagnosis would've lasted 10 seconds if the mechanic was experienced.
