I'm riding this bandwagon really late, I know. However, since I really want to play the second, and the first was on sale on Steam for 10$, I figured I might as well pick it up. Now, I want to share my thoughts on it so far.

I picked Mordecai as my character, because I like sniping. Also, Bloodwing is the coolest. I made him explosive. :3

Anyway. Before I really get into my opinion I'm going to say I'm not paying any attention at all to the story. Usually now I have the game volume at almost nothing and put some long youtube video on in the background. So I'm not going to say anything about it. Now, on to my opinion.

The guns are awesome. I love the sound, the look, and the feel of them, as well as the variety. There are so many I almost always find my inventory full after just one or two missions if I don't get to stop at a store along the way. The guns are definitely one of the big selling points of the game.

The art direction is another big plus for the game. It looks absolutely gorgeous, very stylish and full of personality. The "opening credits" are also incredibly cool. There's a bit of texture pop-in when loading into certain areas, but that's likely my computer, which chugs a bit in the face of smoke and some other particles.

However, while I'm having a lot of fun with the game, there are some things that don't sit well with me. One, the hit detection, and possibly hitboxes, feel rather wonky to me. There have been times where I've gone to snipe an enemy, with my crosshairs right on them, but the hit didn't register at all despite the fact they didn't move out of the way, and my aim didn't waver. There have been other times when I got a headshot when my crosshairs were slightly to one side of my target's head. This can make fights somewhat frustrating if it happens too often. It's not a deal-breaker, though.

A completely personal gripe is that I hate fighting the non-human enemies. Haaaaate it. Skags, spiderants, those stupid little bugs, and especially Rakks. My word, do I hate rakks. They're not generally all that strong but they're damned irritating. Generally I don't like enemies that get right up in my face though, unless I'm playing a non-shooter. Especially when they're a small target (i.e. fucking bugs).

Bosses have proven to be quite difficult. I'm soloing the game at the moment, and for at least two of them I've ended up using what amounts to an exploit because my character is just not tough enough to take out these enemies head-on. I have no idea how I'll fair with later bosses--and it wasn't a matter of levels. I have yet to take on a boss that was any more than a single level higher than me, if that. I simply didn't have enough breathing room between the boss and their minions. Of course, this could all boil down to my personal skills as a gamer, it's just rather annoying.

When I'm up until dawn because I've lost track of time while playing a game, though, I can't hold any of my gripes against it. I can't wait to get my hands on Borderlands 2. What did you guys think of it, if you've played it? And do you think the second is better, worse, or equal in quality?

Borderlands is probably one of my favorite games. Not the best game I've played, not by a long shot, but it still got a good 250 hours of playtime from me. On a top ten list, it'd be around place seven.

Comparing the first game with the second... I'd say that Borderlands 1 and Borderlands 2 are essentially the same game. The only real difference is the budget they had to make it with. The first one was developed with an indie mindset and the second one was made with a triple A budget that realized its own money-making potential.

Objectively, the second one is better. The first one, however, was a lot more fun for me. So much more fun than the second, in fact, that I'd honestly recommend skipping it until they have a GOTY edition.

But yeah, BL2 is a lot more of the same. There are differences, but the core game is similar enough that you're bound to enjoy it if you liked the first. There's a bit more of a story element (which a lot of reviews seem to focus on), but it's still very much gameplay based. The balance is better, the enemy variety is better (and you'll be pleased to know there's fewer sections with those bugs that you hate!), and it's a much better challenge in places. To nitpick, I'd say the itemisation wasn't quite as good as in the original, but it's still miles above other loot-em-ups.

Borderlands 2 is nothing but an improvement on the first game, while still being more or less the same game. They just worked on fixing little things for the better rather than making any big changes so you should love the second game.

In fact one of my favourite changes in Borderlands 2 is that there are far less Skags that you have to fight, which is a good thing for you since you dislike fighting the nonhuman enemies so much and lets face it Skags are pretty much the most irritating enemies to fight.

Yes, perfect. The less bugs the better.

I am definitely looking forward to BL2 more now, thanks to these replies! From what I've read about it, I already know I'll end up playing Zer0. I absolutely love the very concept of his emoticon face-holograms.

And I would have to say I agree about skags, obviously. I'm just happy that almost all my current weapons can kill all but the toughest of the buggers in one to three hits. Those alpha skag bastards are a pain in the ass either way though.

Borderlands 2 is way better. I was only able to get into Borderlands because of my friends. The first dungeon or so of the game was so boring, I would've quit the game after about 5 hours but I played a few hours with my friends and leveled up. It's not until you get to at least level 20 or so that the game became fun in my opinion because your powers and skills are so weak at the start that Borderlands is just basically a shooter for the first 5-10 hours, and Borderlands as just a pure shooter isn't very good. In Borderlands, Lilith (The Siren) starts out with over a 30 second cooldown on her phasewalking so you can only use it very sparingly, then later on you can be phasewalking every few seconds. Whereas in Borderlands 2, Maya (The Siren) phaselock cooldown starts at 13 seconds so at the very start of the game you are able to use your ability much more often. Phasewalking is way more powerful than phaselocking, but phaselocking is so much more fun. I pretty sure all the characters cooldowns are start out much lower in Borderlands 2.

