Let's just get right down to what I need all y'all's help for.

All of my old WoW friends are gone, either moved on from the game or we've grown apart. I need a new server and I need your suggestions. I don't care if it's pvp, normal, rp what have you. Based on your experience, what is a good realm and why? Helpful people? Good battlegroup?

I feel like I've lost a battle against Blizzard, now that I'm going back to the game. Despite its flaws, I still do enjoy the game. It's well designed for the most part. Anyways... that's besides the point. From what I've seen on these forums, most people are sensible and level-headed which is hard to find on these here interwebz. So please. Suggestions or anything helpful to contribute?

You're going to get more people warning you to avoid certain servers rather then suggest ones. And lets start with me, avoid The Forgotten Coast. As much as I'd love to see new players repopulating on my home server I have never strayed away from as I hold too many max level characters to afford it; it's incredibly quiet and lacks any sort of motivation to do anything, despite the fact it's considered a medium pop server.

All I'm getting is a bunch of 'monkey on your back' jokes and a warning about addictive substances. Beyond that, I don't have a goddamn clue.

Well you could come to Azuremyst and join my guild if you're interested in finding new friends or people to play it with.

I've been in this situation 3 or 4 times over 6 years, and I've learned that it doesn't matter which realm you pick. Half of depends on the players you meet and associate, and half depends on you. Almost like real life. Best I can say is a high populated server would give you more options in terms of the diversity of guilds and groups.

Well if you don't care about the kind of server, then i'd suggest just going with something highly populated.

I would suggest an RP or RP-PvP server, even better if you can consider getting into RP. Why though? Well, People on RP servers tend to be far more comprehensible with their English for one. That's a thing I can't live without in Wow anymore, for some reason. I find people more approachable too. As for realms, I would recommend Argent Dawn if you'd go for a plain RP realm and Defias Brotherhood if you want an RP-PvP one.

I started my Wow experience on a Pvp Realm, then moved to PvE, before finally going to RP, RP-Pvp only to go back to RP, and I'm happy there. This goes back as far as vanilla. But realms have downsides. Let's start with Argent Dawn. It's a big realm, with the biggest RP community. That also means it has the most retards. However, personally, I feel it's an lesser evil compared to Defias Brotherhood, which has a very Elitist, heavily Roleplay-PvP oriented RP. I never enjoyed that much, and thus abandoned the realm quite quickly. But hell, I know others might enjoy it.

Not an RPer? While, I'm personally a little vexed about people who go on RP realms to not actually RP, I do anknowledge the people who go there to be with a more... comprehensible community, as long as they respect the rules and don't go out of their way to insult actual roleplayers.

I suppose that's what I can add to this.

Personal recontamination: Defias Brotherhood (assuming it's the same as the EU server). RP servers have much friendlier people with better communication skills in general, and WoW without ganking just feels WRONG to me. I mean, we're at war, Why can I not attack the scum on sight?

"Sir, when are we going to launch an attack on that big fuckoff dragon who's breaking everything?"
"Shut up and help me take down these potential temporary allies!"

Think the official reason is they have bigger problems at the moment.

Woop. I forgot everyone arn't European here. Sorry. I have no clue about US servers. But I'm guessing the same approach applies. RP or RP-PvP servers.

Can't say I'd really recommend WoW at this juncture, unless you're hard set on plumbing the depths of Mists of Pandaria. The game is 8 years old and has been bleeding subscribers for a few years now. It's still massive, obviously, but it doesn't have that sense of critical momentum and vitality that kept it feeling so essential for so long. I agree with you that it's a well designed game...I'm no WoW hater. But good design can only hold off entropy for so long.

If you're hot for an MMO, GW2 is launching in just over a week, which would give you an opportunity to start on something new and enjoy that pioneer feeling that a new MMO always carries with it. TOR is going FTP in fairly short order, and Rift has a very low price point now and much to recommend it. TSW has some issues, but I expect its price point will come down dramatically now that it has stumbled out of the gate. Planetside 2 is going into beta. And of course, if you just want another Blizzard fix, we're getting closer to Titan's unveiling.

I've played GW2, TOR and Rift and dabbled briefly in TSW, and I played WoW for many years, so if you can let me know what it is you're looking for in an MMO I can help ya find it, or at least let you know which if any of these games is a best fit for you. If you're dead set on WoW, then...uh...how about Moon Guard? Moon Guard was a good server.

I try to ignore peoples opinions of WoW and form my own. I agree it's not a perfect game, but it still amuses me. And Mists of Panderz looks fun.

...So feeling like you've lost a battle is alien for me, I don't have an addictive personality, when I grow bored of something (and I do) I just move on. Making a fuss over it makes it a bigger part of your life and makes it evolve into a problem.

WoW takes up a very small part of my day and I'm STILL sitting on the end of the game with all content cleared. It's a hobby. It's fun, it hasn't ceased being fun for me, I don't rely on others to make it fun for me, and if all my friends move on, I go about chatting to random people on my server. You'd be surprised the people you meet.

Sadly I'm on the EU realms or I'd throw you a scroll of resurrection.

My american friends play on the Deathwing Server, Horde side. Not much help I know but pick a server with a Mid to High population and then go about chatting to people! That's what I like about WoW, it's very easy to get to know people.

Larger communities/servers are a breeding ground for douchebags, but sadly you also find the NICEST people buried in them as well.

Yeah, don't forget the scrolls of resurrection, not sure what's in it for you, but I'm sure you'll please someone if you bother to sort that out before restarting :D In fact I think you get an alt boosted to 80 and free expansions up to Cataclysm.

I'd have offered, but again, I'm on Aggramar EU, a bit distant from you and we'd raid midday to afternoon for US types :)

Well, all I can offer is to read this:

and pick which one appeals to you the most. And when you pick your server, read the following travelogue to learn about the races and classes:

I admit the comics are rather old so their relevance might be in question, but screw you they're funny.

Also, further reading [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/shamusplays/8251-Shamus-Plays-WoW-1-Its-An-Imps-Life].

Any high pop server. Join a non-hardcore raid (or PVP if that's your thing) guild and you'll soon make friends. I decided to pop back in using the scroll of resurrection thing on a boring weekend not long ago, jumped into the biggest guild on the server and had a pretty good time running the new raid. Might buy some gametime to give me something to do until I go off to uni.

Ignore the people who say Cata is awful. It started out brilliantly, but loads of people moaned about it being too difficult so everything got nerfed into the ground. The content is all good; it looks nice, the mechanics are fun - just not challenging enough.
