Okay, perhaps that title comes off a little harsh towards Rift. I never actually played the game but my question is, is it worth playing, now that it's free to play? Is there anyone here who played or still plays Rift? What does it do to distinguish itself from other mmos?

Rift was designed to be as generic as possible, imo. It's cliche and tedious and tries to copy WoW in every way (seriously, this is THE WoW copy). I tried the trial and couldn't get past level 6 from boredom. So, no, I don't think that even free it is worth it. This was a long time ago so things may have changed, I don't know.

I do; I think it's pretty sweet.
Still has the best character customization(build and skill-wise) and freedom that I have seen in any mmo.

The only reason I knew of Rift was because of the TF2 promotion. And even then, all it did was add two unused weapons, a hat code that took up inventory space, and a single achievement that was an exact copy of a current Heavy achievement.

I'm not that interested in it anyway. MMOs that look too much like WoW tend to be too much like WoW.

I'm enjoying it, as someone who wanted an MMO like WoW that wasn't WoW to play fairly casually.

It's f2p model is good, all areas, dungeons and raids are free. The shop doesn't sell anything that makes you have better stats, just xp/money boosts and a lot of conveniance items (spawn a mail box or shopkeeper for example). You CAN buy some gear in the shop, but they're not that great and cost way too much, and you can't get all the best stuff with real money. There are also 4 talent trees from the expansion that you need to buy, but the areas of the expansion are free. You can get the real world currency from the auction house, but it's not really a viable option yet as the auction house prices are insanely high, it might die down, might not.
Best f2p model I've ever seen in an MMO, but I haven't played many.

It is the rather old school combat hotbar system, so if you didn't like the combat/gameplay of WoW or older titles this really won't do anything new for you. If you just want WoW that isn't WoW then go for it, but it hasn't got much that's better.

So, good payment model, same old standard MMO gameplay.

At the very least its worth trying out. I mean its free to play so its not like you have anything to loose. Besides some games that have gone free to play and were originally subscription based have become pretty good. I recently got into Star trek online because, hey Romulans were one of my favorite races and its a decent game. I played it for the first couple of months when it had the subscription at launch and while I liked it I didn't feel like I got my money's worth. As a free to play game, its much better.

Other free to play MMOs have turned out to be pretty awesome. Games like Raiderz, Dragon's Prophet, and Tera online have all been worthwhile as free to play games. Maybe rift will be the same

Is Rift that really beautiful looking MMO that seemed to scream

"Come for the boobies, stay for the...we'll figure that out later."

Or am I thinking of a different one?

I've played about an hour before it was free, didn't really draw me in. Though I don't really get into MMOs much anymore.

Either you're thinking of Age of Conan or that really annoying-looking Japanese MMO that is barely disguised hentai.
I think the one I'm thinking of might've been Korean, but it could've been Japanese.

...ugh, now it's just gonna bug me.

No, that's TERA. Rift is far too generic aesthetically. Not that Rift's a bad game, it just doesn't have a particular feel about it.

The class customization is pretty neat, though.

YES! Thank you. I'm pretty sure that was the one I was thinking of.

Thank god, now I don't have to sit at my computer until 3am googling "MMO Boobies." trying to see which game triggers my memory...I can just sit here until 3am googling regular boobies :p

I'll try it. I actually like WoW, not because it is good, but because it is something that provides fairly quick gratification and requires no skill. Only problem is that it is expensive. Gonna try this now.

There is a little drought of games at the moment (in my case) until the end of the month where Deadpool, DARK and other games will come out so I installed it and started to play it.

I'm still playing WoW, but aside from raids during 3 days and dailys I'm not doing much else. I started playing RIFT instead and it really doesn't bother me that it is very similar to WoW, I am actually enjoying it but mostly playing Rift as a time sink.

It's not great but it's not awful either, it's retty much a prettier WoW. That being said it does have a certain charm to it.

I tried Terra and PSO2 and both bored me to hell but were at least visually interesting.

Maybe I'll try Rift.

I have yet to try an MMO that has entertained me. Until then, this is an adequate replacement.

The one thing that Rift has (and WoW doesn't) that keeps me entertained because it triggers my ADD like nobodies business. Walkin through an area and gigantic alerts pop on your screen about impendin invasions. There's Rifts all over the map that you can see from ridiculous distances out. Then there's the adventures which just pop up on the middle of your screen as a default that go "HEY! JOIN THIS AWESOME ADVENTURE!"

As soon as any of those things happen (especially the adventure one, jesus christ I get sidetracked horribly from those) my brain just goes "YAY! THINGS TO DO!" and next thing I know I'm an entire zone away from where I meant to be and have absolutely no idea how to get back.

Outside of that though, definitely horrendously borin. Its really pretty, but its pretty in that painfully generic way.

Also, and this is a really really lame gripe but good god does it annoy me. Every time you select a character on the character select screen they yell really loud. I'm used to clickin between characters when decidin who I want to play and constantly havin to deal with my 2 characters goin "RAWR!" over and over makes me want to punch baby seals.