You can't say that. There's a point at which too much repeating of the word "badass" and making silly jokes drags the game down instead of up. I don't know what it was that made BL1 so much more addictive than the sequel, but there was something.

That's because the game has an accuracy stat and guns will never be pinpoint accurate, not even sniper rifles. At a long enough range you'll still miss even while scoped.
Yup. All those random guns actually come with a set of stats, and their impact on the game is like anything obviously more complicated like an AD&D role-playing session with a hundred dice all rolled at once.

The randomness of the guns also spouts out total crap guns with high damage output, which one can still use and enjoy until something better comes along. It was my switch-to finishing move weapon, for a couple of levels. Eventually, it stopped making damage and sense and we had to part ways.

For a while, my best shotgun did absolutely utter mad lethal damage, but I only got three shots out of it and reloading took four days.

As for RE: OP - I loved the first one with all its raw edges and that indie quirkiness. Borderlands 2 still has at the least the heart and spirit of that going. It's a major budget title now, I actually paid some attention to the story this time around (starting about halfway through, that is) and they love to mess with the system. If you're a headshot-loving person like myself, you'll be in for a treat... and then some.

Based on the input data you've provided, my prediction is that there is a 87% probability of you loving your Borderlands 2 ride. On average, there will be 2.5 things you'll dislike and 1.5 things you'll hate.

1st of all, sorry. Borderlands isn't something I'd suggest to anyone. It's just another shooter on the unreal engine with pretty useless attempt to add 2 rpg elements that fails completely.

BUT, that being said (and that is my honest opinion of the game and it's sequel) I play a lot of Borderlands and 2, because it's the only shooter with local multiplayer anymore, and when adding friends and booze... it's better than nothing.

It's one of those "rpg elements" that's causing your hitbox problem. Get a more accurate gun or increase your skill (not your gaming skill, your character's accuracy) and that will stop happening.

edit- ninja'd. Oh well. I'll add you will shortly find the game very.... VERY easy. All challenge is easily lost by finding the right exploit weapon/skill combo. And since the enemy "level" scales with the player "level" they might as well not even have them.

I was afraid of that. While I don't hate rpg elements in a game like this, I find it patently ridiculous that I can be aiming RIGHT AT an enemy and STILL miss them. I suppose to a certain degree I understand why it's that way, I just find it terribly silly.

I didn't get far playing Borderlands 1. The story was next to non-existent, the missions got repetitive pretty quickly and the gameplay was alright. The only good thing were the characters but there was hardly any interaction with them, at least not enough for me to keep playing the game.
BUT, and that's a big BUT, a friend of mine got it a few months after I bought it and I started playing it again, with him this time. It was a lot of fun. Much much more than when I played it on my own. The things that bothered about the game when I first played, simply didn't matter. We didn't care about the story at all nor about the repetitive missions. We just traveled through the world, doing missions, killing psychos and aliens, getting better and better weapons and laughing at the great characters.
Usually I don't like it when they add unnecessary multiplayer to games which would be great games without it but if there is one game where the multiplayer makes the game better, it's this one.
Also, you should get the DLCs for Borderlands 1. I really enjoyed them. Even more crazy fun characters and the story actually gets good.

As for Borderlands 2, I enjoyed it just as much, maybe even a bit more than the first game. I played it with my friend right away this time, haven't played it alone and I don't think I will. It's basically the same game, just improved. If you like BL1, you'll also like the sequel.

Funny, I completely misssed out on the first Borderlands and ended up buying Borderlands 2 on a hunch... SO MUCH FUN!!! I really like it because it's so easy to play and enjoy. The story, narrative and writing is good. Handsome Jack the main villian of BL2 is really funny yet you wanna punch him in the face by the time you meet him. Once you get more friends playing with you it just gets better.

Borderlands 2 certainly does not have the most beautiful graphics, nor the most imperssive story or even the most engaging gameplay however, it is very, VERY FUN!!!

Actually, I did buy them, just yesterday. I'll play them soon but I'd like to get through the main game's missions first, make sure my character's not underleveled and all that.

Don't worry, you're not missing much. The story is bland as hell. Fortunately the gameplay makes up for it.

I haven't gotten around to playing Borderlands 2 yet, but I had fun with the first one. Like you, I played Mordecai with an emphasis on sniping capabilities and crit hits (and I made my Bloodwing deal poison), and like you I had a tricky time soloing with him. Thing is, sniper characters aren't heavy damage dealers and you've got to be spot on to land the critical shots. Mordecai is more of a support character, but it's not impossible to beat the game solo with him. Just be prepared to die over and over again.

When I did my solo run with Mordy, I had an easy time with it. Mainly because I focused on pistols and actually finding/buying good pistols and revolvers. It can be done, with any setup as far as gear and skill trees go, but I found pistols to be the easiest for me when going with Mordecai.

I'll have to try that sometime. I used sniping rifles as my primary weapon and revolvers secondary.

Ugh...the only way I can imagine anyone genuinely enjoying these games is if you're drunk and you're playing it with drunk friend/s,because my god does this game have NOTHING to offer,at least in my eyes.At one point me and my friend compared it to WoW,which is exactly what it is.

Pardon me for being so skeptical, but this franchise just feels hallow, soulless to me.
