Though apparently, not the game people want.

Makes me wonder though, if things go as they are, does that mean DotA will get an MMO or RTS? Because while Half-Life 3 may never come, Warcraft IV's chances aren't that much higher. :(

It's sad when the biggest announcement from Valve these days is a card game that originated from a community mod. My, how they have fallen. Just keep up the Steam sales and maintenance, I guess.

Valve has been addicted to the DOTA drug. It will continue to follow the dragon till the end of its days.

And DOTA is even bigger than League of Legends.

Well, it's not like "Valve doesn't make games anymore" was ever true. They've released a game every year or two for a while. In addition, they've also been working on supporting their existing games, most notably Dota 2 as well as the others.

You mean how they've been operating for well more than a decade? I'm starting to wonder if people who level this kind of criticism know of Valve only through memes about Half-Life 3 and Gabe Newell. Some of the biggest games Valve has produced are Counter-Strike, Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2. None of these originated from Valve but are their biggest releases and have the largest playerbases nonetheless.

Since when? DotA is big, but LoL has always had the larger playerbase.

Honestly, it would be easier to list just the games that originated solely from Valve, which would boil down to just the Half-Life series and maybe The Lab.

They're arguably better at finding diamonds in the rough and polishing those into successful products than they are at creating something from scratch. Sort of, kind of the Steve Jobs of game developers (not entirely analogous, I know).

Mind you, I'm not holding that against them.

As soon as Wizards gets its head out of its own ass and makes a relevant online platform for MTG the only competitor left standing will be Hearthstone. Games like this and TES will be left in the dust.

You are right. I had to make a double check and those games do seem to be the only "independent" ones I guess unless you count Ricochet. Might be worth pointing out that the two expansions for HL - Opposing Force and Blue Shift were a collaboration with Gearbox, so it's not even the entirety of the HL series. I thought Day of Defeat might have been originated by Valve, too, but turns out it was a similar deal as with Counter-Strike - a third party HL mod that they acquired.

And yeah - it's just how they roll. I don't mind - without Valve's involvement we wouldn't have had some of the biggest games out there. Aside from DotA:A, I suppose, the rest wouldn't have been nearly as successful and as long lived. What I'm amazed by is that people are blaming them for this now as if it's some new occurrence.

Considering WotC's general approach to software stuff, which I could describe as "semi-luddite", I don't know how soon that would happen.

Gee, a probably micro-transaction heavy card game based thing, that is designed to appeal to the mobile audience? Well, I'll forget all about Mr Freeman now...

They're making full fledged VR games, what that means remains to be seen though.

Virtual buffet with Gaben. Pretend the food is real which should come easy to Valve fans still waiting for HL3.

I've said this before, but people really need to give up on Half-Life 3. If Valve had any interest in making HL3, they've done it by now. A lot of people are bashing Valve for putting effort into a card game, but don't realize that the development team needed for a card game is FAR smaller than they'd need for a HL3. Hell Hearthstone originally only had like 7 or 8 people working on the game. The team didn't expand until it came out and exploded.

This card game is perfect for Valve's current market. A lot more people watch DOTA than play it (at least in my experience) and being able to play a game using the same characters while watching Twitch streams, seems like the perfect game for them right now.

Valve are free to make whatever they want. They don't owe any particular game to me or anyone else.

Thankfully, I'm free to not give a shit. Which I don't.
