So I watched the (not so new) Game Overthinker on screw attack...

I am sorry, I haven't watched game overthinker/movie bob/the big picture guy since he migrated over to screw attack. Being a fan of his previous work, I decided to give him a try this week (even though I do not find screw attack to be my cup of tea at all) I was struck with how... BAD it was.

1) the first and most obvious problem: I am sorry but the new story segments have no place within the context of the show, instead of the show being concise and informative, it sort of contradicts its own purpose by having bob acting out his own badly acted fantasies, which, if anything make it seem immature. Its hard for to take him seriously when he is suggesting how to improve or industry one minute and then zapping ninjas with a nes gun the next.
2) He is ranting: the reason that Game Overthinker was so instantly accessible was that it was 5-7 minute chunks. now it feels like a genuine chore, maybe it was the story sequences that made it feel longer but for the first time, I was bored during a Bob Chipman episode. I don't always agree with his points but I do often find him to be a interesting speaker.

honestly, It feels a bit like the work that he is doing with screw attack has rubbed off on him a bit. If anything it reminded me of the old screw attack series "life in a game" which was also rather badly acted and written as well.

anyway: rant over... I was wondering what you guys think of the new G.O?
do you still watch G.O?
do you like the new story segments?
am I a troll?

stay chill bbs

finally:
THIS IS ALL OPINION.
I PERSONALLY ENJOY ALL OF MOVIE BOBS OTHER WORK
I AM NOT A HATER
I WILL NOT HOLD IT AGAINST YOU IF YOU LIKE THE "NEW GAME OVERTHINKER"

I got really into The Gameoverthinker, but then he started the whole Quest of the Overthinker/Antithinker thing and yeah. It's been downhill from there. I stuck out the whole Quest just to see if at any point it came together. But it just didn't.

Once he finished that I was hoping for a return to the good stuff, but again, no. Some rubbish about burning down gamestops came on and I just stopped watching.

Still enjoy The Big Picture (sometimes) and Escape to the Movies though.

I only watch the Big Picture and on occasion Escape to the Movies of his. Game Overthinker is rubbish IMO. His best show is The Big Picture and even then it is about 1 out of 4 episodes I actually find he makes a decent point. Like this week's junk drawer is pretty lame and "scapegoaty". Bob's biggest problem I think is that he doesn't overthink stuff like he likes to think he does, he makes shit up that isn't there. Every once in a while he does a show about what I thought was common knowledge and gets praised for it for enlightening his audience. (Like the "Collar" Hannah-Barbera episode.)

Then on rare occasions he does something cool. Like the Green Lantern continuity rundown. Although even in the cool shows he throws stuff in there I completely disagree with or see a different way.

I watch and take interest in Big Picture and Escape to the Movies.

Game Overthinker... not so much. It's mostly just Bob fawning over Nintendo.

I promptly jumped ship once that anti-thinker business started up.

I jumped ship after that ridiculous FPS episode. I don't mind the Big Picture, and I usually agree with him on movies, but I think his Nintendo fanboyism really detracts from the whole thing. I like Nintendo too, but he is incredibly biased towards them.

Game Overthinker was the first of his work that I saw, and I was a big fan until the antithinker stuff started. Eventually it became so meh that I forgot about the show entirely until this thread came up, as did everything else on ScrewAttack that I used to watch.

Still enjoy Escape to the Movies and the Big Picture though, and hope that he gets to do bigger and better things as time goes on.

I don't like first person shooters, but he takes it to a new level. And his Nintendo infatuation is annoying.

Here's how Bob explains the change:

This is just speculation, but I sense an insecure and bitter vibe coming off of this.

I can sometimes agree with his taste in movies and the like, but when it comes to video-games I tend to disagree with almost everything he says to the point where I'm just left shaking my head and turning the video off mid-way through because I have no interest in hearing any more.

But then it's apparent hes had an entirely different gaming experience than I have. While I played Age of Empires and Mechwarrior 2 he was playing Mario and Metroid. While I was enjoying Civilization and SimCity he was playing Metal Gear and Smash Bros.

And that would be fine if only he didn't often come across as thinking only HIS experience is the valid one. Oh I'm sure he doesn't genuinely think that way, he seems a smart guy, but my god can it be grating sometimes.

Like most others have said, don't like the skits, and his Nintendo fanboyism really throws me off.

Well. I really enjoy the game overthinker...

Enough to skip through those awful story bits. I really hate those... >>. However, when he EVENTUALLY gets to the meat of the episode, that's what I enjoy. ^^'

Also, I'd have to say that I am a Nintendo fan boy to a certain extent. So that doesn't bother me too much.. :p. He can sometimes bother me with his apparent one sidedness goes too far.

I've mixed feelings about the new GO. Sometimes it's stupidly funny and sometimes it's just stupid. I certainly don't think it makes him hard to take seriously though; the quality of his arguments hasn't changed. I can look past the silliness to see that. To give the storylines some credit, the twist and the end of the Supreme Court episode was very successfully stupidly funny and Ivan the Intern is a good character. Right now I?m content to let the man have his fun.

The story arc thing bugged me at first but I've come to like it actually. I recently re-watched the whole thing and liked it quite a bit. It certainly improved over time, with some of the early episodes being lackluster and some of the recent ones being much more entertaining. Since he's been doing this his cinematography and acting has improved, along with his editing, and he's also done a far better job of having the story convey his thesis, which is supposedly that "fun is enough".

It surprises me that people think it's weird that he likes Nintendo games. Pretty much everyone I know who has been a lifelong gamer and is around my age grew up with the SNES and the Game Boy and still likes to play Mario or Zelda or Pokemon or whatever. Even my significantly younger brother likes Super Mario World and Mega Man 2 because of emulation. Liking Nintendo games doesn't mean you can't like new games too or even that those old games are a person's favorites.

And I don't get why people feel so strongly about the FPS genre that they would rush to defend it. There aren't that many FPS games that have made me feel that strongly, but even the ones that did would probably have worked just as well, if not better, with a different gameplay mechanic.
