Due to differences in travel plans I celebrated Christmas with my boyfriend early, and he fulfilled my dream for the last like 7 years or so and got me a PS3! Yes, you read that right. I never got a modern "console" after the PS2. The most modern thing I have is a new PC and a 3DS. And now that the PS4 has been out for a year, it seemed a good time to catch up on the last console generation at a fraction of the price.

So, what should I get? At this point, the things on my list are:

Journey
Little Big Planet
Valkyria Chronicles
Soul Calibur IV/V
Kingdom Hearts HD Remix 2.5
Dragon's Crown

I'm not really big on CoD or Metal Gear or sports games, but anything else I'm open to. I've already played through the Bioshock and Mass Effect games on PC, but if there is a noteworthy difference in gameplay experience I'm willing to take that into consideration as well.

I first became interested in a PS3 when I heard about the Resistance games. The first one is a sort of WWII shooter with monsters, the second felt more like a body snatcher horror movie with an abnormal amount of firepower, and the third was a post apocalypse done rather well. I was also pleasantly surprised by the Saints Row games. If you can detach and enjoy the chaos they're a lot of fun. There is also the Sonic collection of 50 old Sega games on one disk, if you want to start your journey into the future by taking a step into the past...

Well console exclusive-wise there's also:

The Last of Us
The Uncharted Series
Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction, and A Crack in Time are pretty light-hearted fun.
Demon's Souls
God of War series
Ni no Kuni
inFamous series
Heavy Rain

You may have played them on PS2 but there's also The ICO collection and the HD version of Okami.

General console games

Red Dead Redemption
Dark Souls 1 & 2
Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen version
Rayman Legends
Batman: Arkham Asylum (is on PC but Game for Windows Live)

That's just off the top of my head. I haven't enjoyed or played all of these but they're all generally very well-regarded.

Going by your taste in games I'd also recommend Rayman Legends and Puppeteer. Espescially Puppeteer is a game I think you'd like(and its exclusive). Also 3D Dot Game Heroes is really cool if you like a unique take on oldschool Zelda games(minus the frustration).

Anyways have fun with your PS3! :p It has a huge catalogue of really good games.

my personal favorites on MY PS3 would have to be..in no specific order.

Last of Us
Disgaea (D2 is in my opinion the whackiest)
God of War

Then one thats not that well known or wasnt that well 'recieved' but I still had an amazingly fun time with it..

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

The Raw Shark

The Lego games have been pretty good so far.
I'd heavily recommend the inFAMOUS series.
Also, though I think the story is rather uninteresting for the most part, the Uncharted series is pretty fun.
While I see a distaste for Metal Gear, does that include Metal Gear Rising? Because that's full force hack and slashgame play with minuscule cut-scenes.
The KillZone collection is a nice little bundle of three games worth a FPS for a low price.
I heard Mass Effect so Dragon Age should be a given to try out as well.

Instead if hitting you over the head with a list, I'm going to keep it simple:

One of my favorite games of all time, Vib Ribbon, just came out on PSN. It's a PS1-era game, and was never released in the US. It's one of the earliest rhythm games I can think of, and there's only six levels to the game (at just $6 I think it's worth it). The levels are determined by the music being played, so there's an option in the game where you can insert a music CD and screw with the game. Different music will do weird things, like inverting both the vertical and horizontal axes, as well as determining the obstacles [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9_7eHPg2do] you encounter as well as the frequency in which they appear (because of the beat).

It's a VERY short game, but super cute [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFXz_xKQa40] and pretty fun. The biggest drawback is the only way to use your own music is via CD, there's no MP3 option. It's like it's 1999 all over again!

Heavenly Blade (A lot of people didn't like this game, but I enjoyed it, and it's going to be dirt cheap at this point.)

Most of the God of War games were fun to play.

Heavy Rain is crap; the entire game is essentially one huge quick time event.

The Bioshock series. All of them. If possible, play 2 first. :)

Haze - surprisingly intelligent comment on FPSs (and possibly players)

Spec Ops: The Line

Condemned 2

All of the Borderlands games.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (on PSN, but definitely worth it)

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is amazing.
Anything with Ratchet and Clank.
MLB: The Show is far and away the best console baseball game.

