So, I was considering an iMac.

I'm in the market for a new computer (blast this two year old laptop technology), and I was pretty impressed when I saw an iMac in Best Buy the other day.

Do any users of the Escapist have thoughts on the new 27 inch iMac? Do any of you own one? Are you satisfied with your purchase? How does it hold up in gaming?

If I decided to buy, I would most likely get the $1999 Intel Core i5 one.

I've never owned a Mac before, so I don't really know what to expect.

erm...

Well, I have a MacBook... it isn't exactly similar hardware wise, but I have all the newest software, like Snow Leopard and whatnot.

Its definitely a lot more simple to use than PC's, I've found. However, its not really worth getting an uber-expensive high-powered one, since you won't be using most of it due to the lack of games.

Overall though, Macs are good computers - simple, easy to use, reliable (mostly), and whatnot.

I've got a mac book and I have to say that I love it, but I have to admit that they don't hold up in the games department well at all, but if you have a copy of windows you can use bootcamp to run both softwares and do whatever you want on both.

I have a 17" MacBook Pro, and I love it.

If you aren't planning on gaming with it, Macs are solid computers. Completely virus-proof on my side.

As for iMacs, my mother's friend has one, and it looks nice and all, but I really can't say from personal experience on it.

As for Macs overall however, I can say they rule.

Do you like playing games on your computer? Do you like being able to fix problems with your computer without being hampered by a simplistic user interface that actually overcomplicates anything more difficult than changing your desktop? Do you dislike spending a lot of money on a mac when you could get a significantly better PC for the same price?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you shouldn't get a mac.

If I did get one, it's likely that I would dual-boot Windows(contradictory, I know) so I could force it to play games.

If that would even work correctly. I'm not entirely sure. My lack of Apple knowledge sort of destroys any effort of pre-planning I could have. Hell, I'm not even sure the chassis would allow for hardware upgrading...

DON'T DO IT.

If you desperately, and i mean desperately like you'd stab a hobo for it, need Mac OSX, buy an equivalent PC for half the dough and an EFI-x chip.

Yeah, new Macs come with the capabilities of Bootcamp, so you can use Windows on Mac.

Unfortunately you have to buy Windows Vista/XP/whatever separately, but they definitely can run it.

I bought one of the 21" iMacs a couple weeks ago. It's a little lacking in the gaming department but I'm loving everything else about it.

Have you owned a Mac before?

And have you had any problems with the iMac?

Sorry for the drilling of questions, I just wouldn't want to purchase a $2000 paperweight.

No love for Gentoo?

but seriously, I have a macbook which I use for general web browsing, Its fast and easy and I don't have to do a lot of customization to get it the way I want it. Firefox + xmarks.

The questions are understandable, $2000 is a lot of money to blow away in one place.
This is the first Mac I have personally owned, but I have been using them my whole life. I used them all throughout high school and all my friends seemed to have them. I just really like the OS, it just seems so much more natural than Windows to me. I haven't had any trouble with it yet.

I had to use Macs Briefly in school, I really did like them. They were slow (Slower than the schools PC's) and operating them was just that little bit more awkward.

I prefer PC's. But you like like them.

Persoanlly I recommend Windows more, its easier to use and has a larger range of uses.

Macs do have there uses though.

If it's your first Mac, you might have a few troubles adapting to it. However, get an Intel chip so you can fire bootcamp. If you're a gamer, you'll need it.

It's really easy for work and presentations though.

if you want to play games, take the money you'd spend on the imac and go to your local computer shop and piece together a computer for the same amount of money. you'll have a much better computer for the same price

mac's in general are REALLY over priced

I gotta agree with a few of these people. Macs simply rock. They are awesome. I have a MacBook Pro and I've had it for 2 years without a single problem. In fact as long as you take care of them, they will last a long time. My cousin has 4 Macs and each one is over 2 years old and he's about to get a brand new one.

If you're just going to use the Mac though for gaming, and web browsing and things like that, then PC is the way to go. I say that just simply because they're cheaper than Macs are.

I have a PC and I use it for different things than I use my Mac for. Macs are definitely worth it, and in my opinion the only way to go if you are into Video Editing, Video Production, and Photography.
