My reaction can pretty much be summed up by this:

Seriously, I'm probably more excited for this than I was for The Force Awakens. For years now I've been wanting Star Wars to take a break from its continual focus on the same handful of planets and Skywalkers, to give average Joes and Janes their time to shine and explore the setting from a different perspective. Looks like I'm (mostly) finally going to get my wish.

Thoughts?

Looks like an entertaining deviation from the main story. I'm more looking forward to this than I was to Force Awakens.

The artistic vision in this trailer alone is immense, probably more impressive than even The Force Awakens.

This is a far cry from the nonsensical audiovisual carnage that was the prequels. Consider me hyped.

I'm worried because just like Suicide Squad, this one was ordered to have reshoots and rewrites because it was too dark. I'm worried they're handing final editorial control over to a trailer making company like Suicide Squad and we'll get a hacked together mess of a movie where scenes are played out backwards to change the tone and plot points.

Looks nice, some of the dialogue sounds a little clunky, gonna be interesting to see how this side story fits into the canon.

Looks good, hopefully the movie will live up to the trailer. Though I admit that I am a sucker for awesome, epic music, and how it will color my feelings about some imagery that accompanies it. Remove John William's score, and I'm not as sure i would be as interested in this trailer. Pretty visuals don't bring me to see your movie, good story and good characters do. This had some indication of that, but it was more of a "flash over filler" in my opinion. Not saying that's bad for a trailer, just that it was banking more on drawing your attention with the look of it, rather than the story of it. Spectacle more than substance for the trailer. So I'm still skeptical, but somewhat optimistic.

Looks terrible. It looks like a fan-made film with a "dark and gritty" approach (which doesn't fit Star Wars IMO), that's bizzarely still within the "humans only club" (I know it's a petty gripe, but where's all the aliens?), and am I supposed to believe that a missile launcher can do damage to an AT-AT while a cannon on Hoth fires rounds that don't make a dent? Also, Felicity Jones just seems...off, somehow, in the way she delivers her lines.

I'm a bit worried too, there are a lot of similarities between the situations of both movies. But Disney generally seems to know what they're doing.

OT: Woop woop! I'm just excited for all the non-lightsaber action we are gonna get. Not that I'm saying I'm not excited for Darth, I think we will be getting the most badass version of the character yet.

At this point, I'm just looking forward to anything that doesn't revolve almost entirely around space wizards. I like my lightsaber fights as much as the next person, but it'd be nice to have a movie where all the important shit gets done by non-force sensitives. Sure, they got some Vader mixed in, since I guess they needed some recognizable mask in there, but I suppose he's an appropriate big bad considering the time period of the movie.

... if Vader end up meeting Felicity Jones' character and tells her the Force is strong in her, I'm seriously gonna throw shit at the screen, up to and including anyone sitting next to me.

Ouch, then you'll be disappointed to know John Williams won't be scoring the movie.

Yeah, alright. That'll do.

I do appreciate a well edited trailer.

I'm not big on them setting new movies in the time period of the original trilogy but I do like the idea of a Star Wars movie with a few less Jedi wankers mumbling about the force.

I think sometimes people think that because they watched the original Star Wars trilogy as kids it must have been super kid friendly. It's not really true.

I think some of the tropes have aged rather badly or become so lodged in the public consciousness that they've lost all the edge they once had, and I think the prequel trilogy seriously damaged people's ability to take Star Wars seriously. But ultimately Star Wars is pretty gritty. It has genuine peril, some moments of moderate (but still barely kid friendly) violence, and while there is whimsy and space magic and cute Ewoks it's set against the background of what is ultimately a pretty dark setting where the bad guys have, at the beginning, already won. Heck, even visually the Star Wars original trilogy basically created the "used future" aesthetic, which is the visual standard for "grittiness" in science fiction.

Sure, the prequels were light as fluffy as candy corn diarrhoea but hey, have we all forgotten that the prequels were shit. They're the thing we've been wanting Star Wars to move away from for years. What does that mean, if not going back to a grittier approach?

I like that Laputa-esque robot. The older Jedi all have a very commanding presence, so much so that they kind of overshadow the two leads a bit. All told, it's a very stylish trailer without much substance so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Nah, I don't mind that. What I mean, is that his music, which is very evocative and emotionally charged, carries a lot of pre-packaged positive feelings for me. And it's possible that this is making me biased to thinking the movie will be good. This isn't exclusive to John Williams, any sufficiently powerful music in a trailer will have a similar reaction with me. I'm just acknowledging that it might not be as good as the trailer is hyping it up to be, and that part of that possible false hype, could be the iconic music.

To give another example that isn't John Williams, this trailer:

Holy shitballs do I love this fucking song, and coupled with these clips, it made the movie look fucking awesomesauce! When i saw it however, I came away with a "eh, it was pretty good. Not great, had some major flaws, but I enjoyed it." By far, the trailer was more epic in comparison to the final product. It's possible that the Rogue One has the same effect going on with the trailer. I don't know. I hope not. I hope it's just as awesome as they are making it to be, but it probably won't be. Of course, that's not the same as it being a bad movie. Just a "Not as awesome as the trailer" kind of movie.

Force Awakens trailer had the same effect for me too. that last one they released, with the remix of Mr. William's score, fuck yes. Movie itself? Good, very fun, not as epic as that trailer for me.

I don't have any hype for the movie, but I do want to see it when it comes out, for pretty much the same reasons as you, OP.

It looks pretty damn solid from what I can see from the trailer, and it's actually a nicely edited trailer.

Sad that I have to praise that, but, whatever.

I know I'm excited and I wanna see how they're gonna do the first in a series of non-main story Star Wars.

Looks good, the storm troopers look menacing for a change. It feels like there's a different tone and atmosphere to The Force Awakens, which is probably a good sign if we're going to get a new Star Wars film every year.

Ooh, commando raid movie.

Not going to be many character walking away from this one, I hope. I can see how it could go "too dark" though. Tough line to straddle.

Okay, it clearly shows I am not a Star Wars nut. I want to like it and get to know it but still felt nothing. Hope the Star Wars fans loved it and meant more to them than a scrub like me.

If some Stargate teaser dropped, I would fan girl the fuck out!!

It was a'ight. I preferred the teaser trailer, honestly. This one felt a bit more...stilted? Less stylized and slick.
