So yeah, that movie is in the same continuity as the show, or at least the books are to each other.

I guess that works if you think about it given the divide between the two time periods they take place in coupled with how strongly both adhere to physics. I can see one being the logical conclusion to the direction the other was going.

Well I'm pretty sure the author of The Martian has a say in whether they are tied or not. I think it's more just an easter egg/homage to a book that he enjoyed reading.

And, having read all those books, I can say that nothing about the actual events of The Martian play any part in the book series.

I think the books are pretty good as far as your average scifi fair goes.
