My sister and her husband are huge World of Warcraft fans, it's practically all they do in their free time. After bugging me for so long to start playing with them, I finally made a character today and worked on some levels.

It's quite a lot of fun, I can definitely see how people really get into it and get addicted. Especially when you have friends to play with. I tried Champions Online a couple months ago, but just played by myself. Not so great. You really need others to play with for an MMO. Luckily, my sister had a level 1 character she could play on with me. Now we're both level 7 after one session (I'm a troll shaman, she's a hunter). Good times.

So, who else plays WoW? Are you or were you addicted? Do you have friends you play with or do you go solo? And, uh... I guess, Alliance or Horde (no flamewars plz)?

I played Horde on a PVP server (which I recommend normal server). I got to about level 30 before I got board and quit. At the time I guess you could say I was addicted but I never spent more than 2 hours a day in playing usually. I usually played solo because most of my friends who played were already 70 (Pre-Lich) at the time. I liked playing by myself anyways some people took it too seriously.

I played wow for a good 5 years before I ran out of money, and I'd gladly give blizzard more money to play again. Not because I'm an addict, I never have been, I actually find wow, as a game, pretty boring. In 5 years though, you make a lot of good friends, each of them is why i continued to play

I was alliance btw. 80 frost mage (yes I raided with him. Yes I was near the top in DPS. No you can't tell me otherwise.) 80 holy priest (My main, I loved being a priest.), and an 80 prot warrior.

I never cared to dual spec much.

Well 2 things are stopping me from playing it: the huge amounts of grind and the fact that it's notoriously addictive. I've a pretty addictive personality, so I think it'd ruin my social life if I ended up enjoying it. Lose-lose situation.

I play Horde on Moon Guard (RP server except no one I play with RPs and I have only ever seen it like 3 times) and I have to say I like it because it's the only actually good MMO that I can play. I have tried a lot of MMOs before but WoW works for me. My main is a Blood Elf Hunter(Ad my secondary is an Orc hunter) and I am actually playing it right now as I'm typing this. And yes some of my friends do play WoW.
Most of my friends from Thorium Brotherhood went to Moon Guard to RP. Then I head Moon Guard became just like TB. ...Small victories are amazing. (TB is another RP realm. ...I don't know any RP realm with RP.)

I rolled a Warrior for a while, but it's hard to level up as a tanking class - so I switched to DK and ground that to 80. (To take an additional piss on me, I hit 70 a week before WotLK was released.)

Then they nerfed DKs to the point where we were practically armored with paper machet and wielding sockem boppers, and I tried to wait it out until they nerfed pallies. They did, but instead they gave a huge power-up to Shamans. Eventually DKs got their time in the sun again... for like a week. Then they OPed pallies again. This went on for months until I just said "fuck it" and never renewed my account.

Your skill doesn't decide WoW-matches. Whatever-the-hell class Blizzard's crackhead balancing team decided to overpower on a given week is what decided the victor.

Call me power-hungry, but I find that sort of whimsical administration distasteful after so much grinding.

I also made a topic on the typical clientelle at
( http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.230206-Poll-MMORPG-Community-The-Myth#8010387 ) if anyone's not afraid of text-walls.

I play Horde on Shattered Hand, Troll mage and a resto druid. Gotta say, if you can get into some pvp, try it. I've always found it a good bit more enjoyable than pve and the earlier you start learning, the better.

I played wow for 3 years as a night elf hunter mostly on suramar. I most definitely agree with you OP on the fact that playing MMOs with friends is 100 times more fun then by yourself. About 2 years ago one of my friends decided to quit wow and about a month later I quit because I got bored of playing alone mostly.

Played as Horde and it always depended on what I was doing if I wanted to group or not. And after wrestling my soul away from WoW I don't plan on going back.

I like how when people enjoy playing WoW it's immediate addiction. It's just a good, enjoyable game, there doesn't have to be any addiction, it's a load of fucking balls.

OT: I'm currently subscribed, levelling my Priest through dungeons and BG's, although I'm getting bored so I don't think I'll renew, unless of course Cataclysm comes out soon so I can make my damn Goblin Warrior/Shaman. I'm not and have never been addicted, I only play the game for like an hour, I can't play it much longer than that. My friends played it for a while, but I don't think they're renewing until Cataclysm, so it's usually just me playing on my own in PUG's, which I don't mind. E-Drama is always fun to watch and it's only a game, I don't give much of a fuck if I get locked out for a week because of nabs. I mainly play for the PvP anyway. Also, I'm Horde, the majority of my characters are Undead (because badass) except my bank alts (Orcs) and an abandoned lv60 Troll Huntard, and an abandoned lv60 Dorf Death Knoob.

Used to play and plan to renew when Cataclysm comes out. Main was a Night Elf Druid, mostly played Restoration. Alliance obviously.

My favorite aspect of the game was always just questing and exploring, was never big into raiding. Probably why I'm getting rather excited over the Cataclysm expansion pack, the sheer volume of new content being created is mind boggling and the fact they're completely redoing many old areas makes me want to explore them all over again. I even had the 'explorer' and 'loremaster' achievements on my main character, so I'm curious to see how much has changed. Not to mention the new zones look extremely good.

Hell, I just recently watched a 'preview' movie made by someone in the Beta and it just blew my mind.

Damn impressive.

That said no, I've never been addicted. Don't really understand it either, since I've always had the habit of playing till I'd seen everything I wanted to see, then quitting till the next expansion rolled around. Probably the only time I played regularly was when some friends of mine as well as myself got into a good guild around when Burning Crusade was released. Fun guild, always joking and playing around, wasn't serious, and yet it was also one of the best raiding guilds on the server. When it eventually fell apart I never bothered to get into another more 'serious' guild. I'd had my fun, I don't intend to let a game become a second job.

Was good while it lasted though.

I played Horde on Lightninghoof. 80 orc warrior, and I never really considered myself addicted until I quit (which was like 2 months ago), and now I'm hacing serious withdrawal symptoms. I can highly sympathize with heroin addicts, now.

I started when I caught two of my friends talking about WoW and I decided to try it out. Our whole group (of about five guys from school) are all closet WoW players, so it's a good dynamic we have playing with each other. I feel like you can't enjoy an MMORPG unless you somehow connect with the people in some way.

Trying to get started up again, haha.

Yer using the free trial that came with SC2 I gave it a go too. I decided to play on my own mainly because I wanted to see if would stand up as a one player game and I quickly realised, as you have, that it would be better with someone else. The grinding and the lack of a real direction of the quest, (which if id played in the actual story server may have been different), really stopped me playing. I didnt have any motivation to continue playing what could have been a fairly decent game.

When I started playing WoW I was addicted, then I quit for about 2 years and started a paladin on Outland, got it to 77 before I got bored of it and started a Death Knight. I got that DK to 80 and quit for a year.
I renewed my account nearly 2 months ago, got a heirloom and leveled a druid to 73 and I'm once again bored of the game, probably not coming back since I'm bored with leveling and I heard that levels 81-85 are very difficult to reach.

I still play. Name is Yureina on Earthen Ring-US. I log in to play with my guild in raids and mess around with some low level alternate characters. That's about it. My days of being a psychotic about rare titles, achievements, and in-game gold are a thing of the past.