Dishonored is pretty good; it's like a first-person steampunk version of Assassin's Creed.

I'm may repeat what others have said, so just count those as seconds.

-Uncharted series. One of the best series on PS3. Amazing voice acting with really fun gameplay.
-Infamous series. My personal favorite Sony exclusive. I love superpowers, so this is just awesome for me.
-God of War. You can get the entire series on PS3. If you like button-mashers you'd enjoy this.
-Heavy Rain. I enjoyed it, but it is an "Interactive Experience".

I'm not sure how you feel about the Warriors games, but you can get a whole bunch of them for PS3. The Pirate Warriors games are great, Dynasty Warriors is always fun, and Warriors Orochi 3 is fun as well.

inFamous 1 and 2
Sly Cooper series- the remaster and the new one
The Uncharted series
The God of War series
Demon's Souls
Heavenly Sword

I would suggest Final Fantasy XIV, but you can get that for PC.

I'm sure there are a few downloadable games that I'm blanking on at the moment, but I'm not near my PS3. I've gotten a few good downloadable games that are pretty good, and Journey was one of them.

Tales of Xillia (do not get the sequel)
God of War (there's a pack of all of them)
Uncharted 1-3
The Last of Us
Heavenly Sword

Best I got off the top of my head.

I'd say Tales of Symphonia, the HD re-release (note: not a remake) is one you shouldn't miss, if you like JRPGs. It's a one-of-a-kind tales-game with the option to have japanese voices instead of the english dub, if you're into that sorta thing, I'm not certain about it. It comes packed with Symphonia 2 as well, but you can ignore it if you want. They're bundled together, so you can't buy just one.

Other than that, Journey is something I believe everyone should play, it's a remarkable game, and its online multiplayer "thing" is creative and simplistic at the same time. Flower is a fun little game from the same developers, very relaxing, although very short, but so is Journey. Beyond that I haven't played that many games available on PS3. (Unless you count Spyro, the PS1-game available from PSN, but if you're not nostalgic about it, or into old games, don't buy it).

Demon's Souls if you can get a copy. IMHO, still the best of the Souls series. Would really love a PC port of it one day, but due to being owned by Sony it is unlikely to happen.

The Ratchet and Clank games are simple pure fun to play, both the HD Trilogy and the newer Future Trilogy.

Another beautiful game if you like RPG's is Eternal Sonata

Bayonetta because its great cheesy fun

A few more that I would second from earlier posts:
Uncharted (wasn't a fan of the first, but the sequels were much better)
Heavy Rain, Its a Marmite game, but I'm one of those that loved it.
I don't really care for JRPGs but I did really like Eternal Sonata, the battle system was just barely good enough as elements are added as you progress.

Bayonetta is my favorite last gen game by a mile, loved everything about it. And Vanquish is almost as awesome. Last gen's best hack and slash and TPS both came out in the same year by the same developer, 2010 was epic.

Uncharted 2 is the only good one IMO. The first one just blows, I got it on release and it blew then, the shooting mechanics were done so poorly, horrible level design, and those fucking jet ski sequences. The 3rd one just has a horrible story, nonsensical set-pieces (and reused set-pieces from UC2), and characters that aren't even consistent with UC2.

I loved Heavy Rain as well. It is more than just quick-time events like another poster said. However, you are planning the game for story, not for gameplay, which I think everyone already knows.

Heavenly Sword was so much better than GOW3. The game has a better battle system, the ending felt epic, and the game has heart.

As far as exclusives go you have God of War (if you can get the God of War Saga, which bundles every game - minus Ascension - that's a hell of a purchase), the Uncharted series and inFAMOUS series (the first couple of games in each franchise are bundled in Dual Packs), the Ratchet & Clank HD Collection (an HD remake of the first three games in the series) and ICO & Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection, The Last of Us and a bunch of very attractive JRPGs: Disgaea, Tales, Demon's Souls, Ni no Kuni, Dragon's Crown and the Kingdom Hearts mixes.
