...Okami.
Yes, yes, I know its a ridiculously good game, and I know that I should have played it years ago, especially considering that I am a massive Nintendo fanboy. After playing it for a couple hours, I told myself that I am a complete idiot for not having played this earlier, and that learning about Okami because I bought and played Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is a horrible horrible insult to Okami. Trust me, I've slapped my own wrist plenty of times :p

But this thread isn't entirely about me really, I want to know what games you have recently (or not so recently) played, that you should have played a LONG time ago.
Please also include your reasoning for not having played the game earlier (time/other games/money/didn't know about the game/etc.) and what finally got you playing it (bored/friend/money/found out about game/etc.)

For me, I saw Okami in the "pre-owned" section of my local EB games, knew about Amaterasu from Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and knew Okami got really good reviews, so I bought it for the low price of 10 beans.

Edit: Feel free to express your incredulity towards others for finally playing their respective games, but please be polite about it.

So I FINALLY made you...
click this spoiler tag because I didn't my sentence there.

Anyway, on topic. I started playing Knights of the Old Republic for the first time couple of days ago. I've known of it's existance and the praise it gets for a long time but the "Star Wars" tag has made me shy away from it, since I don't particularly like any of the movies. And yes, it's a great game, and I should've started playing it a long time ago.

Played Portal 1 just a month ago. Didn't play it before 'cause my shitty computer kept lagging it.

It was basically gathering dust in my Steam library since that time it went free to play for a while and up until i got my new laptop.

Nothing much, I'm afraid. Except that back in 2007, before I really started buying a lot of DS games and liking a lot of Japanese RPGs, I missed out on The World Ends With You, which now has its protagonist as my avatar. Make of that what you will.

Also, Okami is amazing, I agree entirely. I think I'm about halfway through, and everything I've seen of it is absolutely stunning. And you'll never see visual design like that in a game that sold millions of copies before it even came out! Just a tip, for the fourth boss especially, use the brush stroke you got just before. Liberally. I didn't, and I had to use almost all my healing items to survive.

I haven't started recently but I did not play the first Mass Effect game before 2010 and it came out in 2007 I think

Anywho, once I had played it for a while I find out that I fucking loved it

I've only 'died' once, and that was from that douchebag Waka the second time I fought him.
Thankfully, my food bag had been full for about 2 hours before that fight, so I just got up again and took away the last sliver of health he had left.
I'll try to collect more healing items though.
And as a general rule of thumb when playing adventure games, I always whore the fuck out of ~insert item/ability/skill/etc. you got in that dungeon/before boss~ when fighting the final boss of an area.
I guess its a skill I acquired from all the Zelda games I played :p

I did this about a month and a half ago. I really wish I had done so earlier.

Amazing game.

In August, I finally played Half-Life 2. I've owned the Orange Box since shortly after release, but only played TF2 and Portal. I tried Episode 1 for about an hour(I got confused by the order), and thought it was pretty poor. I didn't realize that I really needed to play Half-Life 2 in order to jump into Episode 1, and didn't even notice the original (HL2) was included in the game box after my underwhelming experience had turned me sour on the Half Life section. After finally realizing that the original Half-Life 2 was in(on?) the Orange Box, I gave it a whirl knowing how it's regarded. At first I was a little nervous due to my fore-mentioned experiences and it's release date, but I can honestly say that Half-Life 2 is my favorite game of all time. This game blew me away. I was breathless at parts.

The boss I'm talking about was also the only one who 'killed' me. Other than that, they can't touch dis. And there's actually some really weird stuff in Okami that I've never seen in any other fantasy setting, before or since. (And I don't just mean the monsters; there's plenty of Japanese-mythology-inspired monsters in Touhou as well, although that takes a lot of...artistic liberties.)

lol, well to be fair, you are fighting in the "mystical land of Nippon" which is literally what Japanese people call Japan.
I wish I knew more kanji so I could read what is written on those beautiful scrolls that has the enemy information on it.
All of Okami screams Japan, which is probably one of the reasons I love it so much.
When I revived the first sprout, and the animation changed to literal animation (as the green-ness was spreading) my jaw literally dropped. I have never seen a game as beautiful as Okami, and I cannot berate myself enough for finally getting to it earlier this week.
I'd love to have the animation team of Okami make an anime series, because I would watch the fuck out of it.

Finally started playing Deus Ex (the first one) for the PS2. When it came out I was 10 and I rarely had time for anything that didn't have a cartoon rat as the main character.
After hearing about how it's this awesome example of a game, which allows for a lot of adaption on the part of the play to match gameplay style with personal preferences, it sounded like the type of thing I can really get into.

So when the game store near mine closed down I got it at a slashed price on a whim, and now it's occupying my free time.

Despite some graphical issues I am really getting into it.

I only just started playing Uncharted, and only because I asked my brother if I could play Portal 2 on his computer and he said only if I beat the Uncharted games.

Heh, same. I only played Portal in... February, or something. I saw what I missed...

And I only played CoD:MW in March... after having finished BlOps, and my god, did I wish I never clapped eyes on BlOps (campaign, that is).

Nearly 100% of that game is based on Japanese mythology, name any character, side plot, monster, area, item, etc, 95% of the time there will be an old mythological story behind it

OT: I finally got around to playing Okamiden, and I think they did a really nice job with it, the brushwork with the DS stick works great, I like all the characters, and Chibiterasu is the most adorable main character ever made

It is fair to say the fucking boat outstayed its welcome though. No matter how great you think the game is, you have to agree on that don't you?

Last night I tried CoD4 and it is pretty fun, not stellar, not sophisticated, not particularly challenging, but fun. I prefer the first one though, and I prefer Brothers in Arms and Medal of Honour more than that one.
