So I just saw the Conan trailer....

Crom, what a clusterfuck.

Let's put aside the fact the the actor playing Conan looks nothing like Conan... Conan is supposed to be a mountain of a man and a good actor fitting that description isn't exactly easy to find, I guess.

But the movie looks so bland and generic. The action sequences seem to be the usual CG over the top stuff out of Star Wars while they should be more brutal and "heavy-handed", so to speak.

Plus, the 3D effects just pop out a lot in 2D thus making the damned thing annoying even for the people that manage to find somewhere that actually shows it in 3D.

It's on the same level as Resident Evil:Afterlife. All the appeal is so you can walk away going "Dude you remember that part when...".

My money will be going towards 'The Rise of the Planet of the Apes', although half the budget went to fitting the title on the screen.

I'm going to give it a fare chance purely because I like Jason Momoa. Sure I don't expect it to be anything new and ground breaking, but I'd be willing to bet it will be halfway decent. Also I've heard that they didn't just make up an entirely new story for this one like they did with the original Conan movie (and subsequent squeals), but are instead basing it off of some of Robert Howard's original stories.

Seriously... its Conan. Its big budget popcorn movie, based on pulp comics. What were you expecting? The corpse of Shakespeare to crawl up citizen kanes ass and projected on screen?

The film will fit the niche it is designed for. Its not going to win oscars, Its not going to make you think.. its going to kill 2 hours of your time so you can do something slightly more entertaining than basically doing nothing.

Any movie that plans to get ratings based on the assumption that their viewers are bored, easily entertained slobbering children shouldn't exist at all. If it has a decent script, good characterization and nice acting, AND happens to be a silly gore fest, that's fine. If it forgoes all of that because it's a silly gore fest, then it will be shit.

Really? Not only is Jason Momoa taller than Arnold, he's pretty jacked himself at this point. Momoa even has the sort of build that a "barbarian" might have managed to achieve, as opposed to the hulking, non-functional 'roid-aided build that Arnold carried back in the day.

Also, Momoa has already proven that he's a much better actor than Arnold, so I fail to see the issue here.

I'm not saying the movie won't be terrible (it could go either way), but I wouldn't call Momoa a "pretty boy model" to his face.

Why do people always try to make up excuses for supposed popcorn movies? Being a popcorn movie doesn't mean it has to be bad or dumbed down.

That's why Michael Bay will never stop making Transformers movies. Because of people saying "Hey, it's a popcorn movie. How much better can it get?"

Inception was a popcorn movie. It's theme was adjusted so that it could be a "cool action movie". But it was done right, it works.

Same here. I like Conan, I like Jason Momoa, and I like gory, entertaining action movies. Momoa isn't the giant hulking fellow I imagine Conan to be, but I'm sure he'll get the job done.

Yeah, I think the question is less "is it going to be dumb?" (hint: yes) and more "is it going to be fun?" and "is it going to be Conan?" I'm honestly not anywhere near convinced on the last two points by the trailers. It kinda looks like Prince of Persia knocked up Eragon, to be honest.

Honestly, I consider it a popcorn movie. I'm not saying it's a bad movie.

It's simply a fun movie to watch that doesn't force you to think a lot. It's pretty much a straight forward heist movie wrapped in an interesting concept. It doesn't even explore said concept a lot, it just uses it to set up the action.

Hey, I liked it a lot but while watching it (just like yourself) I kept thinking how much more interesting it could be if they delved in a bit deeper.

It can be compared to the Matrix, for example. That's another movie some people tend to tout as being philosophical, etc, but it just isn't.
